Searching/Selecting Records

Most searches can be done directly from the main Ibidem screen or from Popup Ibidem by using the Quick Search Bar. The Search/Query Pane provides options for more complex searches. Open the Search/Query Pane from the main Ibidem screen in one of the following ways:

If you are operating in Slide-Out Mode, click the Search tab on the left side of the Ibidem screen.

Click View, Search/Query Pane

Press Alt+Q

Press Ctrl+F for a Keys search or Ctrl+T for a Text search.

Ibidem lets you search for records in three ways. The third of these options is available only if you have purchased the Archiva add-on module. Select one of the following options at the top of the Search Pane and follow the links below for more detailed instructions.

Keys:  Select records by searching only indexed fields. Sometimes called a fast search, this search will find only text that is at the beginning of the field, or after a semi-colon (semi-colons should be used to separate multiple entries within a field, e.g. multiple authors or multiple keywords). See Keys/Fast Search.

Text:  Select records by searching for any text in any field. Text search will find text that is at any place in the field. More complex search strings can be entered using Boolean operators. See Text Search.

Web Libraries: Use Archiva to search web libraries. See Archiva: Search On Line Libraries.

When you do a keys/fast search or a text search, Ibidem will display all records matching the search criteria in the database pane. This selection of records can be saved as a subset and easily opened again by using the subset pane (Alt+U). See Subsets. You can return to the full database by clicking the Entire Database button, or by pressing Ctrl+E.

To do a keys search:

1Open the Search Pane in one of the ways described above, and make sure that the Keys radio button at the top is selected.
2Enter the search term(s) in the appropriate field text box.
3Set the options for linking fields with And / Or to your preference.
4Click OK.

To do a text search:

1Press the Text Search button on the Ibidem screen or press Ctrl+T or click Select, Text Search. The Search Database (All Text) dialog will display.
2Enter the search term(s) in the appropriate text boxes for fields to search.
3Set the options for linking fields with And / Or to your preference.
4Click OK.

In either the Fast Search dialog or the Text Search dialog, the fields can be displayed using their long names or their short 2-character names. To change the display, place your cursor on the vertical border between the field names and the blank spaces that follow each field name. Your cursor will take the form of a double-headed arrow when you have it properly positioned. Hold your mouse button down and drag to the left to display the short names or to the right to display the long names.
