Multilingual Spell Check

Nota Bene can check the spelling of words in over twenty languages. Multilingual spell check for Roman alphabet languages is available in Nota Bene Workstation even if you have not purchased the Lingua module. Nota Bene does not provide spell checking in non-Roman alphabets (Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Cyrillic).

You can choose a single language/dictionary to use for spell checking, or the program can automatically switch between dictionaries to check spelling in up to 8 languages in a single document. In order for this automatic switching to take effect, you need to:

Have language markers (LA commands) in the file, as described below.

Indicate which dictionaries to use for which language region. See Configure: Dictionary Tab.

Languages

The program uses language markers (LA commands) to mark regions of text as being in a particular language. LA commands must be present if you are going to use multilingual spelling, hypenation and/or thesaurus. You can mark text you have already written or you can mark text as you write. When text has been properly marked, you will see commands like the following in Codes view: «LAGerman» or  «LAEnglish»

In Page Layout view, the language markers will be shown as a non-printing vertical green line (or, at the user's option, as a small black squiggle). For more information, including instructions on how to turn non-printing markers on or off, see Markers (scroll down to the Special Command Markers section on that page).

Users of Lingua should find that any Hebrew, Greek, Cyrillic or Arabic text that has been entered already has the required LA codes. LA codes are entered when you use Ctrl+Shift+H or Ctrl+Shift+G, etc. to switch to Hebrew, Greek, etc. While Nota Bene does not provide spell checkers for non-Roman alphabets, having text these languages marked with LA codes (e.g. «LAHebrew») is important because it will specify that the text in this region should not be spell checked.

Language markers can be inserted by using the Action Line or by using the Language Bar.To use the Language Bar to insert language markers in text that you are about to type:

1Click Insert, Language Selection, or press Ctrl+Shift+L to open the Language Bar on the left side of your screen.
2The name of your default language should display in the box at the top of the language bar.
3Make sure that the language you want to type in is listed as one of the Recent Languages at the top (open Roman or other alphabet and select the language).
4 Click to select the language you want to use in the Recent Languages section.
5Click the arrow beside the Select button at the bottom and choose "Insert Language Marker at Cursor."

To use the Language Bar to add language markers to text that you have already typed::

1Click Insert, Language Selection, or press Ctrl+Shift+L to open the Language Bar on the left side of your screen.
2Highlight the block of text in your document that is in a different language.
3The name of your default language should display in the box at the top of the language bar.
4Make sure that the language used in the highlighted block is listed as one of the Recent Languages at the top (open Roman or other alphabet and select the language).
5Click to select the language you want to use in the Recent Languages section.
6 Click the arrow beside the Select button at the bottom and choose "Change Language of Selected Block."

Right click menu: If you have previously used the above method to select the languages that you use, the right-click menu provides a convenient way of marking text .The languages that you have most recently used are remembered and the program keeps a list of them. You can select a language by right-clicking on the NB screen and choosing the specific language that you want from a drop-down list on the right-click menu. If a block of text is selected, LA commands will be inserted at the beginning and the end, inserting the selected LA at the beginning, and then resetting the LA at the end to the language that was in effect at that cursor position.

Language markers can be seen and edited in Codes View or in Draft View.

If you normally type in a language other than the one that is displayed as your default language, see Changing the Default Language.
