Saving a File

The first time a document is saved, a name and location (drive and folder) must be specified. Subsequently, the document can be saved to the same name and location and/or to a new name and location.

To save an untitled document:

1Click File, Save (or press Ctrl+S or click the Save button on the toolbar). The Save As dialog will appear on your screen.
2Select the location (drive, folder, subfolder) in which you want to save the document. You can browse through the drives, folders and subfolders on the left side of the dialog. The display can be expanded or contracted by clicking the icon immediately to the left of the name of the folder. The currently selected subfolder will be shown at the top of the dialog. You can also use this line at the top of the dialog to select a different folder or subfolder. Click the small triangular arrows to open subfolders under any folder and click to select a new subfolder.
3Choose a name for the file and type it in the File Name box at the bottom of the dialog. Do not type an extension. The .NB extension will be added automatically.
4The Save As Type box should read "Nota Bene for Windows (*.nb)". If you want to save to a different format, see Convert to Other Formats.
5Click OK. Nota Bene will save the file and leave it on screen so that you can continue editing. The file you are working in is the only one saved.

To save a document that has previously been saved:

After editing an open document, it can be saved to the same location and file name by clicking File, Save (or press Ctrl+S or click the Save button on the toolbar). The previously saved version of the document will be overwritten with the new version and the document will remain on screen.

Save As PDF

To save a displayed and named document as a PDF file, click File, File Options, Save As PDF. The file will be saved with the same name (but with a .PDF extension) in the same folder and the new PDF file will be opened. If you would like to save a file in PDF format using a different name or a different folder, use the Save As dialog as described below.

Save As

To save a displayed and named document to a new drive, path and/or filename, click File, Save As and complete the Save As dialog as described above. When you click Save, the file is saved in the location you specified with the name you specified. The file with the new location and/or name remains open for editing. If you would prefer to save to a new location and/or name, but keep the file with the old location/name open for editing, you should click the small triangular arrow on the Save button and click Save As Copy.

Save As can also be used to save a document to another format such as PDF or RTF. Use the Save As Type box at the bottom of the Save As dialog to select the format. Choose PDF if you would like to convert your Nota Bene document to PDF format. Choose RTF if you would like to convert your Nota Bene document to RTF so that it can be opened in Word or another word processor. Choose RTF Custom if you are using Greek or Hebrew in your file and would like to see options for the fonts to be used in the RTF file. Otherwise, choose RTF Default. When you save your Nota Bene file in PDF or RTF format, the Nota Bene file is retained and a new file is created with a .pdf or .rtf extension.

Save All

To save all open files, click File, Save All or press Ctrl+Shift+S.

For information on using the action line to save a document, see SA Command.

NB:

The columns in the Save As dialog box can be sorted by clicking on the headings (Name, Size, Type, or Date Modified).
The Save As dialog can be used to replace any existing files. Once you have located the file you want to replace, highlight it by clicking the left mouse button. The name will appear in the File name box. Click OK to replace the stored file with the open file. Nota Bene will display the warning message "This file exists. Are you sure you want to replace it?" Click Yes to accept or No to select a new file name.
You can choose if you want to receive warning messages by setting preferences. Click Tools, Preferences, then select Command Prompts and click Set to access the Command Prompt Defaults dialog. Make the appropriate choices and click OK.
Your file can be saved in file format other than Nota Bene for Windows. Select the format in the Save as type box.
