Leader: keyboard shortcut

A leader is a series of dots, dashes or other text that continues from the point of insertion on the same line until a number or other text is inserted flush right.

A leader can be inserted by pressing Shift+Tab.  The message "Type character to be used for leader" will appear on the status line.  Type the the character you want to use.  For example, press Shift+Tab and then . (period) to insert a line of dots.  Note that you must release the Shift+Tab before typing the character that you want to use for a leader. Any character can be used as a leader, but space, dot and hyphen are most commonly used. In addition, the following keys have special uses when used after pressing Shift+Tab:

n or N     En dash, used to create a solid line
m or M     Em dash, used to create a solid line (An em dash is longer than an en dash, but either one used as a leader will create a solid line.)
2     large solid dot
4     ¤
8     small dot at the level of a dash. The leader will be the same as a leader that uses the period, except that the line of dots will be in the middle of the line, at the level of a dash.

Note that these keys are the same as those used after F5 to insert these characters, except that they are unshifted.
