Footnote/Endnote Preferences

The Footnote Options dialog allows you to change default settings that control various option related to editing notes. To open the Footnote Options dialog, click Tools, Preferences and double-click on Footnotes/Endnotes.

Select the following options:

Cursor Options: Select whether the up/down arrows move from the body text into the footnotes, or instead move only through the body text.

Location of Opened Notes Using F3: If you are using F3 to open notes, the notes will normally be opened where they appear in the file -- footnotes at the bottom of the page, or endnotes at the end of the document. However, for endnotes, it may be more convenient to open them at the point in the text where the call number appears. This keeps you on the same page rather than moving to the end of the document to edit an endnote. You can choose to have footnotes or endnotes or both open in line at the location of the call number.

Action on Closing Note: When a note was opened by clicking on the note, then edited, and then saved by F3, the cursor will return to return to a position in the text immediately after the closed note. This setting can be changed so that the cursor returns to its position immediately prior to clicking on the note. This alternative setting allows you to edit endnotes and remain on the endnote page.

Note Separators Multiple Note Series: Most documents use only one series of notes. But for those documents that use 2 or 3 series of footnotes, and if different note separators are defined for different series, then the default setting will always use the series 1 separator as the first separator at the bottom of the page (even if the only notes on that page are series 2 or 3). You can choose instead to use the separator for the first series that appears on the page.
