Text Search

A text search will search through the database for any text. The text does not need to be at the beginning of the field.

To do a text search, open the Ibidem database that you want to search and press Ctrl+T or click View, Search/Query Pane. Make sure that the Text radio button is selected at the top of the Search Pane.

The following options and settings are available:

Search Terms

Text entry boxes are available for you to enter your search terms. If you would like to search all of the fields in the database, enter your search terms in the All Fields box. The next boxes shown are the Search Groups that are defined for the database. For example, the Author search group includes three contributor fields as well as the Author field. A search in the Author search group would look for the name you enter in all of these fields. A search in the Title group would search look for the title you enter in multiple title fields. Below the horizontal line is a list of all of the fields that are defined in the database. The text search will find any text that is in the search group or field specified.  An asterisk can be used as a wildcard. For example, a search for Anders* in the author field would find authors Anders, Anderson, Andersen, etc. The drop down arrows to the right of the Author and Keyword fields can be used select one of the Authors or Keywords that is found in the database. Click to open the drop down list and then type the first letter or two of the name or keyword that you wish to enter. Using this feature helps to avoid misspelling.

Boolean Searches:

When your cursor is in one of the text entry boxes, a downward pointing arrow will appear at the left side of the field. Multiple search terms in the same field can be linked together with Boolean operators (and, or, etc.) by using this droplist. Enter the first term, then click to open the drop down list, and double-click to enter one of the terms in the dropdown list, then enter your second term. You can also use parentheses in your search string. The asterisk (*) can be used as a wildcard at the end of a word, but not at the beginning or in the middle. See Boolean Searches.
