Header/Footer Window

The header/footer window is used for entering text, formatting text, and adding page numbers or other data that will be included in a header or footer. This window is accessed from the Headers and Footers Dialog on the Format menu or by clicking a header or footer that is already in place.

The main header/footer window has an editing window at the top, and two, four or six images of headers and footers ("thumbnails") below the editing window. Click on the header or footer thumbnail that you want to edit to select it. Then use the edit window at the top to edit. Click at the left, center or right of the edit window to enter text that is flush left, centered, or flush right. Text can be formatted as you would format text on the main screen. When the header/footer edit window is active, any of the menu dialogs, keyboard shortcuts or toolbar buttons can be used to change font, font size, mode (italics, bold, etc.) or to add any formatting to the header or footer. You can also highlight text in the header/footer window and right-click to open a right-click menu that can be used for formatting.

There are five buttons at the top of the header/footer edit window that are used for inserting page number, date/time, author, file name or folder/file name. To use these buttons, place your cursor at the point in the window where you want to insert the information, then click the button as follows:

Page number: Page numbers are typically entered before this window is opened through the header/footer dialog. However, they may also be entered directly from the header/footer window. This button can also be used to make changes to a page number that is already present in a header or footer. For example, you could choose to use letters or roman numerals, or a format that includes text and/or punctuation (for example "page 2 of 6"). Click this button to open the Page Numbers dialog. For details on the use of this dialog, see Page Numbers dialog.
Date and time: Press this button to enter the date and/or time. The Date and Time dialog will appear. For details on the use of this dialog, see Date and Time dialog.
Author: Press the Author button to insert your name. This information is taken from the Author tab of the Academic Style Manual dialog. Make sure that your name is properly filled in in this dialog by clicking Format, Style Manual and then click the Author tab on the right side of the dialog.
Filename: There are two filename buttons: Folder+filename and Filename. Press the Filename button to enter the name of the file. Press the Folder+Filename button to enter the filename with the full path.
