Convert to Nota Bene

Nota Bene uses RTF (Rich Text Format) filters to convert files to Nota Bene. Most word processors can read RTF files and can write RTF files, so this format is used for moving a file from one word processor to another. Nota Bene's RTF import filters work in several ways as described below. For information on Nota Bene's export filter (for converting from Nota Bene to another format) see Converting to Other Formats.

Copy and paste

You can copy and paste text from a web site or from another application to Nota Bene. Simply define text on the web page or in an open file in another application and copy it (in virtually any Windows program, File, Copy or Ctrl+C will copy text). Then go to Nota Bene, place your cursor where you want the text to appear and paste it (File, Paste or Ctrl+V). Technically, when the text is copied from the other application, it is saved in RTF format on th Windows clipboard. When it is pasted into Nota Bene, it is converted from RTF to Nota Bene format.

Open a Microsoft Word file

A DOCX file can be opened from the File Open dialog in Nota Bene, just as you would open a Nota Bene file. Use the File Open dialog (click File, Open or press Ctrl+O) to open the file as you would open a Nota Bene file. If the DOCX file has footnotes, you will be given the opportunity to add an academic style to it. If it has Zotero citations, you will be given the opportunity to add those records to your Ibidem database, and simultaneously, make them dynamic Ibidem citations in the converted document. See Open DOCX file.

Open an RTF file or a file from another word processor

An RTF file can easily be opened in Nota Bene using the File Open dialog. Most word processors can save files in RTF format.

Open a PDF file

You can open a PDF file from the File Open dialog in Nota Bene. The file can either be opened as a PDF file with full formatting, or the text can be extracted from the PDF file and opened in a new Nota Bene file. See Open PDF File.

Convert multiple files at the same time

A group (or batch) of files that are in the same folder can be converted from Word, WordPerfect or RTF using the Batch Conversion feature. For more information about converting multiple files simultaneously, see Batch Conversion.
