Editing a Footnote/Endnote |
|
A footnote or endnote can be opened for editing by clicking on the text of the note. Alternatively, you can place your cursor on the call number in the text and press F3. The footnote window will open and you can make whatever changes you want. Edits made to notes are automatically saved as click back into the body of the text. They can also be saved by pressing F3. To cancel changes, either right-click into another note or the body of the text, or press Ctrl+F3.
If your footnote (or endnote) contains a bibliographic citation that has been generated by Ibidem, the text of the citation will be displayed in blue (or under certain circumstances in pink or maroon). If you would like to edit the text of a citation that has been generated by Ibidem, you should make the changes in the Ibidem record and then update your dynamic citations to see the change in your document. For information on bibliographic citations, and how to edit them, see Ibidem Overview and Inserting Citations (Ibidem).
Footnotes can also be edited in Show Codes View. To edit a note in codes view, place your cursor close to the note marker and switch to Show Codes View (click View, Codes or press Shift+F8 or press the Show Codes View button on the Nota Bene screen). You will see a command that looks something like the following, and you can edit the text of the note.
«FN1This is the text of the footnote.»
Edit the text that is inside of the beginning and ending command brackets, but do not delete or change the beginning or ending command brackets or the FN1 command. After making changes, switch back to Page Layout View (click View, Page Layout or press Shift+F5 or press the Page Layout button on the Nota Bene screen).
With your cursor in the body of a document, you can move to the next footnote or endnote marker by pressing Shift+Alt+Home to move to the previous footnote or Shift+Alt+End to go to the next footnote. The Go To dialog bar (Ctrl+G) can be used to go to the previous or next footnote or to a specific footnote number.
Click on either the footnote separator or the wrap separator to edit them in place. Changes that you make will be applied to separators wherever they appear in the document.
If you are editing an endnote, the endnote will normally open in place at the end of the document. However, you can set your footnote/endnote preferences to open endnotes at the point in the text where the call number appears. Similarly, you can select whether pressing F3 to close the note returns you to a position in the text immediately after the closed note or returns your cursor to its position immediately prior to clicking on the note. The latter setting allows you to edit multiple endnotes while remaining on the endnote page. To review the options and/or change your preferences, click Tools, Preferences and double-click on Footnotes/Endnotes. See Footnote/Endnote Preferences.
