Configure: Options Tab

Click Proof, Configure Spell to open the Spell Configure dialog. The Options Tab is the first tab. It provides the following options.

Auto Spell Mode: If the Auto Spell Mode box is checked, words that are not recognized will be shown underlined with the traditional red squiggle or as having a yellow background. These visual spelling indicators can be turned on/off by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Y. If using the red squiggles, doubled words that are not separated by punctuation (or by a new line, a tab, etc.) are shown with green squiggles marking the second word. If yellow background is selected, the same yellow background will be used to mark doubled words.

Enable Spelling of Ibidem Active Field as Default: If this box is checked, words in the active Ibidem field that are not recognized will be marked with the red squiggle or the yellow background (whichever is indicated). If it is not checked, there is no visual marking of misspelled words in Ibidem. In either case, the marking of misspelled words in the active Ibidem field can be turned on/off by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Y. Pressing Ctrl+Shift+Y when Ibidem is active affects the display of spelling errors in Ibidem only, not in Nota Bene word processor. Ibidem fields typically contain proper nouns which are not in the spelling dictionary. For this reason, many people prefer to have this box unchecked, and to use Ctrl+Shift+Y if/when spell checking in an Ibidem field is desired.

Ignore Words With Numbers: If this box is checked, the speller will skip (i.e., not check) words that contain numbers.

Ignore URL's and File Names: If this box is checked, the speller will skip URL's (strings that begin with "www" or "http") and file names (strings that begin with a drive designation and a colon). Note that a back slash alone [starting with a folder name) is not treated as an indicator of a file name.

Auto Replace (Pairs) When Using Proof, Spell If this box is checked, then when you click Proof, Spell File/Block, the speller will automatically correct spelling for words for which the dictionary contains a replacement pair. This applies to all replacement pairs, including auto expand pairs. See Auto Expand. This box should be unchecked if you want the program to pause on replacement pairs and checked if you want the replacement to be made automatically. This option applies to spell checking using Proof, Spell only; it does not apply to visual spell checking.

Auto Correct Case As You Type: If this box is checked, the case of words in which only the first two letters are capitalized would be changed, thus automatically compensating for the frequent failure to release the Shift key after typing the first letter of a sentence. For example, when this option is selected, "WHen" would be changed to "When."

Auto Replace (Pairs) As You Type: If this box is checked, Auto Replace Only is turned on. See Auto Replace Only.

Auto Check and Replace (Pairs) As You Type: If this box is checked, Auto Check and Replace is turned on. See Auto Check and Replace.

Spell Beeps: If the Spell Beep boxes are checked, you will hear a beep (a) when an error is detected while typing (but only if Auto Check & Replace is on) and (b) when an auto replacement is made. You  can choose what sound will be used by selecting from a list of .WAV files. Double-click to hear the sound. Click once to highlight the .WAV file you would like to use.

Main Dictionary: The setting "Auto Based on Language" will switch dictionaries based on the LA codes in the document. See Configure: Dictionary Tab. Choosing any language will suppress or override multilingual spelling so that all spell checking is done in the language specified even if the document contains other languages with LA codes.
