Keys or Fast Search

The keys search (or fast search) provides a way of searching the key fields (or indexed fields) quickly. See Index Keys. The keys search searches only the listed key fields and it will find records only if the search terms that are entered match text that is at the beginning of the field or just after a semi-colon (a semi-colon is used to separate multiple entries in a field). For example, suppose that there are three records in the database with the word "Lewis" in the Author field:

Lewis, Mary
Smith, Robert; Lewis, Thomas
Jones, Lewis

The keys search would find the first and second of these records, but it would not find the third (in the third example, the first name of Lewis is not at the beginning of the field and is not after a semi-colon). A text search would find all three.

To do a keys search, open the Ibidem database that you want to search and press Ctrl+F or click View, Search/Query Pane. Make sure that the Keys radio button is selected at the top of the Search Pane.

The following options and settings are available:

Database or Subset to be searched

Click ENTIRE DATABASE to search the open database. If subsets have been defined for this database, they will be listed and you can click on one of the defined subsets to search that subset.

Search Terms

Text entry boxes for each of the Index Keys that are defined for the database are available. Enter your search terms in the appropriate place. An asterisk can be used as a wildcard. For example, a search for Anders* in the author field would find authors Anders, Anderson, Andersen, etc. The drop down arrows to the right of the Author and Keyword fields can be used select one of the Authors or Keywords that is found in the database. Click to open the drop down list and then type the first letter or two of the name or keyword that you wish to enter. Using this feature helps to avoid misspelling.
