The second tab of the Reference Style for Current Document dialog is used to select the publishing style for the citations in your document. If changes are made to this dialog, they will not be reflected in your document until you update the dynamic citations in the document. See Updating Citations.
The following options are available:
Format
Select the radio button for the type of in-text citation style you would like to write in your document: Footnote/Endnote or Short Form or Reference Number. Note that this dialog is not used to differentiate between footnotes and endnotes (footnotes are converted to endnotes by using the Note Format dialog in the main Nota Bene word processor).
When you choose a type of in-text citation, the options for that particular type of in-text citation display.
Footnote/Endnote Options
When the option for Footnote/Endnote is checked, the following settings are available on the In-Text Citation dialog.
| The style list box provides you with a list of the available styles for formatting footnotes/endnotes. Scroll down and click to choose the style, or begin typing the name of the style you want and the cursor will move to it. |
| You can define the characters that separate multiple cites in a single footnote/endnote as a semi-colon, comma, space, new line, period, semi-colon+space, comma+space, or period+space. |
| Delimiters Around Citation |
| You can define the your in-text cite from the surrounding text as parentheses, square bracket, angle brackets, curly braces, or none. For footnotes and endnotes, this should ordinarily be set to None. |
| Use Shortened Form for Subsequent Cites |
| Check this option to use a shortened title in subsequent cites of the same work. |
| Check this option to use Ibid. in your footnotes/endnotes. Note that Ibid. and Op. cit. will work only if you are entering citations directly from Ibidem, not if you first create a footnote window. The footnote window is designed to be used if you are writing your own text with or without a citation. |
| Check this option to use op. cit. in your footnotes/endnotes. |
| Check this option to include the contents of the annotation field in your in-text citations. |
| Note Series for Citation Footnotes |
| Check the appropriate radio button for the note series you have used in your document for your in-text citations. |
Short Form Citation Options
When the option for Short Form is checked, the following settings are available on the In-Text Citation dialog:
| | Use the drop list next to the Short Form radio button to select "by Name" or "by Pattern." Depending on your selection, the style list box will will list either names of publishing styles or examples showing the pattern. |
| The style list box provides you with a list of the available styles. Scroll down and click to choose the style. If "by Name" is active, you can begin typing the name of the style you want and the cursor will move to it. |

| You can define the your in-text cite from the surrounding text as parentheses, square bracket, angle brackets, curly braces, or none. |
| Use Shortened Form for Subsequent Cites |
| Check this option to use a shortened title in subsequent cites of the same work. The shortened title that will be used is the one you have entered in the "Subsequent Cite Title" field in your Ibidem database. |
| Choose the phrase to use to indicate there are authors in addition to those listed in the citation who contributed to the work. Each publishing style has a default for this phrase; use the radio buttons to override the default set in the style definition. |
| Number of Authors Before "et al." |
| Publishing styles have settings for the number of authors to be named in the record, and for the number of authors after which the phrase "et al." or "and others" will be used. To change the publishing style setting for the First Citation, and Subsequent Citations, use the arrow buttons to increase or decrease the number of authors that can occur in a record without using et al. |
| Number of Author Names to Print |
| Use the arrow keys to indicate how many author names to print when "et al." or "and others" is used in the citation. |
Reference Number Options
When the option for Reference Number is checked, the following settings are available on the In-Text Citation dialog
| The style list box provides you with choices for the style to use for the numbers in the text of your document. Click to choose the Style. |
| You can define the characters that separate multiple numbered references as a semi-colon, comma, space, new line, period, semi-colon+space, comma+space, or period+space. |
| Delimiters Around Citation |
| You can define the the numbered reference from the surrounding text as parentheses, square bracket, angle brackets, curly braces, or none. |
Save as Default
Check this option to save the current settings as the default settings future documents.
Write List to File
Click this button to copy the list that is visible in the style list box to a new untitled Nota Bene file. The file can then be saved or printed.
