Copying or Moving Files

To copy a file, you can either use Windows Explorer to copy or move a file that is not currently open or you can save an open file to a new location using the Save As dialog. To use the Save As dialog see Saving a File.  If you are copying a file for use on a different computer, and if that file includes citations that have been generated by Ibidem, then you will have to make sure that the Ibidem database that was used to generate the citations is accessible to the new computer. See Sharing a File.

To use Windows Explorer to copy a file:

1Open Windows Explorer in one of the following ways:
Right-click the Windows Start button at the bottom left corner of your screen, then click click File Explorer or Explore or Open Windows Explorer (the terminology varies depending on which version of Windows you are using).
Press Windows+E (the Windows button on your keyboard and the E key).
If File Explorer is already open, click the Exploring icon on your Windows taskbar or hold down the Alt key while you repeatedly press the Tab key to scroll through open programs to Explorer.
2Use File Explorer to find the file to be copied. Click once on the file name to highlight it. For instructions on how use Windows Explorer to find a file, see Displaying Folders and Files or Finding a File.
3Press Ctrl+C to copy the file to the clipboard.
4Use File Explorer to find and click on the drive and/or folder to which you want to copy the file.
5When the destination drive or folder is highlighted, press Ctrl+V to paste the file to the new location.

To use File Explorer to move a file (i.e., to delete it from its old location and move it to a new location), follow the above instructions, but substitute Ctrl+X for Ctrl+C in step 3.

To copy two or more files at the same time, use the Ctrl or Shift button to highlight more than one file in step 2 as follows:

Click to highlight the first file, then hold down the Ctrl button while you click other files to be copied. All files should be highlighted.
To highlight a contiguous group of files, click to highlight the first file, and then hold the Shift button down while you use the up or down arrow on your keyboard to highlight the rest of the files that you want to copy or move.

The same procedure can be used to copy or move a folder instead of a file. In step 2, click on the folder to highlight it.

To move a file (or files or a folder), use Ctrl+X in step 3 instead of Ctrl+C. This will delete the selected files (or folders) from the original location and copy them to the clipboard so that they can be pasted in the new location in step 5.

File Explorer is a Windows program and it contains its own on-line help. For more information on using File Explorer to copy files and folders, click Help, Help Topics on the Explorer menu. Then click the Index tab and type in "copying files" to search for this topic. When the topic you want to see is highlighted, click Display.

The action line can also be used to copy or move files. See COPY command.
