Field Definitions

The fields listed below are used in the Ibidem bibliographic databases. The program uses a two character abbreviation to identify each field, such as AU for the author field, YR for the year field, PR or the publisher field, etc. Data must be entered in the proper field so that the program will process the data properly in generating your in-text citations, reference lists and bibliographies. In entering data, you generally will not be presented with all of the following options, because the process of selecting a data entry template will provide you with only the fields that you need. For example, if you select one of the templates for a book, the BT (Book/Long Work Title) field will be available, but the ST (Short Work) field will not be available. For more information, see Data Entry Overview or New Record or Customize Fields.

You can view the fields on the main Ibidem screen in the Database Pane as either full descriptions or as 2-character IDs. Drag the border between the fields and the entry boxes to the left to see the fields as 2-character abbreviations, or drag it to the right to see the full field descriptions. Alternatively, you can use the View menu at the top of the Ibidem screen to change the display to show full descriptions or 2 character IDs.

Information about each field is easily available from the main Ibidem screen. If Auto FieldTips is on, you will see a small FieldTip screen as soon as you move your cursor to any field. If Auto FieldTips is not on, move your cursor to any field and press Ctrl+F1 to display the FieldTip for that field. Click Tools, Auto FieldTips to turn Auto FieldTips on or off. For more information, see FieldTips. You can also place your cursor in any field and press Alt+H to open Field Help for that field
