Cite Pane

The Cite Pane can be used to insert a citation and/or to add a work to be included in the reference list. In most cases you can use the Quick Cite Bar to insert a citation. But the Cite Pane gives you more complex options.

To use the Cite Pane to insert a citation, follow steps 1-4 in Inserting Citations to position the cursor in your document, open your Ibidem database, and find the work that you would like to cite. Then open the Cite Pane. It can be opened by clicking View, Cite Options Pane or by clicking Cite, Cite Options or by pressing Alt+O. If you are running Ibidem in Slide-Out Mode, you can open the Cite Pane by clicking the Cite tab on the right side of the Ibidem screen.

There are three tabs on this dialog:

Standard Tab

Page # and/or Locator
Enter a single page number or a range of pages. A range of pages should be entered with a hyphen and no spaces. For some citations, you might want to use a text identifier instead of, or in addition to, page numbers. For example, you might want to cite Section 2.5 instead of a page number. Enter the text locator exactly as you want it to appear in the citation.

Exclude
Author's name or year of publication can be excluded from the in-text citation, and capitalization can be suppressed.
Author's Name: Check this option if you have mentioned the author's name in the sentence prior to the citation, and wish to exclude the author's name from the in-text citation.
Year: Check this option if you have mentioned the year of publication in the sentence prior to the citations, and you wish to exclude the year of publication from the in-text citation.
Suppress Title Capitalization: Check this option to override Ibidem's Style definition for capitalization of titles according to the guidelines for the publishing style selected.  If you are citing a work in a language other than English, you may wish to suppress the title capitalization and enter the correct capitalization in the database record. For more information, see Titles.

Short Title

Use this option to define the short title to use in citations.

From Database: Check this option to use the contents of the Subsequent Cite Title field in your database as the shortened title for subsequent cites of the work.
Current File: Check this option to enter a short title to use in this document.

Options to Include Only in Reference List or Exclude from Reference List
If both of these boxes are unchecked, the work will be cited in the paper and included in the reference list or bibliography at the end of the paper. Check the first option to if you have consulted the work, and wish to include it in the bibliography for the paper, but do not wish to cite the work directly. Check the second option if you want to cite the work, but do not want to include it in the reference list.
Citation Type
There are several different types of in-text citation types from which to choose:
Allow Automatic Shortening (if Work Previously Cited): Select this setting for the Citation type if you want Ibidem to automatically shorten titles for works previously cited in the paper.
Force Shortened Reference (Even if Not Previously Cited): Select this setting for the Citation type if you want to use shortened titles in all your in-text citations.
Force Full Reference (Even if Previously Cited): Select this setting for the Citation type if you want to include the full titles of works in all citations, even if they have been previously cited in the paper.
