Keyboard Math

Nota Bene will allow you to add, subtract, multiply or divide within your document. Use the keys at the top of your keyboard for the following functions, without using the Shift key. In other words, the key combination Alt+#.is the same as Alt+3, not the same as Alt+Shift+3. If you forget these key combinations, you can use Tools, Math Operations on the menu. Menu instructions are shown in parentheses below. However, using the menus for mathematical functions is not an efficient process. The keyboard shortcuts (below) or the action line are recommended. For action line instructions, see Action Line Math.

Note that the Find/Replace dialog must be closed to use the keyboard shortcuts described below. The Alt+@ and Alt+# options that otherwise work as described below conflict with the Alt+2 and Alt+3 shortcuts used in Find/Replace. If the Find/Replace dialog is open, you can either close it or use the menu options (Tools, Math Operations...) to clear and dump the totals.

To perform any mathematical operation(s) on two or more numbers in your text:

1Press Alt+@ to clear any previous calculation (or click Tools, Math Operations, Clear Total).
2Place the cursor on (or just before) the first number of your operation.
3Press Alt and the appropriate key for the mathematical operation: addition:+, subtraction:-, multiplication:*, division: / (or click Tools, Math Operations, and then Add, Subtract, Multiply or Divide). The number will appear on the status line.
4Place the cursor on (or just before) the second number of your operation.
5Press Alt and the appropriate key for the mathematical operation: addition:+, subtraction:-, multiplication:*, division: / (or click Tools, Math Operations, and then Add, Subtract, Multiply or Divide). The result will appear on the status line.
6Repeat steps 4 and 5 for as many numbers as you want to include in your calculation.

To insert the result of a mathematical operation into your document:

1Move the cursor to the place in the document where you want the result to be inserted.
2Press Alt+# (or click Tools, Math Operations, Insert Total).

If you have a column of numbers as part of a tabular table, you can define the column and add all the numbers.  To add a column of numbers:

1Press Alt+@ to clear any previous calculation (click Tools, Math Operations, Clear Total).
2Define the column of numbers you want to add. See Define column of numbers.
3Press Alt+the plus sign, using the =/+ sign at the top of your keyboard (or click Tools, Math Operations, Add). The sum will appear on the status line.
