The Note Format dialog is used to format all of the notes in a series. It can be opened from within Nota Bene by clicking Format, Notes and then selecting the series to be formatted (usually Series I). Or the same dialog can be opened from within an open Footnote Window by clicking on the Note Format button. Settings in this dialog will apply to all footnotes, including those generated by Ibidem.
The Note Format dialog contains two major sections: Set Format and Set Number.
Set Format: If you want to adjust the format of the notes, check this box and complete the information as follows:
| • | Choose whether you want to use Footnotes or Endnotes by clicking the appropriate radio button. If you choose footnotes, the choices that pertain to endnotes will not be active and vice versa. |
| • | Footnotes are placed at the bottom of each page. For pages that do not contain a full page of text (e.g. the last page of a chapter), you can select whether you want the footnote at the bottom of the page or after the last line of text. Use the drop down list to make your selection. |
| • | Click on the Separator button if you want to format the line or other text that separates the footnotes from the body text. See Footnote Separator. |
| • | Click on the Wrapped button if you want to format the line or other text that separates a footnote that is continued from the previous page from the body text. See Footnote Wrap Separator. |
| • | If you clicked the Endnotes radio button, use the drop down list to select the text that will appear before the list of endnotes. |
| • | Click the Title Format button if you want to format the title (the text that will appear before the list of endnotes). A dialog box will appear showing the formatting currently in place. Unchecked boxes indicate that the formatting will be based on formatting currently in place in the document at that point. All of the boxes should remain unchecked unless you specifically want to assign formatting codes that will remain in effect regardless of the settings that are active for the rest of the document. If you check any of the boxes, click on the related button to change the formatting. Click OK to activate any changes you made or Cancel to cancel. |
| • | Click the Placement button if you want to customize the placement of the endnotes. By default, endnotes are placed at the end of the document, but they can be placed elsewhere (e.g., at the end of chapter or at the cursor position). |
| • | The lower box within the Set Format section sets the format for the notes (footnotes or endnotes). The selections you make will be illustrated in the preview box in the middle of the dialog. |
| • | Click the Font (#) button to change the font for the note number. |
| • | Click on the drop down list to select spaces, tabs or punctuation before or after the note number. The number sign symbol (#) represents the note number. A blank yellow box represents a space. A yellow box with arrow pointing to a vertical line on the right represents a tab, and punctuation including periods, parentheses and brackets are as shown. |
| • | Click the Font (Note) button to change the font for the text in the note. |
| • | Click the Layout button to change the layout of the note. Three tabs are available for making changes to layout: Indentation, Alignment and/or Spacing. |
| • | Select Right-to-Left as Overall Orientation if you are writing in Hebrew or Arabic and want the notes to begin at the right margin. |
Set Number: If you want to adjust the numbering (or lettering) of the superscripted reference numbers, check this box and complete the information as follows:
| • | Check the Include Unnumbered Author Note box if you would like to have an initial unnumbered note. |
| • | Use the Format drop down list to select the style of numbers, letters or symbols you would like to use for the superscripted footnote references. |
| • | Use the slider control to set the starting number or letter. |
| • | Use the Numbering Sequence drop down list to select Begin Sequential, Continue Sequential or Restart on Each Page. Continue Sequential allows you to combine the file with other files and continue the sequence of notes from another file. |
If you would like to keep the settings you have selected as defaults for use in new documents, check the Save As Defaults box.
The format of individual notes can be changed as you would change any text. Select text in the note and right-click on it to open a right-click menu with icons that can be used to change font, font size, mode and more.
