Changing the Default Language

If your primary language is a language other than US English, you can change the primary or default language, and you can change the main spell check dictionary. Once you have specified your default language and dictionary, the spell checker will function by default in the language you specify. You will still be able to type in other languages with automatic switching of dictionaries based on language markers in the file. See Multilingual Spell Check.

If you primarily use another language (e.g., German), you should take the following steps to set up your program: If you use UK English, you do not need to change the language. Just change the dictionary that is associated with English (and change the keyboard, if you are using a British keyboard).

If you normally type in a language other than the one that is displayed as your default language, you can change the default as follows:

1Click Insert, Language Selection, or press Ctrl+Shift+L to open the Language Bar on the left side of your screen.
2Make sure that the language that you wish to use as your default language is listed as one of the Recent Languages at the top (open Roman or other alphabet and select the language).
3Click to select the language that you would like to use as your default.
4 Click the arrow beside the Select button at the bottom and choose "Set Default Language." That language should now be displayed at the top of the Language Bar.
5If you would also like to select a different keyboard (e.g the German national keyboard instead of the NB Standard keyboard), click the arrow beside the NB Standard button and choose a different keyboard.,
6Review the settings on the Dictionary tab of the Spell Configure dialog (click Proof, Configure Spell to open this dialog) and make changes as necessary.

Note that on the Configure Options tab, you can choose your main dictionary. If you will be using the spell checker in only one language (the default language), then you can select that language. However, if you ever want to use multilingual spell checking, with the spell checker automatically switching dictionaries based on language markers (LA commands) in the file, then you should use the "Auto Based on Language" setting. See Configure Options Tab.
