Managing Files from Open File Dialog

Files can be deleted, renamed, copied or moved directly from the Open File dialog or from the Save As dialog. Folders can be deleted and new folders can be created.

Windows Explorer can also be used for these functions, and Windows Explorer also gives you many more options for managing files and folders. See Managing Files from Windows Explorer.

To rename a file:

1If the file is open, close it.
2Open the Open File dialog (press Ctrl+O or click File, Open) and browse to the file that you want to rename.
3Right-click on the filename and click (left-click) on Rename.
4Type the new name in the space provided and then press Enter.

To delete a file:

1If the file is open, close it.
2Open the Open File dialog (press Ctrl+O or click File, Open) and browse to the file that you want to rename.
3Press Delete or right-click on the filename and click (left-click) on Delete.
4When prompted, click yes to confirm that you want to delete the file.

Copying a file involves copying it from its old location to the clipboard and then pasting it to its new location. Moving a file involves cutting it from its old location to the clipboard and then pasting it to its new location. To copy (copy and paste) a file or to move (cut and paste) a file:

1If the file is open, close it.
2Open the Open File dialog (press Ctrl+O or click File, Open) and browse to the file that you want to copy or move.
3Right-click on the filename and click (left-click) on Copy (if you want a copy of the file to remain in the original location) or Cut (if you do not want a copy of the file to remain in the original location). If you prefer, you can click to highlight the file and then use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl+C for copy or Ctrl+X for cut.
4Browse to the folder where you want the file to appear. Right-click on the folder and click (left-click) on Paste. If you prefer, you can click to highlight the folder and then press Ctrl+V to paste.

The file that was copied or cut to the clipboard in step 3 will be pasted to the folder identified in step 4.

To create a new folder:

1Open the Open File dialog (press Ctrl+O or click File, Open).
2In the left side of the dialog, browse to the folder or drive in which you want to create a new folder and right-click on it.
3In the dialog that opens, move your cursor to New and then click (left-click) on Folder.
4Type a name for the folder in the space provided and then press Enter.

To rename a folder:

1Make sure that no files in the folder that is to be renamed are open.
2Open the Open File dialog (press Ctrl+O or click File, Open).
3Browse to the folder that you want to rename and right-click on it.
4In the dialog that opens, click (left-click) on Rename.
