New Standard Document Dialog

The New Standard Document dialog can be used to create a new blank file or a new file based on an Academic Style or other template. This dialog can be used to create a new named file, specifying the folder in which the file will be stored as well as the file name. Or you can leave the file unnamed and name it when you first save it.

1Open the New Standard Document dialog in one of the following ways.
Click File, New
Click the New File button on the File toolbar
Click the New File tab. The New File tab is is the tab that is farthest to the right in the group of tabs that are above the file that is displayed on your screen. It has the New File icon on it, similar to the New button.
If the above methods do not open the New Standard Document Dialog, you will be able to open it by clicking File, File Options, New--All Options. See the note about showing/skipping this dialog at the bottom of this page.
2To base your new document on an academic style, click on the icon for the style you want to use on the Academic Papers tab (scroll down if necessary).
3To base your new document on a template, click on the tab and the template you want to use. See Using Templates.
4To create a named file, type a name into the Filename field. The .NB extension will be added automatically. Review the path specified in the Folder field. If you want to make changes, you can type in the new folder or you can click the button to the right of the Folder box and browse to the folder of your choice. When you are finished, the full path should be in the Folder box.
5Click OK.

The academic style manuals can be shown as either images of the style manual covers or as a list of the available options. Use the two multi-colored buttons at the bottom right of the dialog to select your preference.

If you would like to create a new template, click the Template radio button. See Using Templates.

Show or skip this dialog: If you normally start with a blank document rather than one that is based on an academic style or other template, you can skip the new Standard Document Dialog. Just click to clear the "Always Show this Dialog" box at the bottom right of the dialog. When this box is cleared (no check mark showing), any of the first 3 methods mentioned in step 1 above will open a new blank, untitled file without first going to the New Standard Document dialog. You will be able to access the New Standard Document Dialog by clicking File, File Options, New--All Options.
