New in Version 14

Nota Bene 14 was released in May/June 2023. The following features are new in this version.

Smart Conversion: A DOCX file can be opened in Nota Bene using the File Open dialog. See Open DOCX file

The file will open as an untitled Nota Bene file. It can be saved with the same name as the DOCX file and a .NB extension.
If the file contains Zotero citations, you will be given the option of importing of the documents' citations from Zotero databases into your Ibidem database and simultaneously making them dynamic Ibidem citations in the converted document.
If the file is an academic paper (i.e., if it contains footnotes), you will be given the option of adding an Academic Style.
The text of the DOCX file and any simple tables will be converted to NB format. Import of more sophisticated tables, graphics, and numbered lists is not yet supported (but is under development).

Automatic Orbis Textbases: Textbases can be created automatically, making it much easier to use Orbis. Automatic textbases are available for Recently Edited NB Files, Manuscript Files, Ibidem Note-Taking Files, Files in Current Folder, and more. No need to create your own textbase! See Automatic Textbases

User-defined Orbis Textbases: For those who want to define their own textbases, Orbis has easier textbase creation as well as much faster indexing. See New Textbase

Popup Orbis: A brand new popup Orbis with a smaller footprint can be used for almost all Orbis functions while your document is open for editing. This new screen is now the main Orbis screen (F4), but the full Orbis screen is still available. See Popup Orbis

Popup Ibidem: Popup Ibidem has been significantly enhanced. It can now be docked -- fixed in place with your document and popup Ibidem both easily accessible. The bottom pane can now show all citations in the file, and other Ibidem panes can be opened as needed. See Popup Ibidem

Popup Ibidem and Popup Orbis form a pair.

Popup Orbis is new in version 14. Popup Ibidem was introduced in version 13, and has been significantly enhanced in version 14.
Both offer the essential capabilities of the fuller modules (Ibidem and Orbis) in a smaller form, making them easier to use while you write.
Both can now be either popped up (floated) or docked (fixed in place on the right side of the main Nota Bene window).
Both can be resized, either in floating mode, or (horizontally) when docked.
The last selected mode (and position and size) will be remembered after closing, and when reinvoked.
These two popups can be shown at the same time (and, when docked, either replacing, or in addition to, the right-side multi-purpose dialog bar).

Database Expansion: Ibidem's capacity has been significantly expanded: You can now have a virtually limitless number of records. The original 32,000 record limit was been expanded first to 64,000, and now to over sixteen million (16,777,215, to be precise). Text searches of databases (from Ctrl+T) are now up to 10 times faster and the number of subsets has been increased. See Database Limitations.

Orbis Indexing: The creation of Orbis textbases is now at least 10 times faster than it was in version 13.  In addition, everything is now done entirely in the background, so you can continue working in Nota Bene, without interruption. Orbis now takes full advantage of your computer's power — it is both “multi-thread” when creating/updating a single textbase and can support multiple textbases at the same time.

RIS Format: Ibidem records can now be saved to an RIS format file for sharing with others. See Exporting Records

Archiva/Archiva+: Archiva is a web research tool that has been available as an optional add-on module since 2007. In version 14, the basic Archiva functions of searching on-line libraries and databases are included as part of the Nota Bene Workstation. A new Archiva+ add-on module provides some brand new web research tools as well as some features that were previously available in Archiva Premium or Platinum. Those who previously purchased Archiva Premium or Platinum will continue to have access to the features they previously had access to even if they do not move up to the new Archiva+ program. See Archiva Overview

Workspace Tabs Right-clicking on the workspace tab (the tabs that show all open documents), will display the document information that you see when you hover over the tab. In addition, a right-click menu will open a menu. See Workspace Tabs.

Popup Find All: A new popup dialog (Ctrl+Shift+F) can be used to search a displayed file for all instances of a word or phrase. See Popup Find All

Select text: You can now select larger blocks of text with the mouse, without needing to drag the mouse to the new position. Click at the beginning of the block you want to select. Move (without clicking) to the ending position and Shift+Click to select to that position. See Select Text

Auto-Saving Notes: Nota Bene now saves open elements every second (even long footnotes are relatively small, and this happens instantaneously, without causing delays in editing), making sure that you never lose anything important that you write. See Automatic Save

Add Academic Style to Existing File: It is now easy to add an Academic Style to a file that does not yet have a framework/outline structure. A “wizard” option will guide you through every step of the process, automatically highlighting titles and block-indented quotes as it goes through the file. See Add an Academic Style.

Cloud Improvements: Support for cloud storage has been improved. See Cloud Storage and Orbis in the Cloud.

Document Dialog Bar: The Document Dialog Bar is now at the bottom of the File menu, below the list of the 9 most recently edited files. Use this dialog to open any of the 100 most recently edited files. See Document Dialog Bar.

Installation: Changes have been made to allow installation without administrative privileges. This means that those using University computers no longer need to involve IT departments in initial installation and/or updates.
