Backup Database (copy database files)

Your database can be backed up by using Windows File Explorer (or Finder for Mac users) to copy database files to a backup location.

The following files should be backed up:

Database files: An Ibidem database consists of 20 or more files, all with the same name but different extensions, and all in the same folder. The files with extensions .#00, .#01, .#02 etc. are the most important files in that they contain the data. The location of the database files, and a list of all of the database files by opening the database in Ibidem and going to the Control Nexus (traffic light button).

Linked note-taking files: If your bibliographic database includes record links to note-taking files (and if you accepted the default location for these note-taking files), then your note-taking files are saved in a subfolder of the folder that contains the database. The name of the subfolder is the filename that all of the database files share, followed by a number (usually 1). Your note-taking files may be in a different location if you chose a different location for them. In either case, a list of the folders and the note-taking files that they contain is available by opening the database in Ibidem and going to the Control Nexus (traffic light button).

To confirm the location of the database files and the note-taking files, open the database and go to the Control Nexus (click File, Control Nexus or click the Control Nexus button -- a traffic light). Confirm the location of the database folder. Information about the database folder (the location), the names of the files, and the location of note-taking files is available in the Control Nexus. Normally the note-taking files will be in a subfolder of the main database folder. Assuming that is the case, all you need to do is make sure that your database folder is being backed up.

If you are using a backup service, make sure that your service is backing up all of the files, and/or the whole folder, including all of its subfolders and all of its files. For more information, see Restore Database.

Ibidem database files can be compressed into a .zip file and sent to a different computer via e-mail.

An alternative way of backing up your database is to use the Backup Database option on the File menu to create an .NBB file. See .NBB backup file.
