Archiva Articles (Web Databases) lets you capture bibliographic data from on-line article databases (whether journal, magazine, or newspaper articles, or chapter in anthologies or books, depending on the site) and convert them into Ibidem format so that you can reference/cite them in your ongoing work.
|
At the heart of Archiva Articles is a “clipboard watcher” that monitors text copied to the clipboard. If the copied text contains bibliographic records in a format which Archiva recognizes, it will convert the data in those records to Ibidem format, and add them to a database of “captured” records, which you can then selectively add to the databases of your own choosing.
Here’s how Archiva’s article capture works:
1. Access the web any way you’d like (as you regularly do through your browser, or—if you have Archiva
Premium—through Archiva itself)
2. If you find references that you want to cite, select the ones you want (to select the entire page,
simply use [Ctrl]+[A]), and copy them ([Ctrl]+[C])
3. The converted records will be added to the Archiva: Captured Records screen (appended to whatever
entries are already there from previous captures) right in front of your eyes!
At any time you can—as in all the other Archiva modules—simply choose them all, or check the works
you want (or the ones you want to exclude) and then easily append them to the Ibidem database(s)
of your choosing.
You can move from site to site, switch to some other task, do another search, take a break to teach or take a class, and then return to your work. Archiva will still be working for you . . .

Archiva effectively opens the door to literally hundreds upon hundreds of databases, and to tens of thousands of journals, as these are filtered through the primary data service providers.
The major vendor formats supported by Archiva, and from which it can capture journal article citations, include, among others:
CSA (Cambridge Scientific Abstracts)
EBSCOHost
WilsonWeb
OCLC First Search
• By the middle of 2007, this should cover many RLG/Eureka databases
InfoTrac
ProQuest
JSTOR
Project Muse
Ingenta
and more . . .

Archiva itself does not provide access to these sites, but only allows you to utilize information on sites to which you already, independently of Archiva, have access. While some of these supported sites provide free access, most require subscriptions, many of which will be available to you through your university or institution. But all such matters are your responsibility.
Whether you can access a particular journal or database in the above list (or as listed on the above links) depends on whether you access that journal or database from one of the supported gateways/ data providers (this will usually be determined by the services your university has subscribed to).
All capturing of records must be within the uses permitted by the site, or governed by the principle of fair use, both of which are your responsibility.
|
And best of all, Archiva can update its rules automatically (but under your control) from our web site, so you always have access to the latest refinements for this version of Archiva.
|
You can view the supported formats—and set various capture options—using the Configure Capture dialog:
|
And if for some reason the data you want to retrieve is not filtered through one of these supported services, you can:
Capture “bibliography formats” (Endnote, RefWorks, RIS) written by those search sites
Request that we develop direct support for that format
Write your own capture rules (as part of a collaborative effort with other Nota Bene Archiva users,
complete with forum, an on-line wiki describing how you do so, and a debugger that lets you trace
through your code)
|
Archiva captures these article citations more easily than you’ve ever imagined possible. There’s no need (although you can also do this, as a last resort) to click half a dozen different options to get the data you need (as you do with various less capable alternatives)—Archiva lets you select it from the very first search-results screen displayed!
