Show Codes View

Show Codes View (also known as expanded view or expanded mode) will display all of the embedded commands in your file. In Page Layout View, the command itself is hidden from view, but in Show Codes View, the command is displayed on a light gray background with green and red double-angled brackets at the beginning and end of the command.

When you issue a formatting command in Nota Bene, the command is inserted in the file, usually at the point of the cursor. For example, the command to add bold to the formatting currently in place is shown as «MD+BO» and the command to end the bold is shown as «MD-BO». The commands to create footnotes and running headers or footers are shown at the point of insertion and include the text of the footnote, header or footer. Documents can be edited in Show Codes View. For users who are familiar with Nota Bene commands, this provides a very useful tool. Even for the beginner, a misplaced «MD+BO» can be deleted and many commands can easily be edited. If you delete a command in Show Codes View, the entire command must be deleted including the opening and closing double angled brackets.

To switch to this mode click View and then Codes, or click Show Codes button at the bottom of the screen, or press Shift+F8.

In Show Codes View, you can move easily from command to command. Press Ctrl+= (the Control button and the equal sign at the top of your keyboard) to highlight the next full command. Pressing Ctrl+= repeatedly will take you from command to command throughout the document. When a command is highlighted, it can be deleted by pressing the Delete key. Press Escape to remove the highlighting, leaving the cursor in a position for editing the command or the text near the command. Information about a command can be obtained by placing your cursor on the command and pressing Ctrl+F1.

You can type a command directly into a document in Show Codes View. Use Ctrl+< and Ctrl+> to enter the opening and closing command brackets. These keystrokes can also be used to enter opening and closing brackets in the Find/Replace dialog for searching in Show Codes View.

By default, Show Codes View uses Courier New 8 point. The font and font size can be changed by clicking Tools, Preferences, Screen Display. The same font and font size will be used on the action line.

The document can be printed with the codes showing. This feature is recommended only for experienced Nota Bene users who are familiar with working with Nota Bene codes. To create a printable codes version of your document:

1Switch to Show Codes View.
2Click Tools, Code View Options, Printable Codes On/Off.
3A warning message will appear. Click Yes to proceed, or No to cancel.

As noted in the warning message, if you continue to work on the document, you will insert regular commands and thus create a hybrid document. To restore the document to Page Layout View, return to Show Codes View and click Tools, Code View Options, Printable Codes On/Off again.
