Page Numbers Dialog

The Page Numbers dialog is used to select the punctuation and/or text to appear with the page number. Nota Bene gives you a variety of predefined choices as well as the ability to customize the punctuation and/or text used. Final page numbers and chapter numbers can be used (e.g., "page 3 of 8" or "page VI-21"). If you want to use chapter numbers, chapter number counters must be inserted in the document (see Numbering Chapters).

The Page Numbers dialog is accessible from the Headers and Footers dialog or from the Header/Footer window. In order to place page numbers on every page, they must be entered as part of a header or footer.

Complete the options presented in this dialog are as follows:

1Select left, center or right to indicate the position of the number in the header or footer.
2Check one or more of the three boxes in this dialog to indicate whether you want to include the current page number, the final page number and/or the chapter number. You can check more than one of these boxes and the options in the bottom half of the dialog will change depending on your selection.
3In the bottom half of the dialog, click on the format you would like to use. As indicated in the dialog, the following symbols are used:
Current page number:  #
Final page number:  ##
Chapter number:  @
4If you are not satisfied with the options presented, you can type your own text or punctuation in the white box in the middle of the dialog. Use the symbols specified in the dialog (# for page number, ## for final page number and @ for chapter number). For example, if you want the page number text read "Page 2 (total pages: 26)" (with the program automatically updating the page numbers), you would type "Page # (total pages: ##)" (without the quotes). This feature allows you to specify virtually any format.
5If you would like to change the starting page number, or the format of page numbers, click the Set button. Upper case roman numberals, lower case roman numerals, upper case letters, or lower case letters can be used instead of decimal numbers. When you click the Set button, you will be prompted to save the open header/footer window, after which the Set Page Numbers dialog will open.
