To insert a predefined framework or outline structure in an open document:
| 1 | Click Format, Framework/Outline |
| 2 | If your cursor is not at the top of the document, the Framework Position dialog box will appear on your screen. Select the starting position for your framework, then click OK. For example, if you want your entire document to be formatted using the Framework, select Beginning of Document. If you want the framework to begin on the page you are working on, select Beginning of Current Page. |
| 3 | The Select Framework Library dialog will appear on your screen. In the top window, highlight the type of outline you want to insert. A sample of the highlighted outline structure will appear in the Preview window. At the bottom of the dialog you can choose whether you want to insert an Outline in your document or a framework that governs academic style manual headings or a framework that you have created yourself. |
| 4 | Click Insert to insert the framework structure with the first framework element (a framework element is a heading or a heading with associated body text). |
| 5 | After you insert the framework structure, the Framework/Outline Options dialog will open. Use this dialog to select which dialog bars you would like to have open. See Framework/Outline Defaults dialog. |
| 6 | Yellow and green framework brackets will appear on your screen. Type the heading between the yellow markers and type the body text between the green markers. Framework brackets can be turned on or off. See Framework Markers. |
| 7 | Use the Options Dialog bar on the left side of your screen (or the narrower toolbar) to work within your framework. If it is not already open, press Alt+O repeatedly to cycle through the Options Dialog Bar, the more narrow Toolbar and both closed. See Options Dialog Bar. |
To incorporate text that has already been written in a new framework structure, see Adding a Framework to an Existing File.
