Working with Multiple Files

With Nota Bene, up to 36 files can be open at the same time. Each file is opened in a different window. Nota Bene provides the standard methods used by most Windows programs to manage multiple files (or multiple windows) that are open at the same time. These controls are described below. In addition, Nota Bene provides, as an option, the traditional NB windows management system which allows fast access to multiple open files. For more information, see Window Options for Multiple Files.

Nota Bene's log and resume feature allows you to open a group of files, all at the same time. You can either open all of the files that were open when you last closed Nota Bene, or you can define one or more groups of files that you can open together as a group. For more information, see Log and Resume.

Several files can be combined into one manuscript file. This allows you to work on the smaller individual files (e.g., chapters of a book) for general editing, while combining all of the files in one file for functions such as numbering (pages, chapters, footnotes), cross references or creating an index. See Manuscript Files.

The following functions work the same way in virtually any Windows program:

To change the display of open files: Click Window, and then select the arrangement you want from the first 5 options listed. If more than one file is visible on screen, you can move from one file to another by clicking anywhere in the Window of any of the visible files. The color of the bar at the top of the Window indicates which Window is active.

To move to a file that is open, but not visible on the screen: Tabs for each open file are shown at the top of the screen. To display an open file, click on the tab for that file. You can also move to a different open file by pressing Ctrl+F6 to cycle between all open windows. Use Ctrl+Shift+F6 to cycle backwards or Alt+F10 to toggle between two screens. Nota Bene also provides a convenient Document Dialog Bar that can be used to move to a file that is open or to open a new file. See Document Dialog Bar.

To move from Nota Bene to another open program:  Hold down the Alt key while you press the Tab key once or more until the program you wish to select is indicated on the screen. You can also use the mouse to click on the button on the task bar to the right of the Windows Start button for the program you wish to select.

For more information, see Windows Help. Click Start, Help, select the Index tab and search for "Window."
