Configure: DictionaryTab

The Spell Configure dialog's Dictionary tab is used to select which main dictionaries to use for different languages, and which user dictionaries to use. For more information on main and user dictionaries, see Dictionary.

Click Proof, Configure Spell to open the Spell Configure dialog. The Dictionary Tab is the second tab. Settings on this tab can be changed as follows:

1In the Alphabets column, click to highlight one alphabet. If you have not purchased Lingua, the Roman Alphabet will be the only option. If you do have Lingua, you will be able to select Hebrew, Greek, Arabic or Cyrillic. Click Help,
2In the Languages column, click to highlight one of the languages that you plan to use.
3In the Main Dictionary column, click to highlight the dictionary you wish to use with the language that you selected in step 2. If the dictionary is not installed (as indicated by the check mark), you will be prompted to install it. Once installed, there should be a check mark next to the dictionary and it should be highlighted. If you have any problems installing the dictionary, see the note on installing main dictionaries below. If you select NONE, then spell checking will not be active in that language.
4Repeat steps 1 - 3 for each language that you plan to use. This will install any dictionaries that you plan to use, and associate them with the language.
5In the User Dictionary column, the default setting is to have General.spl checked, highlighted and with an asterisk next to it. This setting can be changed as follows:
All of the dictionaries listed are installed and available. The checked dictionaries are active. Click the box next to a dictionary to make it active. For example, AUTHORS.SPX contains a list of about 1250 names of authors in the humanities. If this box is checked, then the spell checker will recognize these names.
The dictionary with the asterisk is the Primary dictionary. The Primary dictionary is "your" dictionary--the one that will be changed when you add words or pairs. Normally this should be General.spl, but you can make one of the other .SPL dictionaries primary by clicking to highlight the dictionary and then clicking Make Primary. The SPX dictionaries cannot be the primary dictionary because they may be expanded and improved in future versions of Nota Bene, and the program would then overwrite the old version. Future updates will not overwrite the SPL dictionaries, so the SPL dictionary that  you designate as the Primary dictionary will retain any words that you add.
6At the bottom of the dialog, indicate how you want to handle words in languages that do not have dictionaries. They can be skipped or flagged (i.e., marked with a red squiggle or a yellow background).
7Make changes in any of the other tabs in this dialog if desired, and then click OK.

Nota Bene can check the spelling of words in over twenty languages, even switching dictionaries automatically based on language designators (LA commands) in the file. In order for this automatic switching to take effect, you need to: (1) have language markers (LA commands) in the file (see Multilingual Spell Check), and (2) indicate which dictionaries to use for each language region (as described in steps 1 - 4 above).

Installing Main Dictionaries: Main dictionaries are files with the extension .DIC in your Nbwin folder. When Nota Bene is installed, only two main dictionaries are installed, US.DIC for US English and UK.DIC for UK English. Over 20 dictionaries are available. When you follow instructions in step 3 above, Nota Bene checks the the existing drive and any CD drive for the appropriate file. If not found, Nota Bene tries to download the file from the web. Normally, the dictionary is installed and selected almost instantly.
