For each document, the style for the citations and the reference list must be defined before you can insert citations. If you have defined an Academic Style Manual for your document (File, New or Format, Style Manual), the style for citations and reference list will already be defined. If you have not defined an Academic Style Manual (or if you wish to change the formatting of citations and reference list to a different publishing style), you can use Ibidem's Set Reference Style dialog to select from a long list of publishing styles. The Set Reference Style dialog is also used to specify which Ibidem database will be used for the document.
If you attempt to insert citations before defining the reference style, you will be prompted to either set the style or accept default settings. You can easily change the document's reference style at any time. You should not normally need to change the bibliographic database that is linked to the document, assuming that you maintain only one bibliographic database in Ibidem (as recommended). If you do change the Ibidem database that is used for the document, you will need to reinsert all citations from the new database.
To define or change the reference style for a document:
| 1 | Open the Set Reference Style for Current Document dialog in either of the following ways: |
| • | From the main Nota Bene screen, click Format, References, Set Reference Style. |
| • | From the main Ibidem screen, click Cite, Set Reference Style. |
| • | From Popup Ibidem, click the button to the right of the name of the database. |
| 2 | Click the Database & Options tab to select the database to be used for the document. Highlight the database to be used (the database that was open when you started this process will be highlighted by default, so, in most cases, no changes will need to be made to this tab). For more information, see Database & Options Tab. Do not click OK until you have completed steps 3, 4 and 5 below. |
| 3 | Click the In-Text Citation Format tab to select the publishing style for in-text citations. Click the radio button for Footnote/Endnote or Short Form or Reference Number and then highlight the publishing style you want to use on the list below (e.g. MLA, Chicago, Journal of the American Academy of Religion). Make other selections if desired. For more information, see In-Text Citation Style. |
| 4 | Click the Reference List Format tab to select the publishing style to be used for the reference list. If you want to match your reference list or bibliography to the style you selected for the in-text citations, click the second check box. Otherwise, click on the style you want to use. For more information, see Reference List Style |
| 5 | Click the Advanced Options tab to if you want to change or review the way that Ibidem locates records or if you are using the Alt Cite feature. For more information, see Advanced Options. |
| 6 | After making selections in each of the these tabs, click OK. |
Changing the reference style after inserting citations is easy and the process is the same as that described above. However, if you change the document's reference style after inserting citations, you will need to update the citations. This can be done by pressing the Update Dynamic Citations button on the left side of the main Nota Bene screen or press Alt+F7. For more information, see Updating Citations.
