Headers and footers that are already in place in a document can be edited, or you can change the headers/footers part way through the document.
The easiest way to edit an existing header or footer is to click on it:
| 1 | Move the cursor to the header or footer you want to edit. The cursor will change shape indicating that it is over a header or footer. Click once on the header or footer. |
| 2 | An abbreviated version of the header/footer window that shows just one header or one footer will open. Make changes directly in this window. |
| 3 | If you would like to make changes to both the header and the footer and/or to other headers/footers that are defined on the same page (e.g., changes to both even pages and odd pages), click the plus sign at the left end of the green bar to show all of the thumbnails that are associated with this group. Make changes using the Header/Footer Window. |
| 4 | When you are finished, click the Save All Edits and Close button at the top right of the Header/Footer window or press F3. |
To change the structure of headers/footers that have been defined for the document (for example, to change from "all pages use same header/footer" to "even pages and odd pages used different headers/footers"), you must open the main Header/Footer dialog.
| 1 | Place your cursor on page 1 (or on the page where the headers/footers are defined). |
| 2 | Click Format, Headers and Footers, Insert Headers and/or Footers. |
| 3 | A dialog will open that gives you the option to choose a different structure (all pages use same header/footer, or different headers/footers for initial page and/or for odd/even pages). Make your selection and then click Replace. This will delete the existing headers and footers and replace them with new ones. |
For more complex documents such as those that may change headers/footers in a number of places, you can see the structure of headers/footers and open the header or footer that you wish to edit by clicking Format, Headers and Footers, View Edit or Remove Headers and Footers. The View Add Edit Remove dialog will open.
On the left side of this dialog, click the icon for the set of headers/footers that you wish to view or edit, then select one of the following options:
| Open to Edit: The selected header/footer window will open so that you can make changes. |
| Modify: Select this option if you would like to make changes to the structure of how headers/footers appear on initial, odd and even pages. |
| Cancel: This option will insert a blank header or footer that prevents any previous header or footer from continuing. |
| Delete: This option will delete any definition of a header or footer on the current page, allowing any previous header or footer to continue. |
| New Header: The option to create a new header will be active if you have clicked on a page that does not have a header/footer defined. |
| Suppress: The active header or footer will be hidden on the current page, but will continue on subsequent pages. |
If you would like to add a new header part way through your document, you can use the New Header option as described above, or you can simply place your cursor at the top of the page where you want the new header/footer to start and simply add a new header or footer. See Changing Headers/Footers.
