Moving Through a Document |
|
There are several ways to move within an open file.
Scroll bars: Scroll bars are at the side of the screen. To move throughout the document, click on the arrows at the ends of the scroll bars or drag the button on the scroll bar to a new position. The cursor moves as you scroll throughout the document.
Directional keys: The 4 arrow keys (Left, Right, Up, Down) and the Page Up, Page Down, Home and End keys can be used to move through an open file. Up/down arrows move from body text through footnotes. You can change this so that the up/down arrows move only through the text, skipping the notes. See Footnote/Endnote Preferences.
Keyboard Shortcuts: Simple keystrokes can be used to move your cursor to a different place in the document. For a list of these shortcuts, see Moving through a document: keyboard shortcuts.
Go to: The Go To dialog can be used to move to certain defined places in a document, e.g., to a page, heading, footnote, etc. Click Edit, Go To (or press Ctrl+G). For more information, see Go To.
Action Line: The GO command can be used to move the cursor to a different page in the open document. See GO command.
Bookmark: Bookmarks can be used to move to a place you have previously identified. See Bookmark.
Cross References: If you use cross references in your document, you can double-click on the green cross reference to go to the point in the document where the reference label was inserted. See Cross References.
Moving from page to page: Buttons at the bottom of the scroll bars can be used to move the cursor to the next page, previous page, top of document or end of document. Or use Ctrl+PgUp to move to previous page or Ctrl+PgDown to move to the next page.
Moving from command to command: In Show Codes View, the next full command in the document can be highlighted by pressing Ctrl+= (the Control button and the equal sign at the top of your keyboard, not the equal sign on the keypad at the right). Holding the Ctrl button down while you repeatedly press the = button will take you from command to command throughout the document.
Moving from footnote to footnote: Within a document, you can move to the next footnote or endnote marker by pressing Shift+Alt+Home to move to the previous footnote or Shift+Alt+End to go to the next footnote. The Go To dialog (Ctrl+G) can be used to go to the previous or or next note (footnote or endnote) or to go to a specific note number. Finally, there is a configurable control to the left of the Status bar at the bottom left of your screen can be used to move to move easily to the previous or next footnote. Alternatively, this control can be configured so that it can be used to move to the previous or next annotation, header/footer or your choice of other elements. The Alt+Home/End keyboard shortcut is associated with this configurable control. See Alt+End/Home Cursor Movement.
Moving from opening quote to closing quote: You can move from an opening quote to the corresponding closing quote or from a closing quote to the corresponding opening quote. Similarly you can move from any open/close character (parentheses, bracket, etc.) to the corresponding closing or opening character. See Pairs.
