NB 14 UPGRADE FAQ
Version 14 provides you with many additional features and improvements. This is a major upgrade, and we hope that the new conveniences will make your work easier and more efficient.
Q. What is new in version 14?
A. NB 14 adds a large number of both new features and simplified/enhanced existing features to the program, further improving NB for Windows and the Mac.

Q. What does it cost to upgrade to Nota Bene 14?
A. The price to upgrade from version 13 to version 14 is $139. There is an additional Mac -Compatibility charge for Mac users. For information about upgrades from earlier versions, see NB 14 Pricing.
Q. How do I purchase the upgrade to NB 14?
A. To purchase, go to our on-line order form and log in as a current customer. When you log in, you will see which version you have and what price applies to your upgrade. (Or click here to see an overview of the pricing.)
When you upgrade, you will receive a full copy of the program that can be installed on a new computer (there is no need to install your old version first), or it can be installed on a computer that is already running an older version of Nota Bene.
Q. I have paid for NB 14 and need to download it again.
A. Your single-user license allows you to download the latest edition of Nota Bene 14 and to install it on more than one computer (provided that it is just for your use). You will be able to download Nota Bene 14 for as long as it is our main shipping version. To download, or to get your product key, go to the following page and log in: Find Download.
Q. Can I use Nota Bene on my Mac?
A. Yes, you can. Please see NB on the Mac
Q. Does the upgrade purchase price include Orbis+ and Lingua?
A. If you previously purchased Orbis+ and/or Lingua, then these add-on modules will automatically be included in your upgrade. If you have not previously purchased them, they will be available to be added to your order at the prices shown on the order form. When you log in, you will be presented with the opportunity to purchase these add-ons only if you have not previously purchased them.
Q. Does the upgrade purchase price include Archiva Premium or Archiva Platinum?
A. The features of Archiva Premium are now included in Nota Bene Workstation, so they are available for all NB 14 users. With NB 14, we are introducing a new and improved version of Archiva — Archiva+. If you previously purchased Archiva Platinum, you will be able to continue to use those features, or you can purchase Archiva+ at an upgrade price. For more details, see Archiva Plus.
Q. Will I have to learn how to use Nota Bene all over again?
A. No. You should be able to adapt to NB 14 without missing a beat. This is especially true if you are moving from NB 10, 11, 11.5, 12, or 13 -- NB 14 simply builds on the new platform introduced in NB 10 by adding new conveniences and functions.
Q Will I be able to use my old files and databases with NB 14?
A. Yes. NB still uses the same file structure as did earlier versions of NB, even going back to NB1, so files written in any version of Nota Bene can be read by the latest version. The reverse, however, is not the case, since new versions introduce new elements not available in earlier versions, and these cannot be interpreted by earlier releases. That said, the only major change in NB 14's file structure has to do with tables, so files without new tables should be able to be read in earlier "10 series" (e.g., 10, 11, etc.) versions. As for Ibidem, NB 14 uses exactly the same structure for your database files, so you will have no problems using those databases in NB 14.
Q. Can version 14 be installed on my old computer that is running an earlier version of Nota Bene?
A. Yes. On Windows systems, version 14 can be installed on any 32-bit or 64-bit system (thus Windows 7 or higher, up to Windows 11). On the Mac, High Sierra (10.13) or higher up is required (all the way up to the latest release, Ventura). If those conditions are met, the program can be installed on a computer that is running earlier versions of NB, or it can be installed on a computer that has no previous version of Nota Bene installed.
Q. If I purchase an upgrade from earlier versions of Nota Bene to NB 14, do I have to have that earlier version installed on my computer?
A. No. Version 14 can be installed on a computer that has no previous version installed (do not install an earlier version first) or it can be installed on a computer that has an earlier version installed (do NOT uninstall the earlier version).
Q. I'm not sure what version of Nota Bene I have and/or I can't find my serial number.
A. If Nota Bene is installed on your computer, click Help, About Nota Bene and you will see the serial number and the version number. If you have your serial number, you can go to the order form on our web site and log in as a current customer to see your version number and the upgrades that are available to you. If you don't have your serial number, please write to customerservice@notabene.com and we will look it up for you.
Q. I am not a Nota Bene user, but would like to purchase now.
A. This is a great time to buy: Every day earlier you start using Nota Bene, you can save time and frustration, and start to build notes and references that you will be able to use for the rest of your career. To see the prices and/or place an order, go to our on-line order form.
Q. If I upgrade or purchase a new copy of Nota Bene, how long will it take for me to receive the software?
A. Just a few minutes! When you place your on-line order with a credit card, you will receive immediate access to the program via download.
Q. What is a product key?
A. Starting with NB 10, "product keys" have been required, along with serial numbers — both are required for installation. The product key gives you access to Nota Bene and also to any add-on programs that you have purchased.
Each version requires its own product key — when you order 14, you will be given a new product key (on the downloads page). Please make note of this, and be certain that you enter it during install. (If the product key shown when installing over an existing version [of NB 10, 11, 11.5, 12, or 13] differs from this new key, use this new one instead.)
Note also that if you subsequently purchase additional add-on modules after installing NB 14, you will get a new product key. The new add-on modules can be activated by clicking Help, Activate Add-On Modules and inserting the new product key. To get your product key, go to the following page and log in: Find Download.
Q. Do you have a trial edition of NB 14?
A. Yes. You can download the trial by clicking the red TRIAL button at the top of this page.
The NB 14 trial can be installed on a computer on which an earlier trial version of Nota Bene was installed. But it cannot be installed on a computer that has a full installation of an earlier version of Nota Bene (such as NB 10, 11, 11.5, 12, or 13).
