New in Version 12

Version 12 was released in April 2018. The following features are new in this version.

Cloud Storage: Nota Bene users have been putting their Ibidem databases in the cloud for a long time, but now you can keep all your data in the cloud — your documents, Ibidem databases, note-taking files, and your Orbis textbases. See Cloud Storage.

Major Changes to Headers and Footers: The headers/footer dialog and the header/footer window have been changed to make it easier and more intuitive to add or edit headers and foolers. See Headers and Footers. You can now edit headers and footers in place, by clicking on the header or footer area at the top or bottom of each page. See Editing Headers/Footers.

Edit Footnotes/Endnotes in Place: You can now edit footnotes in place without opening the fixed-location command window at the bottom of the screen. Saving is now automatic when you edit a note. New Tools, Preferences options allow you to edit multiple endnotes while remaining on the endnote page (and other options). See Editing a Footnote.

Major Changes to Frames and Graphics: You can now paste images directly (using Ctrl+V) into a Nota Bene file. The image will be auto resized so that images larger than the page width will be able to be pasted into the file. NB now supports over 150 image formats. A new frame type that auto resizes the graphic as the frame is resized. This allows you to easily add captions above and/or below the embedded graphic. You can now use the mouse (in place, without opening another window) to change the position of the frame, resize the frame, resize the white space (inset) between the frame and the surrounding text, resize the graphic and crop the graphic. Image transformation functions are now available that let you rotate images, blur, or sharpen, change tint or hue and more. You can edit frames, and any graphics contained in them, in place, without opening another graphics-editing window. See Images/Objects and Frames.

Edit Frames/Graphics in Place: You can now edit frames and graphics by clicking on the frame or graphic image. See Editing Frames/Graphics in Place.

Expand/Convert/Shorthand: Certain key combinations will automatically change to something else. For example, if you type (c), you will get © or if you type two dashes, you will get an em dash. This feature can be turned off or customized. See Expand/Convert/Shorthand

New Element Map: When working with manuscript files composed of multiple chapters, or even in a longer single file, there are often multiple headers and footers, and note-formatting commands, and these are not always consistent. NB 12 provides an new “map” view of the file that can show the location of all headers and footers along with any set-page-number commands, or all note-formatting (including set-note-number) commands, allowing you efficiently manage your manuscript and assure consistency. See Element Map

Change Selection Color: You can choose the color used when you select or highlight text. You can use the same color or a different color to show the highlighed terms when using the Find All option in the Find/Replace (Ctrl+F) menu. In previous versions, the selection color was a stark white text on black background. Many people prefer the more subtle colors that are now available. See Selection Color.

Open PDF Files: PDF files can now be opened in Nota Bene using the File Open dialog. You can either open the file as a PDF file, or you can extract the text from the PDF file into a Nota Bene file. See Open PDF File.

Open DOCX Files: You can now open DOCX files from the File Open dialog, even if you do not have Word installed on your computer. This change means that DOCX files can also be opened if you are using the NB+Wine version on a Mac. See Convert to Nota Bene.

Easy Updates: Version 12 introduces a simplified process for receiving updates. When a free update is available, you will be asked if you want to install it. With your approval, it will be installed automatically in one step. There is no longer any need for you to log in, download and then install. See Auto Updates.
