Search Strings

A search string can consist of a single word or it can consist of various combinations of words, phrases, search operators, parentheses  and/or wildcard characters. Search strings can be entered in either

Search strings can be typed directly into the Find box at the top of the Orbis screen. You can type search operators directly or you can use the Search Pane and click the search operator buttons under the search string text box to enter opening or closing parentheses, and, or, xor or not. Orbis will recognize the words and, or, xor, not as search operators when they are typed in a search string (note that this is not the case in Ibidem). Full search strings can also be used in Popup Orbis.

The following combinations of operators are valid in Orbis:

Operator        Can be followed by:
word        word, and, or, xor, not
AND        word, not
OR        word, not
XOR        word, not
NOT        word

There is no limit to the number of logical connectives that you can use in a search string, as long as the length of the entire string does not exceed 256 characters.

Note that Orbis always evaluates search strings from left to right, except that words or phrases operated on by NOT take precedence, and that search clauses in parentheses are evaluated first.
