A number of tools are available to help you work efficiently within a framework structure. Dialog bars on the left and right side of the screen can help you work within the framework structure. The Framework/Outline Defaults dialog allows you to choose which tools you would like to use. This dialog will appear when you first add a framework, an outline or an academic style to a document. It will not appear if you previously checked the box to skip this dialog in the future. It can always be opened by clicking Tools, Preferences, Framework/Outline or by clicking the Configure button at the top of the Options Bar, the Framework Toolbar, or the Navigation Bar.
Beginning with version 10 of Nota Bene, the framework/outline dialog bars have been designed to make efficient use of the wider screens that come with new computers. If you have a wide screen, we recommend that you keep the Options Bar open on the left side of your screen and the Navigation Bar open on the right side. If you find you don't have enough space for your document, you can close one or both of these dialogs or you can select the narrower toolbar on the left side.
The Framework/Outline Defaults dialog provides the following options:
Actions (on left):
| • | Click to check the Toolbar box to display a narrow bar of icons on the left side of your screen. |
| • | Click to check the Options box to display the wider Options Bar on the left side of your screen. This is the default setting and recommended for most users. |
| • | Click to check the Popup Action Tips if you would like to receive popup prompts about how to use Frameworks/Outlines. These prompts are transient, i.e. they will disappear when you click anything or press any key. |
| • | Press Alt+O repeatedly to cycle through the three options for the display on the left side of your screen (Toolbar, Options Bar or nothing). Click the Configure button to configure Alt+O for other options. |
| • | Click to check the Keep Bar Open in All Windows box if you would like to always have the bar selected above (the Toolbar or the Options Bar) open. If you select this option and are working on a file that does not have a framework, outline or academic style, the bar on the left will be visible, but it will not be active until a framework, outline or academic style is inserted. |
Outline (on right):
| • | Click to check the Navigation Bar box to display the navigation bar on the right side of your screen. This is the default setting and recommended for most users. However, if you find that you do not have enough room on your screen for the Options Bar on the left and the Navigation Bar on the right, you may want to open this only when needed. |
| • | The shortcut Alt+N can be used to open the Navigation Bar. |
| • | Click to check the Keep Bar Open in All Windows box if you would like to always have the Navigation bar open. If you select this option and are working on a file that does not have a framework, outline or academic style, the Navigation bar will be visible, but it will not be active until a framework, outline or academic style is inserted. |
Accept as Defaults and Skip Dialog in the Future: Click to check this box if you would like to use the same settings in the future. The dialog can be reopened from the Tools, Preferences menu.
Markers: Small yellow and green brackets are used to show the beginning and end of framework elements. Click the Markers button to turn these framework markers off or on.
The settings that you select in this dialog will be used as your default settings for any files that use a framework, outline or academic style.
