Cross References |
|
With Nota Bene, you can refer to a place in your document, and Nota Bene will enter the correct page number (or footnote number or other counter number). For example, suppose you want to write "See the section on Travel in Guyana on page 361"; but you aren't sure that this section will stay on page 361. You can insert a non-printing reference label at the beginning of the section on Travel in Guyana , and then create a cross reference that will automatically insert the page number that corresponds to the non-printing reference label. To use cross references, one of Nota Bene's numbering functions must be active in the document (page numbering, footnotes, or counters that are used for numbered lists, outline numbers, or chapter numbers).
The procedure for creating references has two steps:
Menu instructions follow. If you prefer to use the action line, see ref, rep, rec commands.
Step I: Create a Label
This will insert an LB command in your document which can be seen in Show Codes view: LB. If markers are on, a blue dot will show the presence of this command in Page Layout view. If you have inserted the label in a counter (C0 to C14) the label will appear within the counter rather than in an LB command. The following are examples of how a text label and a counter label would appear in Show Codes view: «LBtravel» and «C11travel»
A label in a footnote/endnote must be placed at the beginning of the note. You can only have a single label in a note.
Step II: Create a Cross Reference
Once the cross reference has been created, it will appear on-screen in green, but it will print in black. You can double-click on the cross reference to go to the point in the document where the label was inserted.
The Cross References dialog includes the Label (for Cross References) dialog that is used in step I, and it can also be used to insert a label or to edit an existing label. For those who prefer the keyboard to the mouse, Alt+F6 will move your cursor back and forth between this open dialog and your open document.
