Edit User Dictionary

You may want to add words to the dictionary. For example, technical terms or proper names that you use may not be in the dictionary, but they can be added to the primary user dictionary (or to any SPL user dictionaries).

Words can be added to the dictionary designated as the Primary User Dictionary in any of the following ways:

If a correctly spelled word is marked as misspelled, you can right-click on the word and then choose Add to Dictionary. See Auto Spell Check.

If you run the spell checker (Proof, Spell File/Block) and the speller finds a misspelled word, you will be given the option to always ignore the word by clicking Always [>Dict]. The word will then be added to the Primary User Dictionary. See Spell File/Block.

The Spell Utility dialog bar (Alt+U) can be used to move through a document and review words that should be added to the Primary User Dictionary. See Spell Utility Dialog Bar.

The Primary User Dictionary (or any of the SPL dictionaries), can be opened from your Nbwin\Users\Default folder and edited directly. One word (or one replacement pair) should be on each line. The order does not matter. However, if you wish, you can use Nota Bene's sort function to alphabetize the list. See Sorting Lines/Paragraphs.

Finally, you can add or delete words by using the Edit User Dictionary dialog as follows.

1Click Proof, Edit User Dictionary.
2The Edit User Dictionary dialog will display with a list of the available user dictionaries. The dictionaries with check marks are active. The one with an asterisk is the primary user dictionary (the one to which words would be added as described above). Unless you have made changes, you will see that "general.spl" is the primary user dictionary (it has an asterisk), it is active (it has a check mark), and it is be highlighted. To edit this dictionary, click Edit Dictionary. To edit a different dictionary, click to highlight the dictionary you want to edit, and then click Edit Dictionary.
3The Edit User Dictionary dialog will display with the name of the user dictionary being edited at the top. Click the Corrected Words/Overrides tab. You will see a list of all of the words in the user dictionary on the left and a list of any overrides on the right (an override is a word that you want to "delete" from the main dictionary. You cannot actually delete words from the main dictionary, but by adding the word as an override in the user dictionary, the speller will ignore the fact that the word is in the main dictionary. The spell checker will then treat the override word as a misspelled word.

To add a word, type (or copy/paste) it in to the Corrected Words box and click Add.

To add an override, type (or copy/paste) it in to Override in Main Dictionary box and click Add.

To delete a word, find it in the list of words, click to highlight it and then click Delete.

4Click Save to save changes to the user dictionary, and click Close to close the open dialog.

The user dictionaries contain replacement pairs in addition to individual words. Replacement pairs can also be added or deleted. See Customizing Auto Replace.

The Edit User Dictionary dialog can be used to edit any user dictionary. If you want to change which dictionaries are active or which dictionary is the primary user dictionary, see Configure: Dictionary Tab.
