Inserting Citations

Rather than typing citations into a footnote window or into the text of a document, citations are entered by opening Ibidem, finding the record you want to cite and then directing the program to insert the citation. In  most cases, you can use the Quick Cite Bar to quickly and easily enter your citations. The Quick Cite Bar is at the top right of the Ibidem screen. It is also available on Popup Ibidem. For more complex citations and more options, use the Cite Pane. Open the Cite Pane from the View menu on the main Ibidem screen. Or if you are operating Ibidem in Slide-Out Mode, open it by clicking the Cite tab on the right side of the Ibidem screen.

For each document, one Ibidem database is used and a reference style is defined for the citations and for the reference list. If you are using an Academic Style, the reference style is set automatically. If not, you can use the Set Reference Style dialog to select the database, the style for citations, and the style for the reference list or bibliography. If you try to enter citations without first setting the reference style, you will be prompted to accept the default settings or go to the Set Reference Style dialog. The reference style can easily be changed at any time by using the Set Reference Style dialog.

Using the cite pane gives you many more options for your citation. See Cite Pane.

Once a citation is entered, it will display on screen in blue, indicating that it was generated by Ibidem and that there is a dynamic link between the citation and Ibidem.. It will not print in blue. A bibliography of works cited will be generated automatically and it will also display in blue.

If you are citing a record that has been previously cited, the Ibidem can convert subsequent citations to the short form specified by the style you are using (or as specified in the Cite Pane). Depending on the settings in your Auto Update Options dialog, this can be done automatically or when you manually (click Cite, Update Dynamic on the Ibidem menu, or press Alt+F7). For more information, see Updating Citations.
