Title

Title is one of the seven Field Types available in Ibidem. Data entered in fields that are identified as Title fields should be entered according to the following guidelines.

Entering titles in your records

Capitalize the first word of a title and any proper names, but do not capitalize significant words in the title:

When you enter citations in a document, or generate a bibliography, Ibidem will capitalize significant words in titles, or the first term following a colon, as required by the publishing style selected. Auto casing only comes into play when the records are cited in a file; it does not affect the entry in the database. The way records appear in a document depends on which publishing style has been selected.

Foreign language titles

A title that is not in English should be entered following the capitalization rules of that particular language. In addition, a case-as-typed marker must be inserted in the field to indicate that the program's capitalization rules should be overridden and any citations and bibliographies generated should reflect the capitalization as typed. To enter this marker, click Edit, Case as Typed (or press Shift+Alt+F1, or right-click the field and select Case as Typed). A green case marker will be inserted into the field. To reactivate program capitalization, delete the green case marker, or click Edit, Allow Auto Casing (or press Alt+F1, or right-click the field and select Allow Auto Casing). Note that if the rules of the selected style don't require auto casing, entering the case-as-typed marker in the field will have no effect.

Title translations

If you choose to include a translation of the title in the record, enter it in square brackets:

Titles within titles

Enclose the title of any short work named in another short work title in double quotes, even if you are used to using single quotes. Ibidem will make the necessary conversions:

If there is an error on the title page, enter the title in its incorrect form, as follows:
