Backup Overview |
|
In Nota Bene as in any other program, it is important to protect your data by backing up your files regularly. We recommend that you save frequently as you are working and that you develop a regular system for periodically backing up your files and storing backed up files on another computer, disc or other backup medium. For use in addition to your regular backup system, Nota Bene provides two mechanisms for automatically backing up your files as you work. For more information, see Autosave and Backup.
Nota Bene's bibliographic database, Ibidem, is designed to be used to maintain a bibliographic database. If you are using Ibidem to develop a personal bibliographic database (or an important non-bibliographic database), backing up your Ibidem database is extremely important. If you do not want to loose your Ibidem data, your database(s) must be backed up and kept in a safe place on a separate computer or other backup medium. Please see Ibidem Backup for instructions on backing up Ibidem databases.
Your Orbis textbases consist of Nota Bene files. Provided that the files are available, the textbase can be reconstructed easily. Properly backing up your files as described in the first paragraph above is all you need to do to preserve your Orbis textbase.
If you have created or customized any of the following files, they should also be backed up.
•Spelling Dictionary, including Auto Replace pairs: The default editable dictionary is GENERAL.SPL. Note that this file is automatically customized when you are using the speller and indicate that a word should always be ignored (i.e., not flagged as a misspelled word). •Customized keyboards: Files that you have created with the .KBD extension. (Note that when upgrades are released, changes are made to the standard NB.KBD and to other keyboards that are provided with the program. You may need to recreate your customized keyboard each time a new release is issued so that you have the benefit of keyboard access to new features as well as your customizations.) •Phrase libraries: DEFAULT.LIB and any other .LIB files. •Customized Frameworks: NB-USER.FWL. •Templates: Files that you have created and saved in the Template folder. See Templates.
You should back up your Template folder and any of the above files that you customized. For information about where files are stored, see www.notabene.com/setup.html.
Most NB users should not attempt to transfer changes that have been made to default settings through Tools, Preferences (e.g., default font size or default zoom setting) from one computer to another. These changes can be made directly on the new computer through the Tools, Preferences menu.
