Views and Display Overview

The Nota Bene screen provides you with a large area for writing and numerous controls at the top and bottom of the screen. The main window can be changed to display different views of the same document. There are many ways to customize the display to suit your preferences.

Views: Nota Bene allows you to view your document in several different ways. Changing to a different view provides a different on-screen display of your document, but it does not affect the document itself. The different views allow you to see the document as it will appear when printed (Page Layout view), in minimally formatted text (Draft view), with formatting codes revealed (Show Codes view), or as an outline (Outline view). Views can be changed through the View menu, by clicking one of the 4 view buttons at the bottom left of the main Nota Bene screen, or by using keyboard shortcuts. Click the following links for more information.

Page Layout View
Draft View
Show Codes View
Outline View (active only if a framework has been inserted in the document)

Menus: At the top of the screen are the menus (File, Edit, View, etc.). For information on the use of drop-down menus, see Menus.

Workspace Tabs: Just below the menus, is a tab for each of the open files. See Workspace Tabs.

Toolbars and Buttons: Toolbars consisting of buttons and/or other controls are visible on the Nota Bene screen. See Toolbars.

Dialog Bars: Dialog Bars open on the right side of the screen and provide a convenient way of managing functions like Find/Replace, Outline Structures, Cross References and more. See Dialog Bars.

Typeface Controls: Drop-down lists on the Typeface toolbar allow you to select the font or the point size. If styles have been set, the style drop-down list is active and you can use one of the defined styles by selecting it from the drop down list. For more information, see Styles.

Zoom: The zoom slider control allows you to enlarge or reduce your on-screen view of a file. If there is unused gray area on the side of the screen, you can use the zoom control to eliminate it. For more information, see Zoom.

Print Preview (1-Page or 2-Page Zoom): In Page Layout view, you can display a full page or 2 full pages on the screen. For more information, see.Print Preview.

Ruler: The horizontal ruler can be used to set margins, to set the indentation (first line, subsequent lines and right indentation), and to add, remove or change tab settings. The vertical ruler can be used to set the top and bottom margins. For more information, see Ruler.

Action Line: The action line is used for directing the program by using typed commands rather than menus. It is located at the top right of the main Nota Bene screen. For more information, see Action Line.

Status Line: The status line provides you with messages about the status of commands that have been issued. For more information, see Status Line.

Markers: Non-printing markers are available in Page Layout View to alert you to the presence of various commands that affect the appearance of the text. These markers can be hidden or displayed at your option. For more information, see Markers.

Default Settings: You can change the display default settings (the settings that will automatically be active when you open Nota Bene) by clicking Tools, Preferences, and then selecting Screen Display (to change the cursor, status line options or screen color) or Document Views (to change the default view or to select options for page layout or draft view). You can also change the toolbars, buttons or other items that are displayed on the main Nota Bene screen by clicking View, Visual Appearance. For more information, see Interface Options.
