Customizing a Style Manual

If the preconfigured style manuals do not meet your needs, you can create customized style manuals. This is done by starting with an existing stye manual, and changing framework settings (heading levels and format, margins, spacing, etc.), footnote and/or endnote format, and bibliographic style. Once the changes are made, the style is given a new name. Like any style manual, the new style manual can be inserted in a new blank document, or it can be applied to a document that was written using a different academic style manual. The new style manual can be transferred to another computer or shared with another Nota Bene user. See Sharing a Customized Style Manual.

To create a customized style manual:

1With a blank document open, apply any Academic Style Manual (or one already customized). See Inserting an Academic Style. Do not add any document-specific information, such as title, author info, etc. It does not matter how you answer the prompt about an initial heading when applying the style (this question will always be asked, for any use of the style).
2Click Format, Framework/Outline, Edit and edit the framework structure. See Customizing a Framework.
3Click Format, Notes, Series 1. Use the Note Format dialog to edit the notes. You can choose either footnotes or endnotes, and edit any note parameters.
4Click Format, Bibliographic References, Set Reference Style and select the bibliographic format on the second and third tabs. See Set Reference Style.
5Once the format is as desired, click Format, Style Manual, and click Save as New. Type in a short name, and a description, and click OK
6Click Format, Style Manual. You should see the style manual that you have created as one of the options. After you return to Format, Style Manual once, the new customized style manual will appear in the File, New dialog as well as the Format, Style Manual dialog.

These styles differ from the predefined styles in a few ways:

A separate style must be defined for each desired Document Type (Style Manual dialog, General  tab, top panel).

Changing the selection in that panel will only change the name, not the structure.

Heading levels and note format also cannot be changed from this dialog. Both of these settings are simply picked up from what is defined in the style.

If you need a style with different heading and note options, create another style.

To update an existing customized style:.

1With a blank document open, apply the customized style as described in step 1 above.
2Make any desired edits as described in steps 2, 3 and 4 above.
3Click Format, Style Manual, and click Update Style.

To delete a style:

1With a blank document open, apply the customized style as described in step 1 above.
2Click Format, Style Manual, and click Delete Style.
