When a footnote is created, Nota Bene inserts a superscripted reference number in the text. The SF (Set Footnote Number) command sets the style (numbers, letters, symbols) and the starting value of footnotes. By default, Nota Bene uses decimal numbers (1, 2, 3 ...) beginning with 1. You do not need to set the style if you want to use the default setting.
To change the style or starting value of the superscripted reference number:
| 1 | Move the cursor to the top of your document (it must be before the first footnote).
|
| 2 | Press F9 to access the action line. |
| 3 | Type sf followed by a space and then the starting number of the first footnote using either decimal numbers (1, 2, 3 ...), uppercase or lower case roman numerals (I, II, III ... or i, ii, iii ...) or uppercase or lower case letters (A, B, C ... or a, b, c ...) For example, type SF1 ix to use lowercase roman numerals for series I footnotes starting with ix. |
| 4 | Press F10 to implement the command. |
| 5 | The footnote wrap separator window will appear at the bottom of your screen. Type the text for the footnote separator, including carriage returns (Enter) for blank lines. Then press F3 to close the footnote wrap separator window and complete the creation of the footnote separator. |
NB:
| • | To issue the above command with respect to footnotes in series 2 or 3, substitute SF2 or SF3 for SF (SF1 is the same as SF). |
| • | To restart the sequence at the beginning of each page, issue the SF command with a hyphen before the starting value. For example, type SF1 -a to use lowercase letters for series I footnotes with the superscripted reference letter starting again with a at the beginning of each page. |
| • | Unnumbered footnotes can be set by entering the SF command with no number after the space (type SF or SF1) |
