Hyphens and Dashes

 

There are several kinds of hyphens and dashes.

 

Regular Hyphen is a punctuation mark that is used to join words or parts of words (-).
Soft Hyphen is a hyphen used to show where to hyphenate a long word; it displays only if the word is actually hyphenated.
Non-Breakable Hyphen is a hyphen that will not break at the end of a line, but will assure that the hyphenated word is always on one line
En Dash is a dash that is longer than a hyphen (–).
Em Dash is a dash that is longer than an en dash (—).

 

A regular hyphen is inserted by pressing the hyphen key at the top right of the keyboard.

 

There are several ways to insert the other hyphens and dashes.

 

 

F5 and Other Keyboard Shortcuts

 

The following shortcuts can be used to insert hyphens and dashes:

 

To insert a soft hyphen, press Ctrl and the hyphen key
To insert a non-breakable hyphen, press F5 followed by the hyphen key
To insert an en dash: press F5, followed by Shift+N
To insert an em dash: press F5, followed by Shift+M or press the hyphen key twice.

 

Menu

 

The Insert menu can be used to insert a hyphen or dash.

 

To insert a soft hyphen, click Insert, Other Breaks, Soft Hyphen.
To insert any hyphen or dash, click Insert, Advanced Break Options. On the Words tab of the Breaks dialog, click to check the Hyphens/Dashes box and then select the hyphen or dash to be inserted.

 

The Compose Key (F6)

 

(This method is available only if you have the Lingua module)

 

The compose key can be used to transform a regular hyphen into your choice of several hyphens or dashes of varying lengths.

 

1Type ­a regular hyphen and then press F6
2The F6 pop-up screen will appear showing the dashes that can be entered using this method. Use one of the following methods to transform the hyphen that you typed in step 2 into the dash that you select.
Type the number or letter shown in the small yellow square in the square that contains the character you want to enter.  
Double click the square that contains the character you want to enter.
Click the square that contains the character you want to enter and then press Enter.

 

If you remember the number or letter in the small yellow square, and want to enter the same dash again, it can be typed after pressing F6 before the F6 pop-up screen appears.

 

Leaders

 

A leader is a line of dots, hyphens, dashes or blank space that separates text that is flush left from text that is flush right.. If you want to insert a leader, see Leader or Leader: keyboard shortcut or Leader: ld command.
