Notes on Final Release
The following changes have been made:
- The SETTINGS.XML file (which controls many of the elements of visual appearance) is again now longer overwritten when installing new updates
- The message box when an error is encountered should now give more complete information (not merely the traditional 0x0 error)
- A bug in which -- if, and only if, the Action Line was hidden/entirely turned off -- the first 80 characters of a file would be overwritten by spaces when returning to that file after doing edits in another file that were not saved before that file was closed has been fixed
- You can now create a textbase in a folder that has periods in its name
- Changes have been made to Ctrl+Ins (intended to insert a new heading at the cursor, breaking the existing body text up into two segments) so that it will work even if invoked at the end of a body text region (it will then start a new heading after the current element)
- Ibidem database backup will now work with linked files that have no file type/extension
- If you press F9 when going to the Action Line immediately after opening a large file, the focus will remain on the Action Line, and text will no longer be entered into the file instead (note, however, that if you do press F9 before the document is fully composed, the page x of y calculation will not show on the Status Bar; to show that if you interrupt the calculation of total pages, click on the page counter on the Status Bar)
- Changes have been made to hotkey links:
- You can now edit links in Ibidem (previously, you had to delete the existing one, and create a new one)
- The problem that a few people have reported of links in the non-record link field being duplicated in the record-link field, or vice versa (sometimes even overwriting existing data in that field) has been fixed
- When changing the link type in the Links: Insert/Edit dialog, the data in the other fields is no longer automaticlly cleared
- Further changes have been made to ensure that messages are displayed on the Status Bar unless this option is turned off
- A bug with creating headers/footers in files with certain kinds of user-defined styles has been addressed
- The scrollbar in the Table View in Ibidem should remain visible even if you switch back and forth between full screen and restored views
- Auto replace (also when Auto Check and Replace is active) should now work again on Enter
- If you try to select a note to delete or move it while a note editing window is open, a message will be displayed, and the operation will be cancelled
- Various issues related to files not being found (especially related to keyboards when switching langugages) when installing NB in the Program Files and other similarly named folders have been addressed
- You should now consistently be able to insert a note at the very end of a framework/outline body text element (previously, it sometimes was inserted at the beginning of the next title)
- Lots of improvments were made to the Windows style print modes -- among other things, you can combine these better, and the icons should show the active status better
- You should now consistently be able to copy text from the Annotation Dialog Bar and paste it into the file
- The problem of the right scrollbar being (nearly) invisible on the right when reopening Ibidem when the full Table View was active when you last exited Ibidem has been fixed
- The “0” key has been added to the Help, Key Chart dialog
- The File, Key Chart dialog now stays open until you close it, allowing you to work on files while referring to it (although it will slip behind NB unless you drag it off to the side)
- The inactive keyboard shortcuts on the Extended Clipboard have been removed
- Some issues related cursor placement (i.e., where newly typed characters are inserted) when switching between languages with different orientations have been addressed
- Changes have been made to cursor movement in right-to-left languages (Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac)
- The default for new installations for cursor movement by word, clause, sentence, and paragraph keys is now to move to the left and right, matching the arrow directions (in earlier versions, the default setting would be to move previous and next, so that, for example, Ctrl + <- would move to the previous word, which was to the right in Arabic or Hebrew, while Ctrl + -> would move to the next word, which was to the left; the same thing would happen with next and previous clause, sentence, and paragraph)
- EXISTING USERS: To use this new default, you will need to rebuild all the keyboards for right-to-left languages (Tools, Keyboards, Setup/Select Default; then select the keyboards in sequence, and click Rebuild)
- To revert to the original style, check the Move Next/Previous (Not Left/Right) for Word, Sentence, & Paragraph on the Cursor Movement tab under Tools, Lingua (Extended Languages), Other Options; after doing so, you will (once again) need to rebuild all right-to-left languages (the dialog will give them the option of going to the Keyboard Select/Set Default dialog to do so)
- Enter again works to do auto replace (if auto replace is active)

Notes on Beta 28
|
A final beta for NB 10 (beta 28) is now available. Unless serious issues are found, a full release is scheduled to follow within a week. If you encounter any urgent issues in it, please let us know as soon as possible.
|
Notes about additional changes to beta 28 have been added at the end of this beta 28 section.
Among other changes in the first release of beta 28 are the following:
- Changes have been made to Ibidem
- The problem of the Record Manager in Ibidem not resizing correctly after maximizing and then closing Ibidem should hopefully be corrected
- The thermometer should now work when importing other types of records into Ibidem
- The crash when removing databases from the Ibidem database list, and then moving other entries up or down, has been fixed
- When changing the mode/print style of text in Ibidem, the codes will no longer occasionally go into the main NB window instead (as previously happened in some conditions)
- Importing of files (RIS, Endnote, Procite, etc., that are not in UTF-8 character encoding should work once again
- Some fixes have been made to adding and editing of Ibidem links:
- If a field already has focus when you try to add a record link, a duplicate of that record link will no longer go into that specified field
- The status of the record links (i.e., if one is already present, etc.) in the previously active record link with no longer affect the options (New, Edit, Delete, etc.) of the current record
- The Build Word List option under Proof has been changed to List Unrecognized Words (to match Help)
- All the program files in beta 28 are now “signed”—the program should no longer tell you that the publisher is not known
- The installer now displays the software license again
- In the Find/Replace dialog bar, Tab should once again move the cursor from the Find field to the Replace field, and Shift+Tab should do the reverse
- The spurious errors that some encountered when doing find/replaces (using the shortcuts keys when focus was in the Find or Replace boxes) has been fixed
- Microspacing should now work even if you installed NB 10 into a folder whose full path name was not all uppercase (yes, you read that correctly--that was the problem!)
- The Ctrl+Shift+Right Arrow option to extend the selection to the right now works properly after first having extended the selection to the left
- Only keyboards appropriate to the language should now be displayed when you go to Tools, Keyboards, Setup/Select Default
- Icons for programs and forms have been improved:
- Icons should now be clearer, both on the title bar, and on the task bar, whether small icons or large ones are selected (right click, choose Properties)
- The Ibidem icon on Ibidem proper and the task bar now matches the Ibidem icon (book on green sphere) at the top left of NB
- The forms associated with each module (Ibidem, Orbis, NB proper) now show the icon of the parent application (rather than a generic Window icon)
- A problem where InfoTips and ActionTips did not disappear when you started typing (this was especially true when switching languages) has been fixed
- Closing a file should no longer clear out the Action Line
- You should now be able to copy to/from the Annotation Dialog Bar (the remaining issues should now be fixed)
- F4 should now load Orbis even if keyboard shortcuts (Tools, Keyboards, Set Shortcut Style) are turned off
- The Orbis help options (on the main Orbis dialog) have been simplified (the reference to the printerd manual and the videos [currently only for NB 9] have been removed)
- If a set of non-maximized files is reopened using Log and Resume, subsequent files opened in NB will no longer open as maximized, and thus will not resize the files opened with Log and Resume for all newly saved log files (this fix will not affect existing log files
- Editing of headers/footers now causes the document to recompose when changes are saved
- A message box has been describing how the Replace All option on Find/Replace works (what gets replaced depends on the view)
- F3 should now work to open annotations when InfoTips indicate that the cursor is on an annotation; Del (not BkDel) is now used to delete the active citation; cursor left and right will no longer get stuck on the annotation
- The failure of various drop-down menus (when clicking on the binoculars, and the Elements option) on the Find/Replace Dialog Bar (when other dialogs bars are open) has been fixed
- Some 120 DPI issues affecting the right click Check Word option have been fixed
- A very rare crash (caused by an unusual Windows DLL) when generating an index has been fixed
- A number of fixes have been made to RTF export to correct problems with indentation of paragraphs (and improve line spacing) after block indented regionxs (and following)
- You can now interrupt indexing and other functions (which show the standard NB therometer) without getting an error
- Pressing Enter on the Set or GoTo Bookmark options should no longer try to edit or open notes/annotations; further, the last bookmark selected is now remembered, so you can simply invoke the dialog and press Enter, rather than selecting a bookmark
- A (red) error appears on the Status Bar if you attempt to switch to Codes View when Track Changes is active
- Multiple print modes (e.g., bold and italic at the same time) should work better when Windows style modes are selected
- Duplicate (contiguous) language (LA) commands are removed when files are reopened
- Duplicate (contiguous) mode commands (MD) are removed when files are reopened
- A subscript out of range error when closing Orbis (encountered by one person, but we can now reproduce) has been fixed
- Archiva will not check for updates the first time NB is started after the computer is turned on (some people received time-out related errors in these circumstances)
- If you restore the original Orbis settings (under View), subsequent customizations you make to Orbis will be remembered (previously, you had to quit NB [and not only Orbis] for changes to take effect again)
- A message is now displayed if you attempt to add a file to Orbis using File, Instant Search Status when another file is being added (this prevents the earlier crash)
An updated beta 28 was posted Saturday, September 6, at 9:00 p.m. NY time with the following changes. If you downloaded beta 28 before then, and need these corrections, please download again. (You can also wait for the final release, which is coming soon — these fixes will of course be included in that.)
- When selecting a new bibliographic style, the reference list option is automatically selected by default (as it should have been; if you don’t want this included, uncheck it)
- The Ibidem preview, and the option to generate Alt Cites, now take into account the options (capitalization, underlining, etc.) set on the other tabs (Format, Bibliographic Records, Document Style)
- Among other things, the Length field should no longer be shown in the preview
- In Ibidem, the cite button should now be displayed (rather than being mostly hidden off to the right) when you redisplay Ibidem after having quit it when it was maximized
- Text selected inside footnotes can now be copied (to other places in that note, to Ibidem fields, and to the main document, etc.)
- You can now cancel out of the Setup/install program without getting an error
An updated beta 28 was posted Monday, September 8, at 6:30 p.m. NY time with the following changes. If you downloaded beta 28 before then, and need these corrections, please download again. (You can also wait for the final release, which is coming soon — these fixes will of course be included in that.)
- The binocular icon & drop arrow on the Ctrl+F Find/Replace Dialog Bar should now work
- When invoking the Annotation Dialog Bar via the Insert menu options, or with the keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+Shift+Alt + function keys), the annotation field will have focus so you can begin typing immediately (previously, you had to click in the field)
- If the Annotation Dialog Bar is active, the above menu or shortcut options will change the annotation type to the selected type/number (previously, it just returned focus to the Annotation Dialog Bar, without selecting the specified type of annotation)
- The inactive shortcuts on the Go To Dialog Bar have been removed
An updated beta 28 was posted Wednesday, September 10, at 12:40 a.m. NY time with the following changes. If you downloaded beta 28 before then, and need these corrections, please download again. (You can also wait for the final release, which is coming soon — these fixes will of course be included in that.)
- Non-English keyboards are remembered when starting NB
- Further fixes have been made to how Tab and Shift+Tab work in the Ctrl+F Find/Replace dialog
- An odd and rare issue where inserting Windows style print modes causes the following text to be (temporarily) reformatted has been corrected
- Math totals and subtotals should once again appear on the status line
- The remaining issues related to copying and pasting to, from, and internal to the Annotations bar, as well as the function of the Enter key, should be fixed
An updated beta 28 was posted Friday, September 12, at 4:00 p.m. NY time with the following changes. If you downloaded beta 28 before then, and need these corrections, please download again. (You can also wait for the final release, which is coming soon — these fixes will of course be included in that.)
- Filenames with ampersands are now displayed without the preceding “\” in the File menu
- Further changes have been made to allow default languages and keyboards to work (whether the keyboards are set up using Tools, Keyboards, Setup/Select Default, or chosen from the Ctrl+Shift+L Language Dialog Bar)
- Additive modes (i.e., bold and italic, or underline and superscript, etc.) when Windows style modes are selected (Tools, Preferences, Print Modes/Styles) should now finally work properly
- The problem where a selected block would be deleted, rather than have its mode changed, if the selection began in column 0 of the page, has been corrected
- The bug where Shift+Tab would show the leader dialog when you clicked in the Find or Replace boxes in the Ctrl+F dialog has been fixed
- “Rumanian” has been changed to the modern “Romanian” (in Lingua)
- The error on startup (the inability to open the WELCOME.NB file if you installed in a folder than the default NBWIN folder) has been corrected
- The double pasting of text from the clipboard to the Find box and other non-text windows (that was introduced a day or so ago) has been corrected
|
Notes on Beta Release 27
|
Beta 27 corrects a few smaller issues in beta 26, and is the new “final” beta release of NB 10; unless serious issues are found, a full release is scheduled to follow shortly. If you encounter any urgent issues in it, please let us know as soon as possible.
|
Among other changes in beta 27 are the following:
- The option to return to “origin” in the Find/Replace dialog bar should now work more consistently (note that switching windows, or invoking Ctrl+F again, will reset the origin position)
- Strikethrough should now work again in Windows style print modes
- Some further changes have been made to doubled print modes (e.g., bold + italic) in Windows style print modes and these should now work better (even though virtually all style manuals recommend against using such doubled modes)
- The error beep and the correct beep (Proof, Configure Spell) should now work (if Auto Check & Replace is active)
- The very bizarre bug in which Ctrl+Shift+Right Arrow extending the selection by word in odd-numbered windows, but not in even-numbered ones (really!) has been fixed
- The release notes for beta 26 have been corrected to reflect that the option to select to the next specified character is on Ctrl+Shift+F11, and the option to select by phrase/clause is on Ctrl+Shift+F12, rather than the reverse
- The hotkeys on the various dialog bars (Ctrl+G Go To, Alt+C Table of Contents Marking, and Alt+X Index Marking) have been disabled, since they conflict with the Alt shortcuts used to access top-level menus and other dialog bars (these made sense when these dialog bars were “modal,” demanding actions on them before you could continue working, but not when they can remain open while you continue working)
- Some changes have been made to clarify how math functions work:
- The optional Shift + Number Pad keys (+, -, /, *) will now shown on the drop-down menus (Tools, Math Operations) if you go to Tools, Keyboards, Set Shortcut Style, and reselect the top Nota Bene style
- If you attempt to use the Alt+@ and Alt+# keys to clear and dump the total while the Find/Replace Dialog Bar is open, the message which previously displayed on the Status Bar telling you that you need to use the menu options instead (since these operations conflict with the Find/Replace Dialog Bar’s shortcuts) will once again work
- In beta 26, a key reassignment was not properly noted: To move to the previous and next note, you now use Shift+Alt+ Home/End, not, as previously, Ctrl+Shift+Alt + [ and ]
|
Notes on Beta Release 26
Beta 26 should be the final beta release of NB 10; unless serious issues are found, a full release is scheduled to follow shortly. If you encounter any urgent issues in it, please let us know as soon as possible.
- Because of changes made to finalize NB 10, earlier visual customizations (“skins,” “themes,” tabbed workspace settings, etc.) saved to the SETTINGS.XML file will be overwritten with this final beta install.
|
Among other changes in beta 26 are the following:
- Autosave now works with files opened from outside of NB (from My Computer, etc.)
- A bug which prevented the File, Save As dialog to go to the proper folder if the current file was “UNTITLED” has been fixed
- Even if the message line is set to expand when displaying tooltips, etc. (View, Status Bar, Options), it will be cleared out when you move the cursor over the status line (to see the controls that are temporarily hidden when the status bar expands)
- The issue of being locked into Greek or Hebrew, etc. that a couple of people have reported should now be automatically resolved (rather than requiring a reinstallation)
- Duplicate entries on the Ctrl+Shift+L language dialog should now be removed, and newly added entries will be entered more consistently
- The spurious printing dialog (which just says “filename” and “1 of 10” that shows up after the last of multiple copies has been printed has been removed
- The option to shrink and expand all tabs (Ctrl+Shift+Alt and [ and ] or Ctrl+Shift+Alt+ GrayMinus/Plus) now shrink or expand all tabs, not just the first one
- Archiva should work again to do library searches of those libraries which use port 210 (perhaps about a third of them), now that the server that performs such searches has had a bad memory DIMM replaced
- Archiva WorldCat data capture should work again
- When returning from Outline to Page-Layout View, it is no longer necessary to recompose the file (Shift+Esc) to see all lines of all notes (previously, you saw only the first line of each note until recomposition)
- You can now select an image/object in the image/object editing window and choose Format more than once (previously, you could choose that option once, but not again until you closed and reopened the window)
- Extended characters (IPA, characters from languages of Eastern Europe, etc.) should no longer prevent words that contain them from being properly handled if added to user dictionaries
- If replacing a term “x” with something like “-x,” the Continue option will now move past the replaced string and properly continue without pressing Next again
- After loading a new phrase library, the newly assigned phrases are displayed immediately after returning to the Assign/Edit dialogs (previously, you had to close and reopen that dialog to see them)
- If you insert an image/object directly into a file, without utilizing a frame, you should now be able to choose the right click options (to edit or format) without getting errors
- The options to draw boxes around elements on the status bar (View, Visual Appearance, Status Bar) are now remembered from session to session
- Hyphenation defaults (Tools, Preferences, Hyphenation) can now be changed (the values are not set to 0)
- The hyphenation parameters (minimum x characters before and after) are now honored
- Because of internal problems, the Swiss German spelling dictionary has be removed from the list of available dictionaries (we hope to reinstate this later, after the release of a final NB 10)
- When selecting which dialog bars to use when documents with framework/outline are open, you can now choose to have the pop-up InfoTips appear in addition to the toolbar or dialog bar (previously, all were mutually exclusive)
- The Chicago Manual of Style style manual has been updated to the 16th edition (note that this involves no changes unless you choose to change the default citation format away from footnotes/endnotes to use the style known variously as “style B,” “Reference List,” or others)
- Changes have been made to keyboards
- For use by those with full-size keyboards, the operations to add, subtract, multiply, and divide have been duplicated on the Shift state of the Gray Minus/Plus/Asterisk/Divide keys on the cursor pad (these still remain accessible via the regular Alt keys, but unlike these latter keys, they do not conflict with the Alt + # shortcuts available on some Dialog Bars)
- The program functions (Tools, Program Options) have been removed from the Scroll Lock key, and are now (once again) only on the “:” key (and, for those with full-size keyboards, on the “5” on the cursor pad
- Keys to extend selection forward and backward by clause/phrase have been added: Shift+Alt + [ and ] and (for full-size keyboards), Shift+Alt + Gray Minus/Plus
- Although the key to select by clause/phrase has been moved to Ctrl+Shift+F12 (to match the other similar functions on the F12 key), it has also been reinstated on Alt + \ (for those who may have used this earlier)
- The function to extend the selection to the next typed character has been moved to Ctrl+Shift+F11 (in earlier versions of NB, it was on Ctrl+Shift+F12), and should now actually work
- Note that Gray-/Gray+ on the cursor pad duplicate the assignments on the [ and ] keys (the former are of course only available on full-size keyboards, but they are in general better keys to use because of their universal [on all keyboards] directionality, something that is missing from the [ and ] keys, which have a weak directionality only on certain keyboards, such as the standard US one)
- The Help, Key Charts dialogs have been brought up to date, and the aesthetics improved a little bit
- There is now a separate key to turn OFF program recording mode—while Ctrl+Alt + : starts recording, Ctrl+Shift+Alt + : is used to end it (the status line reminds you of this end-operation sequence)
- The pop-up InfoTips should now work better
- They should no longer be split across two screens as they sometimes were if NB was in the top screen
- You can now edit in those InfoTips which allow changes to be made to the value of the setting
- Alt+PgUp/Dn should now work (as described in the InfoTip)
- The delay and auto-close settings under Help, Configure InfoTips should now work
- Some changes have been made to Ibidem:
- Import of RIS files now properly converts the default UTF-8 character encoding (multilingual text will be properly converted); in addition, the Browse button when importing RIS-format files will display files with the .RIS extension
- Work has been done on the Preview so that the Reference List style will show if you select a fixed style (it still will not show if you set up the preview to use the style active in the current paper, and that style does not have a reference list specified)
- When creating the first link in an Ibidem database, the option to show the presence of a link in the table view (Links, Icon in Table) is automatically activated
- If the option to inspect/edit a style fails because no database has been selected for the, you will not be given a message describing the reason and the solution
- The Links, Update ISBN’s option can now find items in the Library of Congress again
- When the above option doesn’t find the work in the LoC, and offers the option of manually searching Amazon, instead of taking you to the Amazon home page, it generally locates a page that lists various versions of the work in question
- Editing of existing hyperlinks should now work properly
- Other improvements have been made to all the link functions, including making the options enabled/disabled depending on the context
- You should now be able to delete a header/footer etc. by clicking on the scissors icon in the header/footer editing window (at the bottom of the screen)
- The Close File icon (on the toolbar) will no longer close two files when you click it even if the Reuse Cleaned Version of Current File option is checked on Tools, Preferences, Window Options
- Opening new windows should now involve less screen rewriting
- Among other things, the ruler line should no longer be temporarily hidden
- If this new setting creates any problems, you can revert to the original method by unchecking the “Minimize Amount of Window Redrawing” option at the bottom of Tools, Preferences, Window Options
- Some further changes have been made to Find/Replace
- After doing a search, the (very annoying!) bug in which the Tab key would not insert a tab into the file, but instead give focus back to the Search Dialog, has been addressed
- The option to Return to Origin should now work in the Find/Replace dialog (note that the origin is [re]set if you click in the file)
- The option to search index markers has been removed (it never worked, it turns out); it is still available (where it makes much more sense) on the Index Marking dialog bar (Alt+X)
- If you press Enter to begin a search, a message now appears on the Status Bar indicating that Enter now works in the file, and that to continue the search you need to use Alt+1 or click the Next button
- When using Windows style print modes (Tools, Preferences, Print Modes/Styles...), you can now use multiple print modes without multiple «MD+xx»/MD-xx» going into the file
- The options on Tools, Preferences, Print Modes/Styles... have been re-ordered (the Windows standard is now listed first)
- The option to display the Instructional Videos have been removed from the Help menu because these have not yet been updated from version 9 (these version 9 videos may still be useful, and so they will still remain available for viewing on the web until new NB 10 versions replace them)
- A few changes have been made to Spell
- When right clicking on an unrecognized word, there are now two options: (1) Add to Dictionary (to add the word directly to the primary user dictionary, without any further dialog display); and (2) Other Spell Options, which displays the dialog currently shown by the now-removed Correct Word option
- Error beeps work once again (if Auto Check and Replace is on)
- Various changes have been made to the Check Word option (displayed when the current word is not flagged), including to make the option to show which dictionary contains that word work more reliably
- Changes have been made to the Utilities Pane (Alt + U; currently only spelling utilities): The wording has been changed, the cursor now is positioned back in the file even when you double click an item from the list
- A few changes have been made to the Action Line
- Directory commands issued while a directory is already displayed should now show the proper files specified in the new command
- Files stored using “ST” on the Action Line will now be added to the most-recently-used file list on the File menu (but only if “ST” is used by itself, or with the full path of a new filename on the default drive [i.e., not something like “dissertation\notes.nb,” and not something to a non-default drive); in addition, a new “[UNTITLED]” file will no longer be opened after using this option
- You should be able to change the justification defaults on the Spacing tab under Tools, Preferences, Page Layout without getting errors
- Fixed an odd bug whereby inserting text in italics, bold, etc., at the beginning of a line sometimes temporarily picked up the indentation defined in the bibliographic citation format ( (but only when Windows style print modes were active)
- Another odd (and infrequent) bug when pasting that generates an error beep and a slight delay before the text appears has been corrected
- F3 on an index marker should now properly open the Index Marking dialog bar (and should no longer start marking words for the index just because it is pressed in a file in which the previous or next marker is an index marker!)
- F3 should now open footnotes even when there are improperly formed “generate-citation” commands immediately before the note
- The “engine service 12” error that a couple of people reported when exiting NB has been fixed
- If moving from a 2 (or more) monitor system back to a single one, Ibidem, Orbis, and Archiva should now be automatically moved onto the visible monitor, even if they were last displayed on the now unplugged monitor (and NB proper should now also be moved to the main monitor if it was on the monitor to the right [the change made in beta 24 only automatically moved it if it was on the top or left monitor])
- The overlap of shortcuts on the Insert (Other Breaks and Hyperlink/Hotkeys) and Tools (Lingua and Action Line) has been corrected
- The superfluous messages about filenames and file paths plus names not showing up in open headers/footers until they are closed has been removed (since they do now show up while the command window is open)
- Files with ampersands in their names (e.g., “Flowers & trees”) are now properly displayed in the File and Window menus, as well as in the Alt+D Document dialog bar
|
Notes on Beta Release 25
Among other changes in beta 25 are the following:
- We have now finally solved the mystery of the couple of dozen reports of instances where commands go into files (NB proper, Ibidem preview, etc.) without the surrounding command brackets (our diagnosis was always that there was another [at least partial] copy of NB running, and that turned out to be the case; even with multiple copies, this should no longer be a problem)
- An issue with the cursor jumping up a few lines when the cursor is moved over a footnote (of a very precise format—an opening parenthesis needs to be the 256th character, although in footnotes with citations this is not all that unexceptional) has been corrected
- The issue that a couple of people reported with a window named “Closed” remaining after saving the last open file has been fixed
- Some more Orbis issues have been addressed:
- A problem with the file structure when components from pre- and early-release NB 10 textbases are still around has been corrected
- A crash when using Alt+PgDn to get more context has been fixed
- Some Archiva issues have been addressed:
- The JSTOR capture rules have been improved (some pages were not getting captured)
- Amazon page capture should now work more reliably (although, as before, there is not enough information on Amazon to fill all fields required for citation)
- ISBN lookup should once again capture data from Amazon when there is no record of the work in the Library of Congress (the Amazon data is not complete, as noted above, but it should at least give author, title, and year)
- Improvements have been made to Find/Replace:
- Enter should work again to start a Find/Search
- The issue that a few people have reported of searches no longer working after making replacements in notes should now be fixed
- Manual edits made in footnotes/endnotes while doing a search will now be saved when that note is closed and the search continues on past it
- If the replacement text is a longer version of the text to be replaced (e.g., “devote” to “devoted”), and the replacement is in a footnote/endnote, the program will now move beyond the note after it is closed, rather than trying to make the change again within the same note
- All hidden commands (especially modes) are now expanded out/displayed, even in regular (non-Codes View)
- Some changes have been made to cross referencing:
- If labels are inserted inside of counters, cross references to them should now be correct (they were one off)
- The dialog now lets you insert labels inside of counters properly (previously, it worked rather haphazardly)
- Double clicking on a cross reference (when the mouse icon show a large “GO”) will now take you to the location of the label
- The little pop-up that displays when taken to the label has (somewhat) improved icons, and is rearranged; the functions also now work again
- Some changes have been made to manuscript files:
- Changes made to manuscript files are now saved back to the component files even if the Reuse Clean Version of Current Window option is checked on the Tools, Preferences, Window Options dialog
- If you click on a manuscript file name in the File menu (options 1 to 9), it will no longer report an error, but will instead take you to the manuscript file editing/opening dialog for that file
- Some changes have been made to Ibidem:
- The Record Link field has been added to the 3 web templates (even though Ibidem does not yet format such records fully)
- If you are trying to back up a database, and the destination backup file cannot be created (for example, if the drive is not on-line), the process will be terminated, rather than continuing with an error on every record
- The odd bug in which (a) multiple files are open; (b) a note is opened; (c) and then Ibidem is loaded; and (d) a work is cited, but the cite goes into one of the other open files, has been fixed
- When Ibidem is closed, focus is set back to NB (there is no need to click into NB first)
- You can now toggle a dynamic citation back on again (after having earlier turned it off), using either the Format, Bibliographic References menu or the right click popup
- The error 3 and error 27 messages that ensue when buttons on existing toolbars are deleted has been corrected
- European paper sizes should now be picked up properly when you return to Format, Page Layout
- When selecting the Selection Type (Tools, Preferences, Selection Type), the corresponding option (to replace/not replace a selection) on the Tools, Clipboard dialog is also automatically updated
- The reversal when saving to RTF of the lunate sigma and stigma has been corrected
- The confusion about how to activate Archiva has hopefully been removed (it uses the main product key used during installation) -- Tools, Archiva, Activate Other Options only describes the options; clicking Activate takes you to the Help, Activate Add-on Modules dialog
- A problem in which Ctrl+M (to move selected text) didn’t work (when the original “persistent” style of NB selection was active) has been corrected
- Fixes have been made to default settings that control the display (on/off) of the yellow and green brackets in Frameworks/Outlines (they can now be set under Tools, Preferences, Framework/Outlines, Markers...; the option is now properly displayed [and the active status shown] on the View menu [previously the Cycle Commands function of Shift+F3 that is activated when you switch to Draft View was displayed instead])
- The Quick Open file list (Ctrl+F9) should now sort properly by date
- A rare crash when right clicking on a word and choosing Correct Word which returned (for some odd reason) an empty string as the last alternate has been corrected
|
Notes on Beta Release 24
Among other changes in beta 24 are the following (items marked with an asterisk [*] have been fixed/added more recently):
- *The recently introduced problem whereby languages selected via the Ctrl+Shift+L Language Dialog Bar not getting added to the Recent Languages list has hopefully been resolved
- Column tables should be substantially more robust (although not yet more fully featured) — a very long-standing (perhaps even a decade-long) bug related to when column tables span pages has been fixed
- A crash when a column table has a corrupted footnote (i.e., when the footnote begins, but is never ended) has been addressed
- Redo should now work again properly
- The extra LA (language) codes inserted when switching languages should no longer appear
- When reselecting academic style manuals (to make edits in the selected style), the note formats (including separators) will now be retained
- *If you are running on a multiple-monitor system, and the program is displayed on a second monitor when you exit, but you next start your system without the external monitors being connected,
- Windows style modes (bold, italic, etc.) should now work properly (turning off, as well as on)
- A footnote-related crash when switching to Draft View has been fixed
- The “final page” count on the status line should now work much better (be updated more quickly; note that you will see “x of ...” until the file has been completely composed)
- Counters insider headers (a problem in files larger than 64K) has been addressed
- You should once again be able to hide/unhide individual points in Outline View (Shift+F7) without that point getting hidden instead
- When body text is displayed in Outline View, and there are footnotes in the body text, the note number will no longer cause overwriting of the bottom third of the previous line
- Pressing Enter in the GoTo dialog should now implement the function, rather than inserting a paragraph break into the file; in addition, it should go to the proper place on the page if going to “page”
- If only an untitled file is open when you close NB, no “last” Log and Resume state will be saved when you exit
- Files with redlining codes (as track changes was then called) inserted prior to NB 8 will now be processed correctly
- You should be able to customize toolbars without crashing
- An option to disable Ctrl+M to resize (“minus”/”more”) the Find/Replace Dialog has been added (Tools, Preferences, Find/Replace)
- You can now clear the last Find string in the Find/Replace Dialog using Tools, Preferences, Find/Replace (a few people have reported problems with searching, mostly caused by there being hidden format commands in the Find/Replace Dialog; this option lets you clear that without going to Codes View)
- *Changes have been made to frameworks/outlines:
- *The dialog to configure the Toolbar, Options Bar, and Navigation Bar has been changed
- *The options in that dialog should now work more reliably
- *The dialog can now also be accessed from Tools, Preferences, Framework/Outlines (as well as by clicking the setup button now on all three of the above toolbars/dialog bars)
- Changes have been made to spelling:
- *A spell popup no longer appears immediately if you right click on a misspelled word; to display the spell popup shown in earlier versions, click the Correct Word option at the bottom of the regular popup; this change has been made because:
- *Many people found it confusing to have a different popup when the word was misspelled
- *It’s not at all obvious that checking the spelling is the desired action (one might, for example, want to italicize a foreign word)
- *The earlier popup, in any case, disappeared if you tried to edit the alternates word (this no longer misbehaves)
- *The earlier popup would crash in Windows XP
- *The Check Word option at the bottom of the regular popup (when you are on a word that is not flagged) has been improved (it tells you whether the word is in the main dictionary, in specified user dictionaries; in the main dictionary but overridden in a user dictionary, etc.)
- Spell checking now works in an Ibidem field again
- Proof, User Dictionaries should no longer lock up (or have the dictionary list on top of it)
- Custom spell settings should now (finally) be saved (not only were they sometimes not saved between sessions, they were sometimes not even retained from one invocation of the Configure dialog to the next invocation)
- If the flagged word is in initial caps, all the alternates will also be displayed in initial caps
- A new option has been added to the Proof, Configure Spell dialog that lets you “Show Only the Spelling Popup on Right Click” (and not also the standard right click dialog)
- This option is automatically set on startup for XP systems, in the hope that it work around the crash that otherwise is encountered on systems running XP
- If you are running XP, and want to experiment with the original setting, simply uncheck this option — it will not be reset automatically (after the first time)
- When using Proof, Spell File/Block or Spell One Word, the text should now be displayed properly even if it contains modes (previously, the sequence of words was garbled)
- Lots of changes have been made to Orbis, including the following:
- The Orbis Tutorial has now been updated to reflect the major changes in NB 10
- *F4 should work to bring Orbis into view if it is hidden behind Nota Bene
- Orbis should load and exit faster and cleaner
- Other operations should also be cleaner
- A thermometer will show on the NB status line as Orbis loads
- The default is now to auto-close the indexer when the process is completed as new textbases are created or existing textbases are updated (there is no longer any need to click Finish when done; if you want to continue to be able to do so, go to File, Preferences [in Orbis])
- The occasion error that no textbases exist when doing a quick search from within NB (Ctrl+Shift+F) that a few people reported should now be fixed
- Right clicking on one of the Orbis panes (Search, Query, Source, History) will toggle between hiding the pane (replacing it back as a tab) and docking the pane
- You can now retrieve biblical texts (in you have that option) before doing a search on the database
- The Insert, Orbis Keywords menu option now works (previously, only the keyboard shortcut options worked reliably)
- Changes have been made to Ibidem:
- You should now be able to sort the table view by year
- Fast (indexed) searches by year should now work (after rebuilding the indexes using File, Maintain Database, Maintain...)
- The recently added 16th edition of the Chicago Manual of Style Reference List now properly outputs the “a,” “b,” “c,” etc. in order to disambiguate works published in the same year
- You should now be able to paste multilingual text into Ibidem fields (and other NB fields in other dialogs)
- Spell checking now works in an Ibidem field again
- The vertical scrollbar in Ibidem multi-line fields should no longer shift left when you type enough text to require another line
- The “Print.” designation for items in MLA Works Cited should now appear at the end where it belongs
- Shift+BkDel (to delete backward by sentence) and Ctrl+Alt+LeftArrow (to move backward by sentence) should now work properly in footnotes
- The option to display/hide the Find/Replace dialog by checking/unchecking it on the popup menu that is displayed when you right click on a toolbar has been removed (this created display problems with the Find/Replace dialog)
- The current date should now show up in the drop-down box where you select a new date (Insert, Date/Time)
- The tooltip for the file in the tab workspace should now match the file name even after doing a File, Save As
- The program should no longer crash when you try to set Draft View as the default while in Page Layout View
- If the main document has a framework/outline defined, and auto enter is on, Enter in a footnote will insert paragraph break, rather than trying to insert an framework/outline point
- Auto sizing of frames that contain images/objects should now work properly
- š and Š should now case properly
- You should no longer get a message about the file being an autosave version when files with three characters in their entire filename are opened from the action line (without specifying the drive and/or path)
- *You should again be able to customize the Action Line (change its width, etc.) without crashing
- *The icons when resizing the width of the Action Line have been changed -- the left/right orientation of the previous ones made sense if the Action Line was on the right, and needed to be expanded to the left, but didn’t make any sense if the Action Line was on the left, or on its own line
- *You should be able to change the case of a selected block that ends in a print style/mode
- *The Navigation Dialog Bar should no longer show numbers (if that option is selected) for Frameworks/outlines items which don’t have numbers simply because the cursor is positioned at the very top of the file
- *Tooltips should work again (they did not work in initial releases of beta 24)
- *Typing Enter with a selected block will replace that block with the paragraph marker (if Windows-style selection is active) -- i.e., Enter now works like any other key again
- The options on the Insert, Breaks submenu should now all work
- *The thesaurus should work again (it did not work in earlier prereleases of beta 24)
- *You can now type a number and have the selected bookmark option (on the Ctrl+Q and Ctrl+Shift+Q dialog) implemented (it is no longer necessary to use the mouse)
|
Notes on Beta Release 23
Among other changes in beta 23 are the following:
- Boxes should no longer be drawn around elements in headers/footers, and the boxes shown on screen when using counters should no longer print
- A variety of “focus/activation” issues have been addressed — Ctrl + ? should keep the spell checker on top of Nota Bene rather than slipping behind it, and F7 should reliably bring Ibidem to the fore
- Handling of illegal (badly formed) formatting commands should now be improved
- The program should process these better; at the same time, as has always been the case, you should correct these errors without ignoring them, since continued editing with commands that the program cannot process while ignoring the warnings may ultimately lead to crashes
- The message about illegal commands is no more prominent and persistent
- At the same time, note that this error may not be displayed immediately upon the file being called (it will as you move through the file to the problematic place), since we no longer process the entire file immediately (in order to increase composition speed)
- There is now a “Find Error” button on the status line that should (in most cases) take you to the source of the error
- Page numbers should continue across chapters (if the option to continue numbering) was selected (in other words, the “?” parameter to the SP command now works)
- Changed page-layout and paragraph settings should now finally be remembered from session to session
- Edits made to graphics embedded in frames are now saved back to the source file (it turned out that you could set size, cropping, etc., only when first creating the graphic, but you could not edit these in an existing graphic)
- Changes/fixes have been made to spell checking:
- As noted above, the Ctrl+? (spell one word) dialog should no longer disappear behind NB after the first invocation of it
- The “Cannot find dictionary” error that sometimes was encountered when going to Proof, Configure Spell should no longer be displayed
- Some crashes caused by having the German spelling dictionary loaded should be addressed
- Changes have been made to Ibidem:
- F7 should now work reliably to activate Ibidem, whether in the body of the text or from within footnotes
- A new Ibidem short-form style in the format “Smith and Jones, “Title,” ## or “Smith and Jones, Title, ## has been added (it is in the “by pattern” section, around the middle of the “Smith and Jones” section)
- Ibidem will now auto select the open database when trying to cite into a file where no database is defined
- If you select a dynamic footnote cite to delete it, it will now delete all the elements associated with that cite (the opening , the note, and the closing ), and thus no longer leave any residue in the file (i.e., the following text will no longer turn blue)\
- The Ibid preview will no longer switch out of Auto format mode just because a paper does not have a reference-list format set
- When citing a work in a paper for which a bibliographic style is not set, the citation will now go in at the correct position if you select a new style (and not only the default, which is what worked previously)
- Quite a few changes have been made to Orbis
- There is now a “Go/Search” button on the Orbis main form (you can still press Enter to begin the search)
- Orbis will no longer give an error and crash when you try to delete a textbase which you have already (outside of NB) deleted the folder in which the management files exist
- The status of Orbis panes is now displayed on the Orbis View menu (open panes are checked)
- The options on the drop-list on the Entry Pane should now work
- Highlight next/previous terms have now been added to the Retrieve menu, and have been given shortcuts (Shift+PgUp/Dn)
- People using Internet Explorer as their browser should now be able to paste in text from the Perseus Project without getting extraneous mode and language markers
- The view buttons on the view toolbar should now show which view is currently active
- A problem with justification when there are accents on uppercase Greek characters (that are placed to the left of the base character) has been corrected
- File operations when using “DIR” from the Action Line should now work better
- You should be able to turn Alt+# shortcuts for Find/Replace dialog on/off
- Implementing a command from the Action Line using Enter should no longer clear any selection in the file
- The list of cross-reference labels (Alt+R) should no longer be improperly cleared when you are inside a note
- The NB, Orbis, Ibidem icons on the top of NB and Orbis will now properly open the selected module even if that module is minimized (on the task bar)
- The background graphic reading “NB 10 Alpha” that a few people saw when starting NB and/or opening and closing files has been removed
- The little white box that momentarily flashes at the top left as NB loads has been removed
- The ruler line and cursor should now be properly positioned in the blank file that is displayed when NB first opens
|
Notes on Beta Release 22
Among other changes in beta 22 are the following:
- A crash that followed upon virtually every occurrence of an “illegal formatting command” has been corrected (improperly formed commands should still be flagged, of course, and corrected, when encountered, but their presence should certainly not cause NB to crash)
- You should once again be able to sort Ibidem fields (by clicking on the column header) without getting an error (and being thrown out of Nota Bene)
- When citing a work within an open footnote, Ibidem should no longer mistakenly tell you that no style has been selected for the document (the other errors having to do with the inability to replace the GC command that resulted from this should therefore also disappear)
- A major oversight has been corrected: the autosave function should now fully work (previously, it only saved one version, not the specified number) for files opened from the MRU (most recently used) list on the File menu, for files opened via the Alt+D Document Dailog Bar, or from the Action Line (if you don’t want the to work on the Action Line, use the “ED” rather than the “CA/CALL” command), and not only, as it did previously, for files called from File, Open, or from Log and Resume (it still does not work for files opened by clicking on them in Windows)
- Boxes drawn around words (using Ctrl+9/0) now print
- Apostrophes after words that are in user dictionary should no longer result in those words being flagged as misspelled
- Orbis should now let you index files that have attributes set on network servers to allow storing the file off line or on a server (for the technically inclined, it now will index files that have FILE_ATTRIBUTE_SPARSE_FILE [0x00000200] and FILE_ATTRIBUTE_REPARSE_POINT [0x00000400]--the reparse data tells NTFS where to get the actual file)
- You can now delete the last textbase in Orbis (without getting a Permission Denied error)
- Microspacing (Ctrl+Shift+M) should now work much better
- The “Done” message should now show up in the color set for “Errors” rather than “Messages” only on the options performed via the File menu and from the Action Line, where visibility may be important, and no longer in other routine contexts where some internal function or operation has succeeded
- The “append” and “apt” (append to top) commands should now work (but there is no menu interface for them)
- Some issues with not being able to click on lines in larger or different fonts when auto-leading is on should be addressed
- A rare crash when the Outline Navigation bar was active, but then closed, has been fixed
- An infrequent crash (in the background log and resume function) when exiting NB (but which didn’t involve loss of data, since all files had already been saved) has been corrected
- The annoying (but not fatal) “®HY1¯®LR1¯®LR1¯Program Error 0x0; M.D.I. Load” error on loading has been fixed
- The currently active status of reference list (whether it is included for the current paper or not) is now properly retained when going to Format, Bibliographic References, Document Style (previously, it would always be turned on every time you displayed that dialog)
- If you have a language active in NB (e.g., Arabic or Hebrew), and then switch to Ibidem, when you return to the original file that language should be reactivated
- The Recent Languages list in the Language Dialog bar should no longer show languages duplicated
- URLs copied from Firefox should no longer be corrupted (some had RTF encoding as part of the URL)

Notes on Beta Release 21
Beta 21 includes the following fixes, among many other things. (Note that like the last few betas, beta 21 will overwrite most of the customizations set under View, Visual Appearance, so you will need to reset them. Restoring them, however, should only take a few minutes, and so we strongly encourage you to not let that be a reason for not installing this improved version.)
- A long-standing limitation (but only reported this week, and by two people within days of each other!) that would not allow Ibidem databases to be in paths longer than 80 characters has been removed
- A strange bug whereby the first citation in a session sometimes goes into another file (the Alt+F10 toggle pair) has been fixed
- Changes have been made to Ibidem to try to address the problems a few reported about being required to reselect the database and/or the bibliographic style each time files were open (if you still encounter this in beta 21, please send a single file in which this happens, along with the IBIDEM.INI file from the ..\USERS\DEFAULT folder)
- The preview in Ibidem should once again pick up the active style in the open document (if you have selected that auto option), rather than a fixed style
- Colors selected with Tools, Preferences, Screen Display should now work on all files (and not only the first), without needing to type text or press Shift+Esc to redraw the screen
- In addition, selecting a color (via Ctrl+7 or 8, or by using the buttons) should now longer change the border and/or background colors on subsequent files
- The totals/subtotals in math are once again displayed on the status line, as is “Done” and other similar messages
- An error with Context Previous and Next in Orbis has been fixed (this should actually address a fair number of Orbis issues)
- The errors a few people reported when using File, Instant Search Status have been fixed
- A fix (hopefully, since we don’t have other reports, and cannot reproduce it) has been made to a lockup when closing notes
- You can now enter title text for both tables of contents and indexes (the button on the Generate option for each) without the program going into an endless loop
- The error in product keys that prevented some people from initially installing Lingua has been corrected
- Some changes have been made to address issues of product keys not taking effect to override the trial status (most of these are related to the problems created in Windows by having “virtual” setups)
- Tab (and Shift+Tab) now toggle back and forth between the Find and Replace fields in the Ctrl+F Find/Replace dialog bar
- The spurious “too many characters” in filename error when using custom templates has been removed
- The Replace & Continue option in Find/Replace should work properly, even if the element replaced was in a note window
- The small “Click to Discover a New Way of Working” dialog that used to appear the first time NB was run after an installation or update, and which some people have reported persisting in beta 20, has now been suppressed
- The key chart (Help, Key Charts) has been resized so that it will fit vertically on 800 x 600 monitors; vertically, however, users on monitors less than 1024 pixels wide will need to click on the dialog titlebar and drag it left and right to see the full width of the chart
- When inserting the first note into a file for which note formats have not already been set, after the formats are set, the cursor (and thus the first note) will be properly positioned, rather than at the top of the second page
- The bug which would delete a selected block when going from Page-Layout to Draft View has been fixed
- Justified text will now display as justified on screen even when the red squigglies for dynamic real-time spelling are on (the problem did not exist if you chose the yellow background option)
- The filters to convert old Special Language Supplements and Shappirit (an early Israeli version of NB) have been removed — Nota Bene 3 was released in 1988, and then eventually replaced by Nota Bene 4 in 1992; we supported conversion from NB version 3 for 22 years, all the way up to NB version 9, but when we had to move to the new 64-bit compatible versions of Windows (for NB 10), we had to drop that support, since the conversion module won't run on 64-bit Windows, and for various technical reasons cannot be easily converted; accordingly, if you have files in either format, you should convert them now on machines that run NB 9 (we will set up some service — details to be decided on — to allow converting of these files for people who can no longer access such machines)
- A problem that some people encountered where “G1” was inserted into the file when switching to Hebrew has been fixed
- You should now be able to continue replacing found text inside a footnote (previously, it closed the note window and then stopped)
- Changes have been made to try to make sure that note formatting commands are not set up in regions that are centered and/or use large fonts (doing so would cause the notes to pick up those formats as well)
- Changes have also been made in how the status line works when the cursor is on a formatting command
- The odd behavior when clicking with the mouse inside a non-dynamic citation should be fixed
- Hopefully the problem that one or two people have reported with an extra blank window (without a file) being opened on startup should be fixed
- Ctrl+V should now only copy text, not move it, when the original NB persistent style selection is active
|
Notes on Beta Release 20
Beta 20 continues to refine NB 10, bringing the program closer to final release. As before, there are still some known bugs, but the number of outstanding issues decreases by the day. But if issues you have reported are not yet fixed, you do not need to report them again — rest assured that they are on our list, and will be dealt with shortly.
A few issues merit special mention:
- We have just discovered that the auto-updating process has not been working for the last couple of releases. While many of you have come to this page and downloaded the recent releases (16, 17, 18, and 19) after being directed here by NB News, others of you may not have been aware that newer versions were available. This should now be corrected going forward — once you install beta 20, you will be notified of subsequent new releases. But users of versions 16, 17, 18, and 19 won’t be notified, and will need to download manually from this page, precisely because the failure to notify is a bug in the versions that they are currently running.
- Some people reported problems with editing of notes in beta 19 (and perhaps betas 17 and 18) — in some cases, the end of the note was doubled during editing. This has been fixed in beta 20. If you are concerned that this might have happened to you without you knowing about, you can have NB check the file for possible errors: Go to Format, Notes, select the series, and click Check Notes. If a possible error is detected, you will be given the opportunity to delete the doubled text, keep it, or cancel. (If you cancel, you can repeat the Check Notes process from anywhere in the file.)
- Like beta 18 and 19, beta 20 will overwrite most of the customizations set under View, Visual Appearance, so you will need to reset them.
- Beta 20 now includes a new option under the Help menu, Friends of Nota Bene. Be sure to check it out. (Please let us know if there are any errors or omissions there. And if you are one of the anonymous ones, we’d encourage you to change your mind and let us acknowledge your contribution to the larger Nota Bene community.)
|
Beta 20 has lots of improvements, some very significant (especially the first few items on this list):
- The startup of Nota Bene should now be much cleaner, with less flashing (with a secondary startup screen)
- The screen display should be significantly improved in other areas — there is much less flashing and screen rewriting when performing other operations (e.g., when inserting annotations into a file from the Annotation Dialog Bar)
- Closing notes should now be quick and crisp, even in long files (you will certainly notice the difference)
- The episodic failure of F3 to open notes should now be corrected
- The Chicago Manual of Style author-date citation format rules have been updated for the 16th edition (with the 16th edition, the casing of titles and the format of author names in the author-date system now matches the format of the notes & bibliography system, with titles being more fully capitalized, and author names being spelled out in full); since this is such a radial break with the past, we have retained the older format for those journals who have not (yet?) adopted the changed format (the new format is noted as the 16th edition; the old format is listed without edition number)
- The bug that causes a crash if you (a) exit Ibidem when the (b) Annotations Dialog Bar is active has been fixed
- Further fixes have been made to ensure that entering new outline elements works properly, even if the cursor is positioned at the very end of the current element (even after the Title End component)
- You should no longer receive an error (harmless but annoying) when doing a change with Notes or Elements checked
- The issue where occasionally the ends of footnotes had some duplicated text (the last part of the note being duplicated) has been fixed (see above)
- You can now edit note separators properly (this was broken, then fixed, and then broken again, before now being fixed)
- The Action Line should now be redisplayed after doing a Change Verify on the Action Line (when the top-line prompt is closed/disappears)
- The Character Properties popup (Ctrl+Shift+T) should now work
- Enter and Ctrl+Alt+Enter should now work in the Annotations dialog bar
- Undo/redo should now work better (and the toolbar buttons should be properly activated/deactivated)
- The Shift+Ins style shortcut dialog should now work (but unlike in previous versions, the dialog displays immediately after you press Shift+Ins, rather than waiting for F1; but no additional keystrokes are required to insert the style -- Shift+Ins, and then the shortcut key will immediately insert it
- Finally, a change made in beta 19 which should have been noted, but was omitted: If you change some text (title, author, class, etc.) in an academic style manual, any custom layout settings are not changed back to the defaults unless you confirm that you want to do so
|
Notes on Beta Release 19
Beta 19 corrects most of the more significant issues that were introduced by the totally-restructured beta 17/18 (that were not encountered during the preliminary release of 17). A few larger issues remain (but almost all of these seemingly affect only a single person), which we will fix in another beta to be released shortly. At the same time as we will be fixing these more significant, even if isolated, issues, we will also begin to address the remaining smaller issues. Not many of these will show up in this new beta, but should appear in the next one. If you have reported something that is not yet included, don’t worry—we keep track of everything that comes in, and will eventually take a close look at every report. (While there is no need to report these again, feel free to update us on any issue which is preventing you from working.)
|
Note: Like beta 18 before it, beta 19 will overwrite most of the customizations set under View, Visual Appearance, so you will need to reset them.
|
Among other changes, in beta 19:
- A variety of issues with margin-override mode (Ctrl+Shift+F5) have been addressed:
- Note-taking files can now be opened from within Ibidem without crashing when margins are hidden
- The text/file should now redisplay immediately after returning to Page-Layout View after going to Codes View (rather than requiring you to press a key)
- You can now select the entire file (Ctrl+A)
- All the footnotes on the page now display at the bottom of that page, rather than having the last lines drop off (on pages which had a larger than normal gap between the last line of the body text and the first line of notes)
- The problem with having to reset the Ibidem database when reopening a file after restarting NB has been fixed; similarly, you should be able to cite in the first note opened in a file without being told that you need to activate the proper database
- A crash related to typing a large footnote in a file (as the first note in a session) has been fixed
- When changing the text fields in an academic style manual (i.e., the title, course, author, etc.), other layout/format settings will no longer be reset to the default unless you respond to the prompt indicating that you want to do so
- Setting reverse sorting order (Tools, Sort) should now work
- When right clicking on a citation, the citation popup menu is now shown even if the cursor is on an unrecognized word in that citation (previously, it would take you to the spell popup, not the citation popup, if the cursor happened to be on an unrecognized word; this also fixes a crash in Vista [not Windows 7 or 8] when right clicking on an unrecognized element in a citation)
- Changing the print mode of a word at the end of a line, sentence, or file should no longer skip the last character
- Cross-file search (File, Files Options, Search Files) has been implemented again
- Orbis should no longer crash when reopened if previously closed in Full Screen mode, or when minimizing it
- The keystroke and menu options to display context of matches, etc. are disabled until search results are displayed (in the current version, if you press them without results being displayed, you would crash)
- Focus should now be returned to the document after closing the Search and Language Dialog Bars, as well as when opening the first file after starting NB (you should no longer need to click in the file with the mouse)
- Additional fixes have been made to correct dialogs on 125DPI (large font) systems
- After closing a note, it should no longer be necessary to click with the mouse into the file in order to paste text
- Action line settings (on or off) should now be remembered from session to session
- The lockup when invoking the Ctrl+F Find/Replace dialog when the last character in the last search was a (Greek) final sigma has been fixed
- Ctrl+H (Hanging indent on/off) has been reimplemented
- The occasional problem where continued (unindented) paragraphs after a block indent would sometimes end the line shorter (as though the indent was in effect) has been corrected
- After closing a note, the top of the file should not momentarily flash on screen
- The new problem some people reported when opening citations (as notes) created automatically by Ibidem has been fixed
- On the Find/Replace dialog, you should now be able to search through notes just by checking the Notes checkbox (you no longer also need to check Elements)
- If footnotes with citations are missing the final code, updating the citations will no longer keep adding formatted versions of the already existing citations in that note
- You should once again be able to customize the toolbars (using the Add/Remove Buttons, then Customize options accessed by clicking the little arrow at the end of the toolbar)

Notes on Beta Release 18
|
DID YOU MISS BETA 17?
Through all 25 earlier alphas and betas, we had a two-stage release cycle: We first released the program to a smaller group of testers, and only after they indicated that no major new problems had been released did we make it “live”—i.e., so that all users would be auto-updated when they next restarted Nota Bene.
As you can see from the long list below, beta 17 included lots of changes, on top of a major restructuring of the program, and those major changes introduced a variety of issues that needed to be fixed before we were able to make it available to the larger group of NB users. We have fixed these over the last two weeks (the longer-than-usual pre-release period), making interim beta 17 releases available to the test group during that time in order to make sure that the issues were addressed.
Now that we have a working beta 17 (one that is very close to a final NB 10, although some issues remain), we have decided to call this latest release beta 18, in part so that those who earlier downloaded beta 17 will be automatically notified of an updated release.
IF YOU MISSED BETA 17, IS IT VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU READ
AT LEAST THE PRELIMINARY BOXED SECTIONS
OF THE “NOTES ON BETA 17” BELOW
|
|
Beta 18 includes all of the changes in beta 17 listed below (as it does all earlier changes, of course), plus three other changes:
- A new and improved Help files is included—a preliminarly version of Orbis Help is now available and many topics have been added or clarified
- If Orbis is open, and files are added/removed (in the background), before a new search is performed, Orbis will automatically close the old indexes (without the updated files) and load the new index, making sure that you are always searching the latest data
- A crash when editing headers/footers has been addressed
- NOTE: There are still known problems/crashes when creating and opening note-taking files from within Ibidem when margins are suppressed as the default (Tools, Preferences, Document Views), so for the moment you should not set this option if you are working on note files (this will be fixed very soon)

Notes on Beta Release 17
Beta 17 incorporates major interface and structural changes. Among others, these include:
- As noted in NB News, the Nota Bene product has been restructured:
- Nota Bene now comes as one basic program, with add-ons:
- The main Nota Bene program is now “Nota Bene: The Scholar’s Workstation”
- As earlier, this includes Ibidem and Orbis
- Lingua, rather than being a second separate product, is now an add-on to the basic Nota Bene program
- Other add-on products (for example, Archiva and extended alphabets) remain unchanged
- This one-program model has been implemented consistently, so that there is now a single download of the program which is turned into other versions by typing in access/authorization codes:
- The trial version is a time-limited and printing-disabled version of the main Nota Bene product, and is the version that everybody downloads
- To turn the trial version into a full non-limited Nota Bene version, you enter a product key
- Similarly, to activate Lingua you also type in an product code
|
When installing, you must type in the product code given on the order/download page in order for the proper features to be activated
|
- There is now a single product key enables all the add-ons you have licensed (Lingua, Archiva, extended alphabets, etc.)
- The web site and order form do not yet reflect this major structural change
- Initially, this makes no difference—the product listed as Lingua Workstation is equivalent to Nota Bene plus the Lingua add-on module
- Eventually, however, this structural change will allow different product configurations
|
- All the menu items, tooltips, descriptions, and keyboard shortcuts should now be complete and consistent
In order for these updated elements to be activated, current interface/visual appearance customizations (those saved in the SETTINGS.XML file) need to be overwritten (this happens automatically during the install)
It’s also possible that this may be necessary one more time (in the next beta), but resetting whatever options are overwritten should not take much time.
|
- The Find/Replace Dialog Bar has been completely reworked
- It now appears at the top of Nota Bene, rather than as a side dialog
- It can be displayed in a basic single-line mode, or in an enhanced double-line mode
- To toggle between these modes, press Ctrl+M (More/Minus) after Ctrl+F, or click the plus/minus icons
- Note also that you can close the Find/Replace Dialog Bar by doing Ctrl+F twice in succession
- This dialog can remain open while other dialog bars are displayed in the traditional right-panel mode
- You can now remove items from the search stack, or change their order
- You can set up F10 to do forward searches (until overridden by Action Line settings), and Shift+F10 to do reverse searches
- There is a Notes checkbox that lets you easily check notes, without checking other elements
- The elements (Elements checkbox) selected in the last search are remembered across sessions
- The Language Dialog Bar (Ctrl+Shift+L) has also been reworked
- You can configure if this dialog bar is docked, if it floats, or if it functions as a pop-up (and disappears when an option is selected) by clicking on the down arrow on the header
- Languages can be selected as follows:
- Ctrl+Shift + L will display the dialog if it is not currently shown, and you can:
- Select a language from the Recent Languages list by (a) clicking it, or (b) typing its number
- Select a language from the Installed Languages list by double clicking it (this adds also adds it to the Recent Languages list)
- Display Optional Languages by double clicking that header
- If you are writing in a file, Ctrl+Shift + L will give focus back to that dialog, so that you can:
- Type a number from 1 to 9 to select the Recent Language with that number
- Close the dialog by pressing Ctrl+Shift + L again (in other words, Ctrl+Shift+L twice in a row will close the dialog)
- You can still use Ctrl+Shift+C, H, G, etc. to change languages
- Languages selected with the various Ctrl+Shift shortcuts are automatically added to the Recent Languages list
- Extended alphabets (e.g., Coptic, Syriac, Ugaritic, and Akkadian) are now selected from this Language Dialog Bar, rather than from the Ctrl+Shift + X Extended Alphabets dialog (which has been removed)
- Ctrl+Shift+P is still used to select the Previous/Primary extended alphabet
- Note that the recent languages list now works differently—unless you select a different language from the Installed Languages list, the number of the Recent Language remains the same, so that you can simply choose Ctrl+Shift+L, and then type the (same) number to select that language
- New options have been added to the Retain Selection option (click on the button beside that option) to allow resetting of the default Roman alphabet when creating a new file, switching files, or going to the Action Line, Ibidem, or Orbis
- The Status Bar has been enhanced
- You can control which items are shown in the Status Bar (View, Status Bar)
- You can set the color of messages on the Status Bar (View, Status, Options), distinguishing, among other things, between:
- Prompts (when specific keyboard action is required or optional)
- A description of the current command (on which the cursor is positioned)—among other things, this lets you easily note your position to allow deleting of an existing command
- Error messages
- Descriptions of the currently selected menu item or toolbar button
- There is a new Search/Lookup Toolbar (by default, at the top right) to search a file, lookup items in Ibidem, or search an Orbis textbase
- Significant changes have been made to icons
- The existing icons have been (hopefully) improved:
- There should now be sharper distinctions between some that were not quite distinct enough
- The smaller version of the icons shown in the drop-down menus and the right-click toolbar should now be clearer
- Smaller (16x16) icons are now available for those who prefer them (View, Visual Appearance, Icons)
- Icons (that match those on the parallel Toolbar) have now been added to the buttons on the Framework/Outline Options Dialog Bar
- The blue icons are for those actions that operate on heading+body text units
- The yellow icons are for those actions that operate on or involve headings only
- The green icons are for those actions that operate on or involve body text only
- New keyboard help has been added
- A chart of all the keyboard assignments is now available under Help, Key Charts
- You can configure whether you want the keyboard shortcuts for cursor movement, deletion, selection, window scrolling, etc., displayed in the drop-down menus or not using Help, Configure Key Help
- Showing these keys in the menus is rather unusual, but on the other hand, as the dialog notes, Nota Bene is more oriented toward keyboard input than most other programs
- We’d be interested in hearing opinions as to whether we should show, or hide these, as the default
- You can now set screen background and foreground text again (Tools, Preferences, Screen Display)
- The Action Line has been enhanced
- It now has its own “action” icon and menu (the arrow beside it)
- It can be hidden, always displayed, or displayed as needed
- You can now specify whether the last item on the Action Line stack is shown when restarting NB
- It can be resized
- The “scoping” of paragraph-related commands can now be set more easily
- You can remove items from the stack, or change their order (click on the down arrow)
- The function of F9 can now be configured
- The Action Line Menu (Ctrl+Shift+Enter) lets you select an item from the list with the keyboard (pressing Enter copies the text to the Action Line, while F10 immediately implements the command)
- F9 can always clear the Action Line
- If not on the Action Line, the first press of F9 can go to the Action Line without clearing it; if pressed again, it clears the Action Line
- This second option means that a combination of F9 and Esc can replace the Ctrl+Shift+F10 key function
- Ctrl+Shift+Enter now shows the Action Line stack
- Limited number of commands saved in Action Line to 100 (otherwise, very long list meant delays in processing of commands)
Beta 17 also includes a very large number of fixes. The list below currently includes only items fixed in the first couple of weeks (we may itemize more of these as time permits). In any case, since beta 17 has been under development for almost two months, that means that the list below is incomplete, listing fewer than half of all changes. Note that it is also not carefully categorized, and certainly not prioritized.
- Lots of fixes have been made to RTF export, and some to import
- Block indented text, especially in academic style manual files, should now be handled properly (there is no longer any need to choose the Fix RTF option on the Format, Regularize Document dialog)
- Extraneous , , and commands should no longer be inserted
- Quite a few changes have been made to the cross-reference dialog bar:
- Enter now works to insert a label
- Labels inserted while in a note window will go into the label control on the note window, so that it will be properly inserted as the first thing in the note
- The last cross-reference option is remembered from session to session
- The list of existing labels should be properly populated even if the dialog bar is opened with a footnote window open
- Quite a few changes have been made to notes:
- Separator and wrap separators can now be edited again
- The sporadic problem that some people reported of not being able to cite within a note the first time (it works if repeated) has hopefully been addressed
- The issue of the cursor jumping back into the body text when editing in the note (or header/footer) windows when the Cross Referencing dialog is open has been resolved
- Labels (for cross referencing) added to open notes will now be saved when the note is closed, even if no other edits are made to the note
- You no longer get an error when inserting the first note in a file from the Action Line
- Fixed Run-Time Error 6 when moving between notes on high resolution or second monitors
- The mode mnemonics for double underline and strikethrough have been changed so they are more intelligible: Double underline is UD (not IN), and strikethrough is ST (not DN)
- You should now be able to open Hotkey links from within Ibidem fields (by double clicking) without getting errors
- Further fixes have been made to correct display problems on 120 DPI systems
- Fixed the problem a few users have reported when the printer driver was somehow not activated (after reinstalling NB, or installing some Windows or other system update), and characters were not properly output on screen (sometimes with subsequent crashes)
- Fixed problem of Error Showing Preview in some cases where Ibidem is opened in files without having a bibliographic style set up
- After going to Codes View, and returning to Page-Layout View, the original zoom setting should be reactivated
- After editing a header or footer, whether you accept the change, or cancel it, you are no longer taken back to the place in the file where the header/footer is defined (usually at the top), but remain at the place where the header/footer was opened
- Have hopefully fixed the issue where cursor sometimes jumps to the top of the file while editing elsewhere in the file
- A serious problem with selecting all (Ctrl+A) when margins are suppressed has been corrected
- You can now insert boolean operators into an Ibidem search
- Multilingual sorting should now work, affecting the word processor, Ibidem, and Orbis (it turns out that this code had never been converted, and so various oddities resulted from attempts to sort)
- Added options to make it clear to users that on standard-ratio display, there are advantages to floating the Dialog Bar, rather than docking it
- Files opened from File, 1-9 should now all show up as checked while the file is open (this didn’t always work)
- Changed the options for how opening/closing formatting commands are shown in Codes View (Tools, Preferences, Document Views, Set Options [button near bottom right, in Codes View category])
- Added Alt+J and Alt+Z options to the Dialog Bar menu; also give floating vs. docked options first time displayed
- Enabled Windows, Maximize All menu option even if only one window is open, so users can return to tab workspace after closing last open window if cascaded, tiled, or split
- Allowed colors of open/close formatting commands to be set (in Codes View) even in Scholar’s Workstation; also changed the colors to be a little more distinct
- The error beep on startup has been removed
- The color shortcut keys (Ctrl+7 and Ctrl+8) now reset the color to the default if pressed in a region in some other color (as they did in NB 9)
- Made sure message about conflict of math key shortcuts with shortcuts of certain dialogs (Alt + @/2 and #/3 conflict on the Search dialog, and those olus Alt + */8 conflict with the Spell Utilities dialog) is properly displayed
- Fixed “Dictionary Memory Allocation Error”
- You can now sort the table view in an Ibidem database after updating citations in a file
- The original NB style copy command should now work
- Fixed a crash in column tables
- The option to insert new framework/outline points at a lower or higher level should now finally work, even if you do so on the first element in the outline
- On-line library searching should now work with the older Archiva Pro without having to re-enter the access code everytime
- NB 10 overrides any selection of original (pre-NB9) spelling dictionaries (as can happen if NB 9 and 10 are installed in the same folder, and that option is selected in NB 9
- The Alignment and Spacing tabs when creating or editing a Framework/Outline are now properly enabled
- The problem some reported with odd background/foreground colors should be addressed
- The Save As problem with a selected block has been fixed
- Strikethrough and double underline should now work in the original NB mode style
- Normal (Ctrl+N) should now work in the Windows mode style
- The reversal of A+/A- (increase/decrease font size) has been addressed; the functions should also work on a single-character selection
- Settings made to the status bar settings should now be remembered across sessions
- One of the missing tab workspace options (the appearance of the tabs) has been reinstated (the other one is obsolete, and has been removed)
- You can now type “NB” (a non-breakable block) on the Action Line without typing in a number (for the number of lines)
- Fixed a number of issues when editing framework/outlines using the dialog -- the buttons on the Heading tab were not enabled, and the OK button would often not let you save changes
- Fixed some resizing errors in Ibidem on large, high-resolution monitors
- Fixed so “Page x [of y total]” values are not reversed if cursor happens to be in an right-to-left language region
- Maximize Windows is now always enabled on the Windows menu (so you can maximize all after closing the second-to-last window when you selected one of the Cascade, Tile, or Split options)
- Fixed a spurious “function requires one number” error that some experienced when exiting NB
- Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn now work again to move through previous and next notes, headers, footers, etc. (when the appropriate note editing window is open)
- Many changes have been to Orbis
- The file pane on Orbis has been enhanced
- The colors indicating file status have been changed
- The status of the selected style is now indicated in a Status box
- A drop-down file-status key can now be displayed
- “Removed” files (files manually added, and then excluded) are distinguished from “Excluded” files (files part of selected file type, but excluded)
- You can now switch alphabets in the Orbis search line
- Orbis controls should now be properly positioned on 120 DPI system (many of these were actually inaccessible on earlier releases)
- You can build an Orbis textbase including all files of a specified type, in all subfolders, even if no files that match the designated type are present in the parent (top-level) folder
- Major keyboard changes
- All keyboard options are now (optionally) shown in menus
- Removed a few obsolete assignments
- Added Ctrl + NumPad - and + as “synonyms” for [ and ] (which had a lot of directional functions)
While major strides have been made in beta 17, some bugs remain. These include some more significant ones in Ibidem and Orbis, and a fair number of minor ones. But now that the interface is finalized, we should be able to fix these quite quickly (if the experience of the past few weeks is any indication, we can knock off a couple dozen a day).
If you have reported a bug before, and you do not find it fixed in this beta, you do not need to worry; you also do not need to report it to us again. All these bugs are in our to-do list, and we expect to fix these remaining issues in short order going forward. The time to report them to us is if they are not in the next beta.

Notes on Beta Release 16
Beta 16 includes a very large number of fixes. But first, some preliminary notes:
- A number of users started reporting an “error 380,” followed by exit of NB, related to display of the Outline Navigation Bar, very soon after beta 15 was released. We immediately corrected this, and sent a link to the corrected version to all users who wrote us about this problem. We’ve just now discovered that we had not actually updated the version posted on the web with this same fix, so that rather than this being an issue that only a small number of people encountered, it actually could potentially have been an issue for everybody with beta 15 (more precisely, for those who used the Outline Navigation Bar on large screen systems). If you had this problem, we certainly hope that you wrote to us so that we could have provided a quick fix, rather than just suffering in silence. Either way, our sincere apologies to those of you who ran into this problem.
- We have mentioned to a few people that we intended to include support for the extended alphabets in beta 16. But because of the realization described in the previous point, we felt that we needed to post the update immediately, even before the new install was finished. We will have this for beta 17 (which will follow much more quickly after beta 16 than beta 16 did after beta 15). But if you need support for the extended languages immediately, please let us know, and we can give you instructions on how to install them.
|
- Revisions to NB Help include a fully updated Ibidem tutorial. A PDF copy of the tutorial is available by clicking Help, Ibidem Tutorial and it is also available on our web page.
- Some formatting issues have been corrected:
- The option to output the name of the current file in headers and footers, or elsewhere (VA$FP ) should now work in printed documents (it previously only worked on screen)
- Strikethrough and double underline should now work, both for typing new text, and changing the format of existing text
- It should now work to have styles which output text (such as ) in wrapped paragraphs, rather than just at the beginning of the paragraph (previously, if the Use Style was at the end or the beginning of the line, it would output some garbage, and refuse to let you move past, or even print, that page)
- When inserting citation settings into the file, note formatting is also set up (if none was already present)
- The bug in which page numbers would increment by 64,000 or so (very odd, it is true) at the begining of some chapters has been fixed
- Centered and right aligned tabs should now work (previously, they would only work on the first tab setting)
- A number of language-related issues should now be fixed
- The crash that some experienced with the German dictionary active should hopefully now be resolved
- Fixed reversal of current page number values on status line in Hebrew or Arabic regions
- Justified Hebrew text should now print properly, whether to an actual printer or to a PDF driver (it was also correct on screen)
- Selections with F2, ..., F2 are no longer reset as you move through a file when the language setting was to automatically adjust language and keyboard to the context language
- Various changes have been made to general editing:
- Editing/typing, and the program in general, should now work faster
- You should now be able to select a “column” block (F2, F2, then F2 at end) and then press Del without crashing
- You should now be able to select a “column” block (F2, F2, then F2 at end) and then have Ctrl+X actually delete it (rather than leaving it untouched)
- Cursor should now stay in note when citing (rather than returning to the main window)
- Some changes have been made in search/replace:
- The failure to have changes made in notes that were opened during a Search/Replace operation has been addressed
- The subsequent failure for searches to work after making edits in notes has also been corrected
- You can now find search strings even if the cursor is already positioned at the beginning of that string
- This also means that you can now find search strings that are at the very top of the file
- Further changes have been made to the annotation dialog bar
- Annotation dialog remembers last annotation
- The annotation will no longer be cleared automatically when you select a different annotation type
- When the annotation is cleared (using the Clear button, or in other cases where the existing annotation needs to be replaced by another one), the Restore Typed button should now be enabled (to allow you to retrieve the previous content)
- Changes have been made to the Extended Clipboard
- You can now double click to insert an item from the extended clipboard into a file (single click selects the item to display the previews in the dialog bar)
- Changes made to when annotations are saved (for session vs. between sessions) should now take effect in the current session
- When items are inserted into the file, the cursor will be positioned at the end of the insert, rather than at the beginning
- The bug whereby sometimes the number of annotations to save is unexpectedly set to 0 (thus disabling the Extended Clipboard) has been fixed
- Additional work has been done on Frameworks/Outlines:
- The issue of outlines seemingly being truncated (until you used Shift+Esc, or typed some more text) has been corrected
- You should now be able to save custom framework/outline format to the framework/outline library
- The cursor should be properly positioned in the title of the first element when first inserting a framework/outline
- The defaults for the Toolbar/Options bar no longer keep the chosen bar open when switching to a file without a framework/outline, and the Navigation bar is no longer turned on by default (you can change these settings, of course)
- More work has been done to try to insure that newly inserted elements go after the current one, and that the cursor is properly positioned when first inserting a framework/outline
- A new “Insert Preliminary Text” option has been added to the Options Bar to allow you to insert a blank line (to add some heading, running headers/footers, etc.) before any framework/outline that is defined at the beginning of the file (the cursor is configured to prevent typing anywhere other than in the heading/body text, making it difficult to get in “front” of the outline definition (without switching to Codes View); note that this option is NOT on the corresponding Framework/Outline Toolbar
- * A problem with the preliminary version of beta 12 (only up for a day) in which going to Codes View when a dialog bar was displayed caused the program to exit has been fixed
- * Ibidem should now longer give an error when resizing on 27" monitors
- Various fixes have been made to the resizing of Dialog Bar
- A long-standing bug (even in NB 9, it turns out) where occasionally (most of the time this works fine) note-taking files created in Ibidem do not automatically include the information that lets Orbis link such files back to Ibidem has been corrected (if an existing file does not contain such a link, opening it from within Ibidem should automatically add that link)
- Going to next or previous note when a note window is open should no longer give you the false error that there are no more notes
- If a file shrinks in size, the deleted text (the removal of which makes the file smaller) that is kept during editing is now abandoned after the file is saved and closed, so that the disk size of the file matches its actual size
- If trying to insert a graphic that does not exist, or if calling a file that has a link to a non-existent graphic, the program should only complain once, rather than dozens of times, and shouldn’t subsequently crash
- The Go command should now always move past embedded images/objects
- Deletes in redlining mode no longer only delete up to the next mode or other redline command, even when the selected block extends beyond that
- A drawing problem, in which line numbers residues from the previous screen persisted as you paged through a file, has been fixed
- Tabula is now always shown as an option (making it possible to install it if you have licensed it), even without the biblical texts being installed
- A problem with creating an RTF file from a file with dozens of Column Table commands has been addressed
- Re-added the NB 10 icon to NB10ED module
- Default spellers not unselected after update (previously, GENERAL.SPL was loaded as the default speller on each program update)
- Fixed U of Toronto P entry in Ibidem (was incorrect for over a dozen years!)
- After File, Save As, cursor remains at current position
- Phrase 9 is no longer overwritten when editing frameworks/outlines
- Fixed “error 380” that some experienced in various contexts (this was related to new settings for the Outline Navigation bar)
- The right click pop up menu on hyperlinks/hotkeys should now work even if the description is a word that is not recognized by the speller (in beta 15, the pop up for a flagged word override the other pop up)
- Fixed “button 8” problems when citing from Ibidem on systems with multiple or high resolution monitors
- Fixed some issues relating to F1 after using F5 and Shift+Alt+F5
- Fixed so F3 (hopefully) works even though the InfoTip is up
|
Notes on Beta Release 15
Among other changes/fixes in beta 15 are the following:
- * The version number should now show up correctly after updating (the issue was that manual updates done through this web page, as opposed to auto updates when notified upon starting, often did not update the version number properly)
- An updated version of NB Help is included. This should include documentation on all features, except the New Orbis (a link to an updated web page that describes the changes in Orbis is provided)
- A problem starting NB if the program was installed in a folder location that had spaces in the full path name has been corrected
- JPEG images should now be retained when files that contain them are opened as part of a manuscript file
- The rare and very strange bug that half a dozen or a dozen people encountered with Home going to the top of the file when pressed on certain lines has been corrected
- Changes made when inserting or editing headers/footers should now take effect in the document immediately, rather than requiring recomposing
- A few changes have been made in Ibidem:
- Clicking on Ibidem on the Task Bar, or pressing F7 when Ibidem does not have focus, should now bring Ibidem to the fore immediately (it should now longer require multiple clicks and/or key presses)
- F7, followed by Ctrl+Shift+F7 to create a new record, no longer closes Ibidem, and reopening it no longer causes a crash
- F7 no longer acts like a toggle (previously, if Ibidem had focus, F7 would close it)
- There should be less flashing when inserting citations into notes
- Shortcut keys in Ibidem to insert contents of preview into file no longer double the insertion
- A problem with the “et al.” settings in Ibidem has been corrected (the values were reversed in the dialog — the settings worked properly unless you went to the dialog to edit them)
- In earlier versions of Ibidem, if the same person was both the author of a work, and the secondary contributor to another work (for example, an editor, translator, etc.), so that a role appeared in the author field (e.g., as ), works by that person were treated as the work of two authors when disambiguating shortened forms (that is, the author’s first name and/or initials were added as though there were two people with the same last name [of course, the first names were also identical]), in part because some styles required that the primary works precede any secondary works by that author in the bibliography/reference list, thus requiring that they be treated in some respects as works be distinct authors); this has now been changed so that no disambiguation occurs for in-text citations
- * Various issues have been addressed in the Alt+Ins dialog (to allow editing of longer fields)
- * The dialog only comes up once
- * Word-wrapping now works in the dialog
- * The cursor no longer returns to overstrike mode when returning to the field after closing the dialog
- Some changes have been made in Archiva:
- Archiva Library search from within Ibidem now properly checks for an installed Archiva before showing the search dialog (which was only partially shown in any case earlier)
- The default fields and tooltips for the Archiva On-Line Library search are now in synch
- Archiva searches of libraries that use port 210 (this is the port used by lots of libraries) should now work again
- Tooltips in Archiva should now be positioned properly
- Changes have been made to Dialog Bars:
- Some bugs in resizing the Framework/Outline Navigation dialog have been fixed
- The Framework/Outline Navigation dialog (and only this dialog) can now be resized when it is floated
- The last position of “floated” dialog bars (i.e., when you use Alt+J to “jettison” them) is now remembered the next time they are floated
- Fixed problem where selecting an academic style manual format from the File, New dialog did not fill in user-specific information properly
- Further fixes have been made to frameworks/outlines:
- Entering new headings (whether auto enter is on or off) should be faster, more reliable (always going in the correct place [we fixed some remaining issues where the new element skipped the next element], and aesthetically cleaner
- Double clicking should now go to the proper section (in the main file) even when elements are collapsed in the framework/outline Navigation pane
- After closing a note window, the cursor will be positioned after the note, rather than before it
- F3 should now work consistently to open and close notes (and other elements)
- The right click menu options on Hyperlinks/hotkeys should now work
- Some changes have been made to Orbis:
- When highlight colors are changed in Orbis, they should now be preserved (and moving to next or previous search term in a matching entry, which depended on this setting, should now always work)
- * The Orbis highlighting (on new installs) has been fixed
- The Orbis boolean operators (on the Search Pane) now work
- Further fixes have been made to annotations:
- The Go to Selected option should now work reliably
- When selecting a different kind of annotation, the annotation text box is now cleared (you can restore what was there before this change by clicking Restore Typed)
- A Clear button has been added to clear the annotation text box
- The last annotation type is remembered, and will be selected when your next reopen the dialog
- “LD ” now works on the command line
- Fixed bad value of column counter (bottom right of status line) that results from pressing, and then releasing, Ctrl
- Clicking the special character icons in the Find/Replace dialog now no longer prevent you from using Enter to enter a paragraph in the document
- Some issues addressed in beta 13 and 14 that were omitted from this change log are noted here:
- User-assigned special character insertion using Alt+F5 has been improved (you can now use Alt+ F5, followed by the character, as previously; Alt+F5, followed by F1, now displays the dialog again; when the dialog is displayed, double clicking on the desired key works again)

Notes on Beta Release 14
- A variety of changes have been made to file handling:
- Drag and drop of files into Nota Bene is now working
- To open the file in Nota Bene, drop it onto the menu bar, or some other toolbar (i.e., some place other than the document area)
- You can drag in NB and text files (anything that will go in properly even if not converted)
- No file conversion will be activated (this is also how NB 9 worked)
- You cannot drop files into the document area
- If version 9, you could drag in NB or text files, and have them become embedded packages (this let you click on them, and then launch that other file), but this is not supported in NB 10
- * The error (introduced in preliminary versions of beta 14) that results when NB is not open, and a non-NB-for-Windows format file (even if the extension is .NB) is doubled clicked in Explorer, etc., to open that file, and NB with it, has now been fixed
- The File, Save As dialog on XP now handles extensions properly (as has the Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8 dialog)
- Fixed problem with long filenames in Log and Resume files
- Fixed problem with long filenames in the Alt+D Document Dialog Bar
- Custom templates should now work in the File, New dialog
- The tooltip for the first file in the Tab Workspace should now be correct
- If a file from the File, 1-9 list is selected, but it cannot be opened, it will no longer be checked as though it were open
- Added an option to allow use of XP File Open/Save As dialog instead of the Vista/Windows 7/Windows 8 common dialog
- Only the former is an option on XP
- The former is VERY STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for WINE (see below)
- Changes have been made for WINE:
- WINE now uses the XP common file dialog (see above) -- this is much better looking, and much more functional, than the Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 version that used to be the default
- Among other things, this means that file extensions should be handled better
- The lockup on various options on the Format menu (especially the Page Layout option) has been fixed
- Some Ibidem issues have been addressed:
- Shift+F1 in Ibidem (to redisplay the entire database when a subset is active) no longer also invokes Help
- Deletion of citations from Inspect dialog now works without errors
- The flashing when clicking on the first field in a newly selected Ibidem record has been removed
- Removed obsolete Compact Index and Compact Data file options from Ibidem
- Some further changes have been made to Frameworks/Outlines:
- * Auto Enter, and inserting of elements at any level, should now work properly in outlines which have only headings, and no body text
- * The Options Bar is now properly cleared when switching to a file without a Framework/Outline (if it is not set to remain open in all files)
- A few cases where the auto-enter toggle (turning on whether Enter or Ctrl+Alt+Enter starts a new outline point) didn’t work have been corrected
- Fixed a problem (a) if the framework/outline navigation dialog bar is displayed, but (b) there is no framework/outline in the active file, and (c) Enter is pressed (the cursor jumps back to the end of the previous line, although when you type text, it goes in at the correct place, on the new line)
- Fixed further issues when inserting new elements in framework/outline — in some instances, the new point was not going after the current point
- You should now be able to suppress automatic display of both the Framework/Outline Toolbar and the Options Bar
- Fixed problem of navigation bar not appearing if NB on second monitor
- Fixed some issues with frameworks/outlines that had only headings/titles, and no body text
- Some note issues have been addressed:
- The focus problem in notes (the cursor would jump back into the main file, and edits would take effect there) when the Navigation Bar was open has been fixed
- The Windows style print modes/styles should now work in notes, even after clicking in note with the mouse
- Further changes have been made to annotations:
- The annotation shortcut keys (Ctrl+Shift+Alt + F1-F9) should work again
- The data in the Annotation Dialog should now be updated more appropriately (for example, if clicking on an annotation in the file with the mouse), but also less frequently (it will not be updated if not necessary)
- The loop that caused a lockup (repeated displaying of the same annotation) should now be fixed
- Some changes have been made in Orbis:
- Fixed Orbis entry display for European users (invalid Text Width [TW] commands were being inserted into the entry)
- The special @ and # keywords should now display properly in the Orbis Search Pane
- The keys at the bottom of the Entry Pane that move to the next and previous match in the displayed entries should now work
- Some changes have been made to the dialog bars:
- The floating Dialog Bar is no longer reset (as in beta 13) if you select a different Dialog Bar
- Floating Dialog Bars should now we sized to match the controls on the specific dialog, rather than being unnecessarily tall
- * Various issues with message boxes have been addressed:
- If a message box is displayed, you will need to respond to it before proceeding (previously, you could click back into NB, Ibidem, Orbis, etc., and continue working; these unclosed message boxes could create problems later)
- Messages should now be centered on the parent form better
- * JPEG images smaller than the frame no longer disappear (like other embedded objects, such as bitmaps, they will display at their full width, stretching outside the frame until you scale them)
- The currently selected text is now shown in various phrase library dialogs (Alt+F1, Alt+F2)
- Some changes have been made to Format, Regularize Document, Remove, to make sure that even contiguous commands are removed
- Some minor (mostly aesthetic) changes have been made to the GoTo Dialog Bar
- Ctrl+Alt+Enter has been re-enabled (as in NB9) to move to the next “prompt” in template files (such as the predefined letter formats accessed via File, New)
- The Action Line Stack should now be properly saved between sessions
- A number of issues with editing images/objects (for example, the width not being properly reset when changing from auto to manual width, and back and forth, and some edits not being saved back to the file) have been fixed
- The pop-up InfoTips should now more consistently disappear when first character typed (or Esc key pressed)

Notes on Beta Release 13
Beta 13 includes lots of changes:
- Major changes have been made to the Frameworks/Outlines interface
- The primary change is that an Options Bar and a dedicated Framework/Outline Toolbar have been provided
- * The Options Bar should now be wide enough on systems which use Large Fonts
- A description of all of these changes would take many bulleted points, but because our hope is that the interface will now be much more intuitive, we’d like to see if these changes can be used without further explanation
If this hope turns out to be misguided, please let us know.
- A bug in suppressing of headings in framework/outlines, where counter settings were not properly reset when reversed, has been fixed
- * The bug with Shift + Enter (introduced in an early beta 13) has been fixed
- Lots of changes have been made to the Framework/Outline: Navigate/View option (Alt+N):
- It has been made more prominent in framework/outline menus, and otherwise more closely linked to frameworks/outlines
- New options have been added to exclude auto updating of frameworks/outlines in manuscript files, or in files larger than a specified size
- Auto updating is now performed on more operations (inserting new elements, changing the title of an existing element, deleting text with elements, copying in text with elements, undoing, etc.); in cases where auto updating does not occur automatically, you can easily manually update using Alt+N
- There should be significantly less flashing as the outline view is updated
- Updating should be faster in many contexts
- In Navigate Framework/Outline Bar, double clicking should now go to the correct location even if its heading/title is used in another framework/outline element
- You can choose to have the Framework/Outline: Navigate/View option automatically open/close based on the file status (select this option using the drop-arrow from the new Options Bar, or the configure button on the Framework/Outline Toolbar)
- Labels in headings are shown as an arrow at the beginning of the outline text (making it easy to see if a heading has been given a label for cross referencing)
- Changes have been made in the icons:
- You can select the desired icon style using View, Visual Appearance, Icons:
- Modern I (the new default), with new “symbolic” file-management icons — these should now be easier to distinguish (as to their functions), although in keeping with the symbolic style of the icons in general, they are still rather untraditional
- Modern II — the original NB 10 file-management icons
- Traditional — a more traditional set of icons (for file management, fonts, clipboard options, and some formatting commands)
- In addition, we have now provided a way for a more global customization of icons, with a set of user-customized icon files
- There are three icon files:
- ...24x24.BMP (main icon file)
- ...24x24E.BMP (mostly for command/note window)
- ...24x24X.BMP (mostly for Orbis and eventually Ibidem)
- The shipping icon files are all in the ICONS folder under the NB 10 folder, with the ... replaced as follows:
- NB for Modern I (so NB24x24.BMP, etc.)
- MOD for Modern II (so MOD24x24.BMP, etc.)
- ALT for Traditional (so ALT24x24.BMP, etc.)
- To edit these icons:
- Copy the set of icons you would like to use as your starting point (see above), and paste the group into the ..\USERS\DEFAULT folder, renaming them so the prefix (NB, MOD, ALT) is replaced by USER1-, USER2-, USER3-, etc. (note the hyphen)
- Edit these files using a program such as Paint (which lets you edit BMP files)
- Note that currently we only support 24x24 icons (we intend to eventually — but after NB 10 — to support 16x16 format as well)
- The color in the top left pixel is the background color for all the icons
- There is currently no documentation describing what each icon in the current files is used for — you will need to match them up using the existing toolbars
- Many of the icons in the current files are not yet used
- This customization option is provided in lieu of the current icon-by-icon editing options, which are not retained from session to session (this will not be fixed in the final NB 10)
- A variety of changes have been made to basic file management:
- When NB is not running, you should now be able to double click NB files (i.e., those already in NB format) in My Computer (and other sources which work similarly) and properly start NB and open the file, without crashing or locking up
- Save As (including to RTF, as well as other formats) should now work under WINE, as should the various File, Open options
- When using the File, Open dialog, if a file’s attributes are set to be read-only, you will be given the option to change this read-only status, and make the file fully editable, so that it will open as a regular file (if you lack the proper permissions to do so, a message will be displayed, and the file will be opened in read-only mode)
- A fix has been made to prevent crashing when opening files that have a file-end character as their first character
- New defaults have been chosen for the Tools, Preferences, Directory/Folder Default (File > Open / Save As settings, and these now work better
- When using the File, Open dialog from other dialogs to locate specific kinds of files (phrase library files, spelling dictionary files, etc.), the dialog will now open to the default folder for those kinds of files, and show the specific file types
- A new File Options entry has been added to the File menu
- The cross-file search (Ctrl+F) can now be accessed from this menu
- An interface has been added to the long-standing feature (available in NB for over a generation) that enables you to specify a group of files (based on their type, or extension) in a particular folder, and then open them in sequence
- You first specify the Set Open File Sequence, which also calls the first file in the sequence
- You then open successive ones using the Ctrl+Shift+F9 which has always been on the NB keyboard, and, in NB 10, on the File menu (if you make edits to the currently open file in that sequence, it will ask whether you want to save or abandon changes before calling the next one)
- Batch conversion has now been implemented
- Some minor changes have been made
- This option has been moved from the Tools menu to this new File Options submenu
- * We have made a change to how printer drivers are loaded which we hope will address the issue that a few people have reported of the printer driver from the last session not being reactivated when NB is restarted after quitting
- A change has been made to how pasting works — if there is a selected block when you paste, that block will be replaced by the pasted text, as in other Windows programs unless you select the original NB method of retaining it (Tools, Preferences, Clipboard)
- The error beep on the first search (from the Search Dialog Bar) has been corrected
- The right click spell dialog should be a little clearer -- there is a line separating the “accept” word options and the “replace pair” options to make it less confusing
- * Changes have been made to the Annotations Dialog Bar:
- * Hopefully the error that some have reported (which we have unfortunately never been able to reproduce) saying that there is no annotation to insert has been corrected
- * When clicking on an annotation in a file with the mouse, or moving the cursor over an annotation, the annotation text box should now be automatically updated (with the text of the annotation in the file which has been selected)
- * If this auto-updating overwrites an annotation that you had typed in the text box, you can retrieve that using the Restore Typed button
- * When showing the Annotation Dialog Bar, you should now be able to copy text into it right away, without first typing text into it
- * In general, the controls should now be updated better to reflect their status (whether you can edit, delete, etc.)
- A variety of changes have been made to notes:
- When trying to add a note in a file in which notes are not yet defined, after doing so (in the Note Format dialog), you are returned to the place where you wanted to add a note, and a note is opened
- During this process, the preliminary message about needing to set the note format has been removed (it appears on the dialog proper)
- A long-standing bug when adding notes to a file in which note format was not yet set up has been fixed (this sometimes had the effect of corrupting the first page of the file)
- Another long-standing bug (dating back to the very first Windows version), where there was sometimes a discrepancy between the format of the note in the file, the text shown in the preview, and the settings in the Layout and Font dialogs used to modify note settings, has been fixed (as far as we know, this was only pointed out to us a few weeks ago for the first time)
- You can now enter a new paragraph in footnotes again (this bug was introduced in beta 12)
- A new icon for block indents (Shift+Enter) has been added to the Formats Toolbar
- The failure of keyboard shortcuts to not show and/or work in new installs has been fixed
- Numerous changes have been made to Orbis, among which the most prominent are:
- The Instant Search option on the main Nota Bene File menu has now been incorporated
- The indexer/updater has been more closely linked into the program:
- * The current up-to-date status of a textbase is now visible as a yellow “warning” icon (a circle with two rotating arrows); this is updated when:
- * You check the update status (with Alt+C)
- * The results of a search show files with matches have been edited or removed
- * In either case, you can click this icon to update the textbase
- * After a textbase has been updated, the yellow “warning” icon turns to green so tht you can:
- * Open the updated indexes to search the newer textbase (click the icon)
- * Alternatively, you can continue to search the existing version
- * You can choose (use File, Preferences in Orbis, or Tools, Preferences, Orbis in NB proper) how to open a textbase:
- * Open without checking update status
- * Check whether the textbase needs updating
- * And if it does, then update it automatically
- * You also have the option to exclude any checking process (even if this is otherwise selected) when opening Orbis itself (unless you change this, this process also usually opens the last active textbase), since checking could take another three or four seconds which you might want to skip when doing a lookup of a word in a file
- * The indexer status is now incorporated into either the main Nota Bene, or the main Orbis, windows, as appropriate
- * In either case, an updated thermometer shows at the bottom
- * Further, you can choose to have the indexer/updater automatically close when finished, or leave it open to confirm (see the two Preferences options above)
- * The textbases status is now shown on the status bar (unless updating is required), rather than a message box, so you don’t need to click OK to dismiss that message
- * If you choose to skip files identified as binary when creating a textbase, those files will be removed from the textbase list, so that they will not cause false messages about the textbase needing to be updated
- Changes have been made to the search bar:
- The font size has been increased
- The last search string should now usually be shown after opeing a next textbase, updating the existing one, etec.
- The current search string is highlighted (so that it can easily be replaced as you type a new string) when the search box gets focus (among other options, Esc clears the highlighting)
- * You can now change the zoom size of the full-text entry pane without the right side of the text being invisible off to the right
- * You can now choose to override the display of the message bar that warns about the impact of changes made to files opened from Orbis (use Files, Preferences in Orbis [or Tools, Preferences, Orbis in NB proper])
- * Changes have been made to the “Nexus” Control Center:
- * The name and icon have been changed (it is a control center, not really a “Home”)
- * The date the textbase was created, the date last updated, and the day last accessed
- * The number of times the index has been updated (since the last creation or rebuild) is not saved (this is not terribly significant — it does not suggest that a rebuild is necessary)
- * You can now rename textbases
- * When you remove textbases:
- * The management files are now also deleted, rather than just the name of the textbase being removed from the list
- * You are given the option of also removing any management files from textbases earlier removed from the list, for which the files were not deleted (you will be prompted for each such set of files)
- * Changes have been made to the Add/Remove dialog:
- * The help panel has been simplified, made easier to turn on/off, and made dockable
- * Some unneeded controls have been removed
- * You can now switch in and out of Codes View, and turn markers on and off, in the search bar and in the entry display
- * Messages are now displayed in different colors on the status line:
- * Textbase creation/updating status is in green
- * Search messages remain in blue (now a lighter blue)
- * Filenames of regular files are shown in light yellow (to make the text a little more visible)
- * Filenames of files that have been modified remain in red (but now a lighter shade)
- Other messages (tooltips for options shown in the menus, etc.) remain “uncolored”
- Tabula has now been incorporated
- Use existing activation code
- For those with biblical texts, the biblical text search ranges should now work
- Changes have been made to Ibidem:
- The bug where the preview text was pasted into an Ibidem field, instead of what was previously on the clipboard, has been fixed
- A new Preview Format option has been added to the Tools menu to help you identify a style that outputs citations in the format you need
- This simple popup lets you scroll through Ibidem’s large number of styles until you find one that formats the results in the way that you need
- Since formatting varies depending on the type of work, you can select a different record in the open Ibidem database, and the preview will show how the selected style formats that kind of record
- Orbis should now automatically find the proper Ibidem database for matches retrieved from note-taking files, even if the database referred to by that note-taking file has been moved
- When changing the location of an already active Ibidem database, after having moved it (File, Maintain, Update Location), you are given the option to automatically also adjust the location of the note-taking files
- When you add an existing database (not currently present on the Ibidem menu) using New, Add Existing, you will be given the option to go directly to the File, View Note-Taking Files to update the location of the note-taking files if necessary
- When adding an Ibidem database (using New, Add Existing), a new record is now longer added automatically
- If you try to open a database that remains in the Ibidem pick list, but the database has been moved or deleted, a more appropriate error is displayed
- When opening an Ibidem note-taking file, and then closing it, NB no longer treats that file as edited (unless you actually edit it)
- The insert/overstrike functions that have always existed in Nota Bene have been given an interface
- These options are in part provided because Macs (on which people seem to be having success running under WINE) don’t have an Insert key
- There are two overstrike options:
- Character overstrike (the default overstrike mode) — all characters, including tabs and spaces, are overstruck/replaced (but paragraph breaks are never overstruck)
- Word overstrike — overstriking stops at spaces and tabs; it resumes again when you move on top of characters
- The last selected overstrike option is remembered from session to session
- Selecting an overstrike style does not switch to overstrike mode, but instead only sets up the overstrike mode used when you next toggle to overstrike
- The toggle insert key (Ins) toggles between insert mode and the last selected overstrike style
- The Select Column option and its keyboard shortcut has been added to the Edit, Select menu
- Changes have been made to Archiva:
- The options on the SysTray Archiva should now work
- A conflict between NB 9 Archiva and NB 10 (which sometimes caused Archiva not to work on such systems) has been resolved
- Major changes have also been made to Frames and images/objects:
- JPEG images can now be embedded (just like BMP files)
- * JPEG images should now look fine on screen (unlike what was the case in any early version of beta 13)
- Note that unless you have a JPEG server (some higher end graphics program that serves this purpose), you cannot link to a JPEG file, but can only embed it (this should not be a serious impediment, since linking is important when the object being inserted changes — as in a spreadsheet or database —, and the source program needs to update the object, something that is generally not necessary with pictures, which normally remain static)
- The Frame Dialog Bar now is displayed only when in an active Frame-editing window
- Images (JPG, BMP, etc.) inserted into a frame will now be auto sized—if they are too wide to fit the maximum page width, they will be scaled (not cropped) to fit inside that maximum page width
- The Replace options should now work in the cross-file search menu
- The Print Status dialog has been widened so that you can see the full filename of the file being printed
- The annoying (but non-fatal) error when opening log files that contain filenames with spaces has been corrected
- If you are in Codes View, and try to Print, NB will automatically switch to Page-Layout View (without doing so, some options on the dialog don’t work properly)
- The icons/options for Shift+F3 are improved to better indicate the different functions depending on the active view (in NB 10, Shift+F3 toggles framework markers on/off if in Page Layout View, but cycles through the various ways of showing commands in Draft View)
- A few enhanced options partially implemented in the hope that they could make it into NB 10 (but never promised for it) have been removed (hopefully to reappear in later versions), including:
- The scoping options (whether the selected formatting option will be applied to the entire file, to the current paragraph, starting at the cursor, etc. ) on the right click mini toolbar
- The extensions to the Action Line (on the drop-down panel accessed by clicking the down-arrow [now removed] that was to the left of the Action Line)
- The assignment of Shift+F10 and F10 to work as Find Previous/Find Next (based on one of the now removed Action Line options); the left and right arrow icons for these functions (previously to the right of the Action Line) have also been removed

Notes on Beta Release 12
The following features have now been implemented:
- Lots of changes have been made in Frameworks/Outlines:
- Some major keyboard reassignments have been made in order to (a) provide better mnemonics/descriptions, (b) group similar items closer together, and/or (c) simplify keystrokes (our apologies if this affects finger memory!):
- The Outline Bar (Alt+O) has been renamed Framework/Outlines: Navigate/View, and assigned to Alt+N (again, our apologies to those who will at least initially find it frustrating to press Alt+O to get the Outline Bar and instead get what used to be the “Global” Framework/Outline dialog bar accessed with Alt+G)
- The Global Framework/Outline option (Alt+G) has been renamed Framework/Outlines: Options/Controls, and assigned to Alt+O (which used to give the Outline Bar)
- The option to insert a new heading at the cursor position (thus breaking the current body text into two sections, with the text after the cursor becoming the body text of the new heading, and the text preceding the cursor becoming the body text of the previous heading) has been assigned to Ctrl+Ins
- Note that Ctrl+Ins has context specific functions, evaluated in the following order: (1) inserts page numbers if in Ibidem note-taking file; (2) inserts new rows if in column tables; (3) inserts new heading at the cursor in frameworks/outlines
- You can use the original Ctrl+Shift+Alt+Ins if you want to force a new header in files where a different context with a higher priority would otherwise govern the function of Ctrl+Ins
- When inserting a new outline point, you can promote/demote (outdent/indent) using Home or End
(without Ctrl+Alt) if done so before other operations/edit, thus making it much simpler to change levels of newly inserted points (thereafter, you will continue to need to use Ctrl+Alt)
- Changes have been made to the Framework/Outline: Options/Controls dialog bar accessed with Alt +O (this used to be the Global Framework/Outline Dialog Bar [Alt + G])
- In the Framework/Outline: Navigate/View dialog bar (now Alt+N; previously Alt+O), text of the headings should no longer be truncated (this mostly affected cases where the text was in Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, etc.)
- The Framework/Outline Elements menu under Edit, Insert, and after right clicking have all been substantially reorganized
- All these options should be active/enabled in files with frameworks/outlines (previously they were sometimes initially grayed out)
- Auto Enter mode is turned on by default when options are chosen under Format, Framework/Outline (Auto Enter mode is off by default when using Format, Style Manuals)
- When selecting an outline under Format, Framework/Outline, by default the first outline point is inserted into the file automatically
- To suppress this, click the down arrow to the right of the Insert button, and uncheck that option
- You should now only be able to type in the title area or the body text region (previously, you could unwittingly insert something in the counter area, depending on where the cursor happened to be positioned [the counter format is defined in the style, and must be modified there])
- You should no longer get a dialog saying that style definitions for framework/outlines are not present when pasting sections containing framework/outline elements within the same file, or between files
- *The Framework/Outline: Navigate/View dialog bar has been enhanced:
- *You can now select the option to Auto Update the outline on a mouse click, or as you type (on a timer) by selecting those options from the Configure panel (click on the wrench and screwdriver icon)
- *You can temporarily turn off these automatic modes by unchecking the Auto Update option at the top of the main panel
- *The outline view is automatically updated as you insert outline points
- *Some of these update options simply modify the current outline element; if for any reason things get out of synch, you can do a full refresh of the outline by pressing Alt+N again
- *Some additional changes (including code to handle some unusual cases) will be implemented shortly
- *The Action Tips for Frameworks/Outlines now mention the two Framework/Outline Dialog Bars more prominently
- Changes have been made to the Find/Replace dialog bar (Ctrl+F):
- Pressing Ctrl+F will leave the cursor in the Find box
- The previous search term will be redisplayed, and highlighted, and thus will be replaced if you type some other character (unless you first move the cursor)
- Tab will move from the Find to the Replace box; Shift+Tab will return to the Find box
- *The following changes have been made to shortcuts:
- *Because the various Alt key combinations are used to access the menus and other Dialog Bars, these traditional mnemonics are not available for shortcuts within a particular Dialog Bar (they work in regular dialog boxes because those other dialogs momentarily take full control, disabling access to other menus or dialogs; the problem arises only when a Dialog Bar is open that does not restrict actions to that Dialog Bar, but instead let you continue to invoke other menus , dialogs, or Dialog bars
- *In NB 10, the Alt + number keys (not the function keys) serve as shortcuts in active dialog bars
- *In the reworked Find/Replace dialog, these shortcuts are noted on the tooltips of the relevant controls; you can also choose to display them directly on the dialog by checking the option at the bottom of the options panel
- *Note that it appears that for some reason these do not work when the Find/Replace dialog is in cross-file search mode (we’ll fix this, of course)
- We intend to implement these, as appropriate, on other dialog bars
- Note that this means that the Alt + number keys are context-specific -- their function depends on which Dialog Bar is active
- Cross-file searching should now (finally!) work:
- All searches are now made in Codes View — not only is this much faster, and lets you search within embedded elements, this is the only way to ensure that binary (non-text) files don’t crash the system
- Certain non-text files are automatically skipped (.EXE, .DLL, .OCX, .DOCX, .BMP, .JPG/.JPEG, .PDF, .ZIP)
- While you can make basic edits in the file containing matches (including having NB replace text as indicated on the Cross-file Find/Replace Dialog Bar), most menu and toolbar options are disabled until you either Open or Close the file currently being displayed
- When you open or close the currently displayed file, you can continue the search without starting from the beginning – NB starts from the file selected in the list box that shows the names of all files that match the folder and file type (by default it will be on the last file displayed, but you can select any filre from that list as a starting point)
- A variety of changes have been made to the Annotation Dialog Bar:
- Going to next and previous annotations has been improved
- The Edit and Delete options now work
- Clicking or double clicking on an existing label in the list will no longer go to the label unless you explicitly click the button to go to the selected label
- The list is now updated properly when you switch files
Since other changes are still in progress, these will be documented when all the issues are addressed (in the next beta)
- Changes have been made to Character Properties (on the Format menu, and on font toolbar):
- The secondary and tertiary super- and subscripts (for example, superscript to superscript, and then superscript to that), which have never worked (and their non-working apparently never noticed) have been removed
- Application of these properties are now properly restricted to a single character (they have never been designed to affect a selected block)
- The error message that some encountered when a block was selected, and the drop-down menu was displayed, but no action selected, has been corrected
- NOTE: The Small Caps character properties option acts differently from the small caps options on the Edit, Case menu, and the latter is the recommended form, both because it can apply to more than a single character, and because it has additional capabilities (both small caps, and caps and small caps)
- The problem of mode commands proliferating in some cases when Windows-style print styles/modes (Tools, Preferences, Print Styles/Modes) has been resolved
- Some changes have been made re page breaks and other related settings:
- The Page Even/Odd commands now work again
- You should now be able to issue a PG command (and its variants) from the Action Line
- Inserting of changed spacing commands from the Format, Page Layout dialog should now work
- To make it easier for new users to become aware of the options, new menu items have been added on the Insert menu:
- Begin/End block indents
- Insert page break (basic)
- The original Breaks option has been renamed to Other Breaks
- InfoTips and ActionTips should now disappear better automatically (although in some cases two keystrokes, rather than one, might be required)
- An apparently long-standing problem with certain Style Manual Formats (apparently locking up) has been identified as only affecting those using the System skin (View, Visual Appearance), and has been fixed
- Selecting with F2, ..., F2 should now work even if the Lingua option to adjust the keyboard/language to the language of the text where the cursor is positioned has been selected
- The options to cancel a note (or header/footer) window, etc., without saving changes, or to close it and delete that element should now work
- Spurious entries (generated during program functions, such as inserting new style-manual formats) should no longer be added to the Extended Clipboard
- The toolbar options for inserting numbers and bullets have been hooked up
- The right click option to Cite Page Numbers has been implemented
- The display of horizontal positioning on the Status Line when centimeters are selected has been fixed (value used to be in inches)
- Obsolete keyboard shortcuts have been removed, and replaced by their new assignments (for example, Insert Bibliographic Reference is now F7, rather than Ctrl+Shift+F11; the index and table of contents marking dialogs have also been moved to the Dialog Bar, thus simplifying their shortcuts)
- The right click menu now includes an Auto Spell On/Off option (and its status is shown by a checkbox, as is the same option on the Proof menu)
- The Spell dialog should now stay on top of NB (rather than disappearing behind it if you happen to click back in the file or in another application)
- Some Archiva library settings fixed
- The Slovenian D/d (bar) is now supported in Lingua
- Changes have been made to improve how the program is configured in a new install:
- The full path and filename appear on the tab workspace
- The active tab now shown with a box drawn around the filename
- The startup now uses the original NB startup by default, rather than either of the two new ones (View, Visual Appearance, Startup Options), although this is not yet a final decision
- The file toolbar (with the edit toolbar) is the leftmost toolbar; the format bar is now to its right
- Lingua is active the first time the program is run, rather than the second (if you are running Lingua)
- An updated (but not final) version of NB Help is included
