Page Layout View

Page Layout view provides the "what you see is what you get" view, where the screen shows how the document will look when printed.

This view can be accessed by clicking View and then Page Layout, or by clicking the Page Layout View button (the blue A), or by pressing Shift+F5. Your document can be enlarged or reduced for on-screen viewing by using the Zoom feature with this view only.

In Page Layout view, you have the option of displaying various non-printing markers that appear on-screen to indicate the presence of certain commands. For example, a blue pentagon with an X in it indicates the presence of a forced page break. A red box around a superscripted number indicates that the presence of a footnote or end note. These markers can be turned on or off by clicking View, Show/Hide Markers, Configure or by pressing Shift+F10, or by clicking the Configure/Cycle Markers button. You can also display or hide markers for characters like space, hard return and tab. For more information, see Markers.

Page Layout View is the default view, the way files will appear when called to screen.

To change this default, click Tools, Preferences, Document Views. The Document Views dialog will appear. This dialog can also be used to eliminate the offset or margin in Page Layout view so that more area is devoted to the text of your document, to display the page on the left side of the screen (as in earlier versions), and to set preferences for showing or hiding various formatting commands.

The Page Layout (Headings Only) option on the View menu hides body text if the file uses the Framework/Outline structure. Clicking View, Page Layout will display body text again.

In versions 5, 6 and 7, Page Layout View was called Graphics View.
