Headers and Footers Dialog

The Headers and Footers dialog is used to create headers and footers in your document.

To create a simple header and/or footer with page numbering on each page and no text:

1Click Format, Headers and Footers, Insert Headers and/or Footers to open the Headers and Footers dialog.
2If you are satisfied with the placement of the numbers as indicated in one of the top two options, then select one of those two options. If you only want page numbering with no text, make sure that the "Open Header/Footer to Edit" box at the bottom of the dialog is unchecked, and click OK.

To create headers and/or footers with numbers and text that are customized to your specifications:

1Click Format, Headers and Footers, Insert Headers and/or Footers to open the Headers and Footers dialog.
2Click on one of the five radio buttons in the middle section of the dialog to specify whether all pages should have the same header, or different headers for initial page and/or odd/even pages. Notice the changes that take place in the lower part of the dialog when you click different radio buttons. Use the Other Format radio button if you want to insert only a header or only a footer and click either (or both) of the boxes for Header or for Footer, then use the drop down list to indicate whether you want all pages, even pages or odd pages.
3The bottom of the Headers and Footers dialog has one, two or three yellow panels, representing pages. Use these panels to select the placement of page numbering in the headers and footers. Each panel will have one of the following labels: All Pages, Initial Page, Remaining Pages, Even Pages, Odd Pages. Each panel has rectangular drop down list at the top representing a header and a rectangular drop down list at the bottom representing a footer. Click the down arrows to select the position of the number in the header or footer (left, center or right) or to select "no page #." The "# of #" options will specify the current page and the total number of pages in the document (e.g., "6 of 32")
4If you want to add text or data (e.g., date, author or filename) to any of your headers and/or footers, the box at the bottom that says "Open Header/Footer to Edit" should be checked. If this box is checked, the Header/Footer Window will open when you click OK.
5Continue creating your headers and footers by using the Header/Footer Window.

Once a header or a footer has been created, you will be able to click on it at any time to edit it. When a footer is created, a blank header is also created (and vice versa). If you do not need to change the header/footer options that specify which headers/footer appear on which pages (e.g., all pages have the same header/footer, or odd and even pages have different headers/footers), then the easiest way to edit a header or a footer is to click on the header or the footer. If you do need to change the header/footer options that specify which headers/footer appear on which pages, see Editing Headers/Footers.

If you attempt to open the Headers and Footers dialog on the same page where headers and/or a footers are already defined, you will be given the option to change your selection of the radio buttons that specify whether all pages should have the same header, or different headers for initial page and/or odd/even pages. You will also be given the following options:

Edit: If you do not want to select a different radio button in the second part of the dialog, click Edit to make changes to the existing headers and footers.
Replace: If you want to choose a different radio button in the second part of the dialog, make your selection and then click Replace. This will delete the existing headers and footers and replace them with new ones.
Modify: If you want to choose a different radio button in the second part of the dialog, make your selection and then click Modify. This will enable you to add new headers and footers that may retain some of the text or numbers that were in the previous headers/footers.
Delete: Click Delete to delete the headers and footers that are on the current page.

If you attempt to open the Headers and Footers dialog on a page that is after the page where headers and/or a footers have been defined, the Headers and Footers dialog will open and you will be able to insert new headers and/or footers starting on that page. See Changing Headers/Footers.
