NB 12 Upgrade FAQ

Version 12 provides you with many additional features and improvements. This is a major upgrade, and we hope that the new conveniences will make your work easier and more efficient.

Q. What is new in version 12?

A. NB 12 adds a large number of both new features and simplified/enhanced existing features to the program, further improving NB for Windows and the Mac.

We keep on actively improving Nota Bene:
2018 -- New Features in NB 12, with screen shots
2016 -- New Features in NB 11.5, with screen shots
2015 -- New Features in NB 11, with screen shots
2014 -- New Features in NB 10, with screen shots

Q. How do I purchase the upgrade to NB 12?

A. To purchase, go to our on-line order form and log in as a current customer. When you log in, you will see which version you have and what price applies to your upgrade. (Or click here to see an overview of the pricing.)

When you upgrade, you will receive a full copy of the program that can be installed on a new computer (there is no need to install your old version first), or it can be installed on a computer that is already running an older version of Nota Bene.

Q. I have paid for NB 12 and need to download it again.

A. Your single-user license allows you to download the latest version of the most recently licensed program again and to install it on more than one computer (provided that it is just for your use). To download, or to get your product key, go to the following page and log in:
Find Download.

Q. Can I use Nota Bene on my Mac?

A. Yes, you can. Please see the following pages:
      NB on the Mac
      Mac FAQ
      Quotes from Mac users

Q. Does the upgrade purchase price include Lingua?

A. If you previously purchased Lingua, then Lingua will automatically be included in your upgrade. If you have not previously purchased Lingua, it is available for an additional $50. Similarly, Archiva and other add-ons are included if you previously purchased them and available for an additional charge if you have not previously purchased them.

Q. Will I have to learn how to use Nota Bene all over again?

A. No. You should be able to adapt to NB 12 without missing a beat. This is especially true if you are moving from NB 10, 11, or 11.5 -- NB 12 simply builds on the new platform introduced in NB 10 by adding new conveniences and functions.

But it is also easy to move from earlier versions of NB (9, or even 8, 7, 6, or 5): While the next-generation NB 10 / 11 /12 family sports a completely new interface, it uses all of the same NB commands, and includes the same menus and functions, as version 9. Some of the dialogs have been redesigned and repositioned. The command line (now called the 'action line') has been moved to the top of the screen, and some dialog bars now occupy the space on the right side of the screen--ideal for the new computers that now have wider screens. Ibidem works exactly the same way. The most significant changes have been made to Orbis, but the changes make the program more intuitive and easy to use. Overall, moving from NB 9 (or an earlier version) to NB 12 should be very easy.

Q Will I be able to use my old files and databases with NB 12?

A. Yes. While NB 10/11/11.5/12 has been completely rewritten, it uses the same file format as previous versions. Files written in earlier versions can be opened in NB 12, and files written in NB 12 can be opened in NB 12, NB11, NB 10, and even NB 9, or even, in many cases, in NB 5, 6, 7 or 8. (One possible major exception is that files that include graphics that utilize the new capabilities of NB 12 may not display properly in earlier versions, but regular text files should.) NB 12 uses exactly the same structure for your Ibidem databases as earlier versions, so you will have no problems using those databases in NB 12.

Q. Can version 12 be installed on my old computer that is running earlier versions (including, for example, NB 9)?

A. Yes. Version 12 can be installed on a 32-bit operating system or on a 64-bit operating system. They can be installed on a computer that is running earlier versions of NB, or they can be installed on a computer that has no previous version of Nota Bene installed.

Q. I'm not sure what version of Nota Bene I have and/or I can't find my serial number.

A. If Nota Bene is installed on your computer, click Help, About Nota Bene and you will see the serial number and the version number. If you have your serial number, you can go to the order form on our web site and log in as a current customer to see your version number and the upgrades that are available to you. If you don't have your serial number, please write to customerservice@notabene.com and we will look it up for you.

Q. I am not a Nota Bene user, but would like to purchase now.

A. This is a great time to buy: Every day earlier you start using Nota Bene, you can save time and frustration, and start to build notes and references that you will be able to use for the rest of your career. To see the prices and/or place an order, go to our on-line order form.

Q. If I upgrade or purchase a new copy of Nota Bene, how long will it take for me to receive the software?

A. Just a few minutes! When you place your on-line order with a credit card, you will receive immediate access to the program via download.

Q. I just got a new computer. How do I transfer my program, databases and files to the new computer?

A. Copy your NBWIN folder from the old computer to the new computer. Then install version 12 on the new computer. This process will bring any databases and files that are saved in NBWIN or its subfolders to your new computer. It will also transfer phrase libraries, templates, personal spelling dictionaries, customized keyboards and other customizations. For a detailed description, open NB Help (press F1 in either NB), and read the pages on "Backup" and "Transfer to New Computer" in the Backup and Sharing Files section.

Q. Can I use Archiva with version 12?

A. Yes. If you previously purchased Archiva Premium or Archiva Platinum, you will be able to use it with NB 12. If you do not have Archiva, you can purchase it now ($50 for Archiva Premium; $75 for Archiva Platinum). If you have Archiva Premium or an older version of Archiva, we offer upgrade pricing. If you are purchasing Nota Bene for the first time, you can add Archiva to your order using our main order form. To add Archiva to 12, please log in as a current customer. For more information about how Archiva can help you build an Ibidem database, see Archiva.

Q. What is a product key?

A. Starting with NB 10, "product keys" have been required, along with serial numbers -- both are required for installation. The product key gives you access to Nota Bene and also to any add-on programs that you have purchased.

Each version requires its own product key -- when you order 12, you will be given a new product key (on the downloads page). Please make note of this, and be certain that you enter it during install. (If the product key shown when installing over an existing version [of either NB 10 or NB 11 or NB 11.5] differs from this new key, use this new one instead.)

Note also that if you subsequently purchase additional add-on modules after installing NB 12, you will get a new product key. The new add-on modules can be activated by clicking Help, Activate Add-On Modules and inserting the new product key. To get your product key, go to the following page and log in: Find Download.

Q. Do you have a trial edition of NB 12?

A. Yes. You can download the trial at https://www.notabene.com/nbtrial.html.

The NB 12 trial can be installed on a computer on which an earlier trial version of Nota Bene was installed. But it cannot be installed on a computer that has a full installation of an earlier version of Nota Bene (such as NB 10 or NB 11.5).
