COMMENTS ON THE NEW ARCHIVA

“Wow! You’ve taken Nota Bene to new heights. . . . “The steady incremental improvements in Nota Bene over the years have of course been important; they have kept me a happy client. But with Archiva Platinum you have achieved a fantastic breakthrough. . . . Archiva now gives me a central place to which to keep track of my subject, right smack in the middle of my own word processor. . . . In short, I’m terrifically excited about the vistas (perhaps not the best word to use) Archiva opens up. Nota Bene has become a one-stop intellectual shopper, a scholar’s dream come true. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

“Thanks for working so hard on Archiva. I tell my friends and colleagues about it all the time. To my mind Archiva has simply become the best bibliographical search tool available, and its seamless integration with Ibidem has made it my newfound favourite part of Nota Bene.”
Shawn W.J. Keough
Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Faculty of Theology, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Belgium)
“Thanks for a stunning new product with the Archiva Platinum. . . . I think Nota Bene really is the ultimate academic computing resource, especially now that it has invaluable internet capacity. I cannot stop talking to colleagues and students about it and why they should purchase NB and Archiva. (Since starting this email I have had a conversation with a junior colleague who is convinced about purchasing NB and Archiva.)”
Dr. Chuck Wanamaker, University of Cape Town
“I’m enjoying using the new Archiva. It truly is amazing. . . . It’s quite a tool. I love the multiple library searches. And ISBN conversions -- what a great idea!”
Dr. David Rensberger, Atlanta
“Using Archiva with [an ISBN barcode] scanner has been pure pleasure and considerable fun. I’m already planning to catalogue my whole library this summer.”
Dr. Alan Segal, Barnard College
The ability of Archiva Platinum to convert bibliographies into Ibidem is alone worth the price. I had dreamed of a way to avoid having to input data from bibliographies I have kept for years or ones other people have sent me, and now Platinum does it in a few heartbeats. The retrieval abilities of the program already made it essential for research, but this is a wonderful added dimension.
Dr. Klyne Snodgras, North Park Theological Seminary
This is fantastic! I can see how this will be very useful for research.

So I ran into this grad student in Anthropology, who is taking a history seminar with a History colleague, who has not only adopted NB, but is also, similar to me, requiring her students to use it for her courses. So the grad student volunteers that she bought Archiva and we talk a bit, she’s enthusiastic about it, she has gone through her entire book collection and entered it into Ibidem.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
(All comments are from the first 24 hours after the release of the new Archiva) [February 26, 2009]
|
“That's quite an improvement to the earlier versions of Archiva. It’s late now here in Germany, but it’s tempting to go on playing with the update. Great job!”
“Kudos on the new Archiva! I’ve been playing with it all night, and am quite impressed. . . . Just as a heads-up, on Saturday, I’m giving a seminar to my fellow doctoral students on the benefits of NB over all other bibliographic and research software. I will make sure to show off the new Archiva. Again, congratulations on a job well-done.”
“Great job on keeping this up-to-date. What a great product. . . . I keep ‘selling’ the product up here; hopefully you keep having buyers from among those I ‘sell’ it to!
“The latest release of Archiva . . . looks incredible.”
Thank you. And what a difference with the new Archiva update!
I am so impressed, too, that you have included Saint Paul University Library in the Archiva sites. Fantastic!”
“Works like a charm. Love the convert isbn and formatted bibliography features.”

COMMENTS FROM BETA TESTERS OF THE NEW ARCHIVA
(mostly about the most innovative new feature in Archiva, Web Page Text Capture)
|
“I enter[ed] the URL of the Economist and others in the list for capture to Archiva: Other Sites. The prospect of using Archiva exclusively for this work, with the benefit of its integration with the rest of NB is a delight.”
“Installation: no problems in installing today's beta in a Dell desktop (XP SP2) or Lenovo Tablet PC.
Operations in Web News, etc.:
-- Capture of TNYT went well.
-- Capture of WSJ went fine (unlike before, the title of the article appears correctly in its field, as is the case with Author).
-- New option to "Combine w/ Previous Record; then Delete works well.
-- Capture of article content in Archiva: Other Sites went pretty well, considering that parsing is stated to be not fine-tuned as is the case with content from Web News. I used the example of an article in La Nacion, in Buenos Aires, Argentina and it's quite serviceable.”
“Just a quick note -- the ‘web capture’ feature seems to be working very well for NYTimes; also able to capture material from London Review of Books, British Medical Journal, LA Times, BBC News website, The Economist, The Spectator, but material from these sources requires more 'massaging', as you indicated it would. Potentially, a very useful tool.”
“The new version of Archiva seems to be a very good beginning indeed with some important features missing in [other programs].”
“As I recognized at the outset, Archiva performs the essential sterling service of capturing the text and creating a database record for use by NB tools. . . . The advantages of having the data in the integrated NB environment seem clear and overriding.”
