Spell Utility Dialog Bar (Alt+U)

The Spell tab on the Utility Dialog Bar is used to add words or replacement pairs to your primary user dictionary. Normally if you want to add one flagged word to your dictionary as you are working, it is easiest to use the right click menu (right-click on a flagged word and select Correct Word) or Ctrl+? (with the cursor on a questionable word, press Ctrl+?). The Spell Utility Dialog Bar is useful for systematically going through a document to review flagged words, or for use with a List of Unrecognized Words. Once opened, the Spell Utility Dialog Bar will remain open on the right side of your screen.

To add a word to your user dictionary:

1Place your cursor on the word you wish to add.
2If it is not already open, press Alt+U to open the Spell Utility Dialog Bar. If necessary, press Alt+U again to activate the Spell tab (or click on the Spell tab).
3Make sure that the word that you want to add is showing in the white box at the top and that the radio button for "Permanently (to user dictionary)" is selected.
4 Click Alt+0 (using the number zero, not the letter O) to add the word to your user dictionary. It will be added to the Primary User Dictionary.

A replacement pair is 2 words: the first one is a misspelled word and the second is the correctly spelled word that you would always want to replace the first word. For example, "recieve receive" is a replacement pair that is already in the dictionary. To add a replacement pair to your user dictionary:

1Place your cursor on the misspelled word.
2If it is not already open, press Alt+U to open the Spell Utility Dialog Bar. If necessary, press Alt+U again to activate the Spell tab (or click on the Spell tab).
3Make sure that the misspelled word is showing in the white box at the top and that the radio button for "Permanently (to user dictionary)" is selected.
4 Double-click on the correctly spelled word to add the replacement pair to the primary user dictionary. If the correctly spelled word is one of the first nine words listed, you can press Alt+the number (1 through 9) corresponding to the correctly spelled word.

Update Delay determines the timing of how long you have to be on a misspelled word before it updates the list. If you are in full I-want-to-correct-all-misspellings-now mode, you might want that to be virtually instantaneous. But if you are generally just writing, and want simplified spelling assist, you might not want it to do that as you simply move the cursor around in the text, but instead wait until you pause.
